The only way we take him is if we lose redding, then it would make sense.

Here is the Link to the Mortensen article...

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070106/SPORTS01/701060377/1049/SPORTS05

Quote:
ESPN's Chris Mortensen told WXYT-AM (1270) on Friday that he believes if the Oakland Raiders take LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first pick, the Lions would probably take Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn or Michigan defensive tackle Alan Branch.

Of course, Russell and Branch are juniors and have not declared for the draft yet. The Russell-to-the-Raiders rumor picked up steam after his sensational Sugar Bowl in which he outplayed Quinn on national television.

"He's a freak," Mortensen said of Russell. "He's 260. If he's 280, are you comfortable with that?"

Mortensen was adamant that Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas was not a top-two pick. He added that the top five or 10 prospects are so strong that the Lions could entertain respectable offers to trade down.

drafting WRs 3 years in a row didnt make much sense...but that happened.
The bottom line is our position areas of need would mean reaching for a certain guy ie. Laron Landry.

I think they will do exactly what they did with Ernie Sims, scout a player who is aggressive, teachable, and has an athletic foundation that can be coached. Its not that the lions havent had the potential or talent, they have lacked the intensity and some of it has been so lost even this coaching staff cant revive it.

To me Branch would make perfect sense, not necessarily in relation to the depth but talent and playmaking abililty. Plus i dont think any lion fan doesn't drool at the fact of Rogers and Branch in the middle.

If we are going to reach for a player i'd rather it not be at the best position we have. Reach for Landry, Nelson, or Willis but not Branch. The only knock on landry and nelson is that they play overly aggressive.

I actually think Branch would be one of the best picks for you guys. Ask any Minnesota fan what they think of Pat Williams and Kevin Williams in the middle. Having 2 incredible DT's not only shuts down the run, but (if you have talent and speed at the DE/LB position) it also keeps linemen from getting to your LB's allowing them to roam freely to make plays in space. It also allows them to use their speed and athleticism to get to the QB which makes your secondary better. Shaun Rogers and Branch together would make Chester Taylor, Thomas Jones, Cedric Benson, and whoever ends up at RB for the Packers obsolete. That's huge in the NFC North. If you can get a DE that can get to the QB and a Safety that is excellent in Coverage and Run Support, then you're defense will be much better. It's my opinion that having 2 top notch DT's is ESSENTIAL to building a top defense. That said, Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, and Gaines Adams all make great sense.

P.S. Minnesota's problem was that our DE's couldn't get pressure on the QB and Fred Smoot is a colossal bust. Give any QB 5 seconds to throw a ball, and even the best secondary will be crap.

I also think that Redding will likely go to greener pastures (and by "green" I mean money). Cody would be a excellent 3rd DT and could possibly move to DE.

I have no idea why the Lions are playing Shaun Cody at DT.

He played DE most of his career at USC.

Some players change positions when they come to the pros.

Redding won't get the franchise tag...that would be incredibly over paying for the guy.

Branch would be nice, but at two... its a reach for a position that we are very strong at.

That is if we keep redding.

I can see Redding leaving, somebody will overpay for him.

Because Redding and Cody aren't very good. I don't think it is the biggest position of need, but I do think Branch would help. It would be awfully hard to run against Branch and Rogers.

Redding isn't very good? Can you explain that please?
