I think it would be a huge mistake for him to say otherwise.

If i were in Caldwell's situation, i'd take the potential 'free pass' on giving Gabbert one last year to do something. Unless i was absolutely completely and totally sold on a QB in this draft...
Basically...i think Caldwell's situation affords him a bit of leeway in that he's not the guy who selected Gabbert. If he still doesn't pan out...it's not really his fault. And if i were a brand new GM in that situation, i'd much rather take the 'gimme year' with Gabbert hoping something sparks...rather than tie myself and my career as a GM to a guy i'm not completely sold on at QB. Fair or not, GMs tend to be viewed heavily in the light of their high QB selections. |
How salty would Eugene Smith, Mike Mularkey, Jack Del Rio, Eugene Smith, and co. be if Blaine Gabbert wins us a few Superb Owls? Or even just one? |
Let's not be greedy. Winning one championship is an amazing feeling. I would seriously be fine with winning a Super Bowl and then going 0-16 for every other season. The feeling of winning that one championship and the following year is that good for me. |
1 championship for a lifetime of winless seasons? _________________

In my opinion, yes. The feeling is that good, at least for me. Just my perspective, others will disagree. The rest of your lifetime is not going to be filled with only winless seasons. There's only been one in the NFL anyway. _________________

He has said he won't rule out QB at #2, but everything he has said leads me to believe we will not select a QB there. _________________

I got the same feeling listening to him on the radio yesterday. Talked about Gabbert still being one of the youngest qbs in the league. He would be a top pick if he came out this year. Likes his tools. Said he stood tall in the pocket and stepped up in the pocket.
I went back and watched some and the issue I kept seeing was Gabbert either misreading the field or not having the balls to throw downfield. Mularkey and Co. may have jammed into his head no turnovers so he was ultra conservative.
Will be interesting to see how he looks in this offense. I honestly can't see another qb in this draft (except Geno) or free agency that will beat Gabbert out in camp. He looked very very good last year in camp. _________________

I want to see this offense with a real QB.
We have 2 good WRs, a good TE, and a strong RB _________________

IF I had to guess our starting offense next year...
QB: Blaine Gabbert
RB: Maurice Jones-Drew
FB: Montell Owens
WR: Cecil Shorts III
WR: Justin B14ckmon
TE: Marcedes Lewis
LT: Eugene Monroe
LG: Will Rackley
C: Mikey Brewster
RG: Uche Nwaneri
RT: Free Agent _________________

Could be worse I guess, but I'd like to see a draft pick somewhere in there too, maybe on the interior _________________

I could see us spending a selection on the interior line, but I don't find it to be as much of a necessity as others do. _________________

Would all be dependent on the talent at RT we get in FA, and how each of the interiors come back from injury...Rackley should come out and murder, getting stronger, and more technically advanced, over the last year and a half. Uche should no longer be hampered, and Brewster, will get stronger, and go back to his original position.
edit - Wouldn't also be shocked to see a Running Back selected early. _________________

I'd agree with this. Hopefully we add some depth to the interior in the draft (Justin Pugh in the 3rd please). _________________

I think so as well although guard/center and RT could be draft picks. I also would't be surprised is a guard is drafted and Rackley moves to center. _________________
