Who would you have picked? |
I liked Bennett, Olomu, and McBride at that spot. Now that we have Diggs, passing over Olomu is fine, but I thought Bennett would have been a good pick. Maybe I missed it, but is there some sort of issue with him? If there isn't, I don't see why you pass over a guy that could contribute rotationally as a pass rusher for a fullback.
Not sure what's up with McBride either |
According to some teams, they thought Bennett was undersized and wasn't sure of his position in the NFL. I also heard some rumblings of a possible injury on twitter, although I don't know how accurate that is. But he dropped like a high-fiber turd. |

Love this pick. Burton was a good player at Rutgers and is a great athlete that should be one of our better ST players
also fits the high character mold, high work ethic, was a captain at Rutgers and sounds like a growing leader
I was going to include him in my last mock as a UDFA after taking Jalston Fowler in the mid rounds, but had a list of like 40 UDFA's so I just didn't include that part _________________

For Bennett, apparently teams were questioning his size and whether he would be able to translate to the NFL level. Basically a "Good college player but..." syndrome.
As for McBride, the reasoning that I heard was that he's got a bit of diva to him. That and competition are the only two knocks against him. |

You guys got a hell of a player. He will give everything everyday even in practice and will be a special team captain in his time there, I guarantee it. _________________

Detroit Lions FB Michael Burton packs on the pounds prior to rookie season
Quote: | ALLEN PARK -- At Rutgers, Michael Burton's playing weight was a little more than 230 pounds. That's good enough to be an effective fullback at the collegiate level, but he knew he needed to bulk up in order to make it to the NFL.
By the time the scouting combine rolled around in February, the 5-foot-11 Burton was up to 242 pounds. When he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round (No. 168 overall) last Saturday, he was tipping the scales 250.
|
Quote: | At 250 pounds, his frame is now more in line with the top players at his position. According to Pro Football Focus, the top-ranked blocking fullbacks in 2014 weighed between 242 and 260. |
Quote: | Burton found himself on the Lions' radar in December, when Rutgers came to Detroit to play North Carolina in the inaugural Quick Lane Bowl. Lions general manager Martin Mayhew liked what he saw from the versatile fullback as the Scarlet Knights rushed for 340 yards in the 40-21 victory.
"Fullback is a dying position in college football, I think with all the spread offenses, but this guy is very talented, very athletic," Mayhew said. "He catches the ball really well out of the backfield, can locate guys in space and block in space, so we liked him a lot." |
Quote: | Where Burton lacked production was as a ball carrier. He was only asked to take a handoff 22 times during his college career. Still, the Lions were clearly comfortable with the skill set, especially since Ron Prince, the team's tight ends coach, served as Rutgers offensive coordinator in 2013.
"He was the offensive coordinator so he oversaw everything, whether it was blocking techniques or assignments, he was there," Burton said. "He has a lot of experience. He has great football knowledge, which he was able to spread to me." |
Quote: | In Burton, the Lions will also get a key contributor on special teams. This isn't the case of a college senior who is a couple years removed from contributing in the third phase, but a former walk-on who make his name covering and blocking punts and kickoffs and continued to do it until his final college game.
"I think so many times you take these guys who have been four-year starters at safety or linebacker and have not played on special teams," Mayhew said. "We bring them here and try to teach them how to do that. It's so much better to get a guy who at least did that for a period of time in his college career, who knows what you're talking about as far as how to cover a kick, how to cover a punt. We tried to get some guys who had some experience in that area." |
Quote: | Last season, fullback Jed Collins played 449 snaps for the Lions, including 203 on special teams. With Collins now in Dallas, Burton will be expected to step in and fill a similar role. |

Pretty good fullback.
After Cooter took over as OC we pretty much stopped using a FB so he hasn't seen much action in a while. _________________

How is he as a lead blocker? Highlights make it seem like he has decent mitts. _________________

How is he as a lead blocker? Highlights make it seem like he has decent mitts. | He's been one of the better fullbacks in the NFL in his time here. He can catch and can be decent on short runs. Though, if over-used in a predictable manner, his short yardage effectiveness can be terrible (see: how he was used here with Joe Lombardi).
As a blocker, he has been really good here. I'm a fan of your OL coach Jeremiah Washburn (I think he was the scapegoat here for things outside of his control), so he should be a fit for your offense. I'm not sure how much you guys will plan to use him, but if used properly he could be a solid contributor. He won't be as versatile as a John Kuhn and he won't go out there breaking off facemask's, but he's a solid lead blocker that gets to the hole in time, gets to the right spot on the defender the majority of the time, and does a solid job finishing his blocks.
If the Lions had any intentions of using a fullback he wouldn't have been cut. He's worth a roster spot for sure, he may even make some contributions on special teams for you guys as well. _________________

Thanks man, I'm of the impression that we plan to use him like Shanahan used his FB in Atlanta, run blocker that you can flex out to TE at times, and that you can utilize in the passing game for cheap chunks of yardage off play-action. I like that he's only 25. _________________
