Web,

I'm not convinced that posting portions of articles from other websites is necessarily an infringement of copyright laws. The following link tries to interpret the law for use in blogs such as Football's Future:

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/9264

My intent is not to offend, but rather to set the record straight. If the portion of the post that is directly copied from another website's article is documented with the author's name and website, where are the problems, legally speaking? I can't find any law specifically about copyrighting and the internet.

I believe the ultimate conclusion behind copyright infringement is to give credit where credit is due. For me, specifically, I believe I have been admonished quite unfairly for quoting an excerpt from an NFL rumor mill website, in which I gave the author's name, what company the author was writing on behalf, as well as put all of the author's words in quotes. This should satisfy, unless I'm terribly mistaken.

Please advise.

I guess our members are still confused by this to some extent. Regardless of how you interpret copyright law here is how I want everyone to proceed when referencing an article on the web.

1. The preferred method is to just link to the article.
2. Quoting from free public articles is allowed provided its not more then a sentence or two and a link is provided to the source.
3. No quoting or paraphrasing is allowed from articles that are part of any websites paid content.
4. Never copy and paste a complete article to the forums.

Its fine, but your sig is too big.

It must be 600x100 (maximum).

We have a troll in our forum. He's reproducing material he wrote (he says) from another article.

He's been shut down once but keeps coming back.

Should we PM our forum mod and wait?

Or should we PM a mod that is on at the time to "deal with it in a timely fashion."?

Thanx

I took care of it, If your Forum Mod isn't online then check the index page at the bottom, 'who is online' to see if Webby or a Global Mod is online

You should probably stay away from it. Knowing that obviously 99% of these have pictures on them and it is against the forum rules to show a picture of yourself...

I'm not positive, though.

No. You can't link to an off site personal website or blog.

That isn't a problem....no need to credit the site for using their pic unless there is some statement on their site saying that you can't reproduce their pics. I would venture to guess that 99.9% of the sig and avatar pics used on FF have at least one bit of picture that was taken from another source.

When it comes to the sigs and avatars you use you are more than welcome to find cool pictures and use photoshop or whatever to make a sig pic or avatar (within the size guidelines of the forum of course) and use it. There is a sig forum as well where you can ask someone else to make one for you.
