Chris Doleman had 11 sacks in 1987, the rest of the D-line put together about 10 sacks including Millard with 3.

The Vikings had already beaten Elway that year and had just beaten Montana/Young in the playoffs. Throughout the course of their careers Wilson proved to be a better QB than Williams was, and Williams won the Super Bowl. A great QB is important it's not everything.
Vikings replacement players lost games to the Bucs, Packers and Bears. |

Doug Williams was a rookie QB with the late '70's expansion Buccaneers. That team peaked in '79 with the NFC championship game loss to the LA Rams, who in turn, lost the SB to Bradshaw's Steelers. Another mysterious SB with odd moments.
Williams and the Bucs then went through a hellish set of tragedies that knocked the team off course. Williams joined Steve Young in the USFL. Then the Redskins. Only Young landed with the loser Bucs.
The replacements only played the first three NFL games. The Vikings regulars lost the others, in the central division, to the Bears and Packers.
A good, not near-great team. The Browns had better balance on offense and a great secondary. With Wilson's tendency to throw INT's, the Browns would have won.

It was only 3 games, but it wasn't the first 3. The Vikings replacements played the Bucs, Bears and Packers.

In '79 the Bucs were good, but Williams was not. He had a 52 rating and a 41% completion percentage. The only season Williams ever had over an 80 rating was in '87 and he only started 2 games that year. Wade Wilson was a Pro Bowl QB in 88 and led the league in passer rating. |
