To be honest, he's at his best when he's shooting helicopter scenes at sunset. Those shots must take up a good 50% of his shooting schedule. _________________

One of the best war films ever made, Stanley Kubrick's view of the Vietnam War turns into a classic film made by one of the most original voices to ever pick up a camera. The story of a squad of Marines who go through training and then are sent off to Hue City where the Tet Offensive takes place, the film is told through the voice of one private. A great depiction of what soldiers go through in preparation for war, and on a more personal level it is one of my favorite films of all-time and Kubrick is one of my favorite directors as well.

Shaun of the Dead [2004, Edgard Wright]
"A smash hit romantic comedy...with zombies", the line off the front of the DVD case, and it tells the whole story. The story of a slacker who is down on his luck and can't straighten anything in his life out, he hates his job, his girlfriend dumps him, his roommates hate each other, and he often forgets about his "mum". Well, one day, the dead begin to walk the earth and Shaun and his best friend Ed go out to save Shaun's now ex-girlfriend and his mother before they are torn to shreds. Not only is Shaun of the Dead a hoot and a holler, but it also has a good amount of frights, and albeit they won't exactly make you jump out of your seat, the lack of scares is more than made up by the film's gut-busting laughs and, dare i say brilliant, satire. Shaun of the Dead has become a cult classic and easily one of my favorite zombie movies of all-time. Simon Pegg delivers a stellar performance and Nick Frost will keep you in stitches the entire ride.
The Verdict: B+ - 87%
Clerks [1994, Kevin Smith]
Kevin Smith's first directorial work takes us to the Quick Stop, where Dante Hicks works as a cashier and his best friend Randal Graves works, albeit not very well, at the video store next door. The film takes us to a day when Dante is called into work on his day off and is forced to work open to close and everything that could possibly go wrong does. The movie is made with the brilliant dialogue that often takes place between the characters, whether it be Dante and Randal, Dante and a customer, Randal and a customer, whoever, its all great. The film was shot for only $27,575 and is in black and white, which really adds to the feel and ambiance of the film. Plus we are treated to the creation of two great characters, Jay and Silent Bob (played by Kevin Smith himself). A cult classic and rightfully so.
The Verdict: B+ - 85% _________________

Slither [2006, James Gunn]
I bought this when Circuit City was going down in Green Bay and I saw it on the shelf for two bucks, I had previously seen trailers for it and thought it looked like it would be an ok horror flick, i bought it, while admittedly not knowing much about it. Turns out it was $2 well spent, a classic B-movie, this film is the story of a intergalactic puss-ball that moves from planet to planet consuming all life through way of a host body. What i thought was going to be a straight up gore/horror flick added many laughs to the tale as well (and there were still plenty of blood and guts i assure you). Gregg Henry and Nathan Fillion provide a majority of the laughs, but the film is still spooky enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, if you aren't already on the ground laughing.
The Verdict: B - 81%
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [1998, Terry Gilliam]
A visually compelling film that focuses more on making you feel like you are on an acid trip than developing its characters, Fear and Loathing is about a journalist who writes for Sports Illustrated and is sent to Vegas to cover a motor cross race, he inexplicable brings his attorney along for the ride, well more he insisted (the attorney) than anything, but the rest of the film is basically these two going on a helluva drug binge. Hotel rooms are destroyed, assignments missed, bills unpaid, toilet seats violated, this film has enough laughs to keep the motivated viewers' interest and the insane cinematography to keep just about everyone wondering "what's next?", it also has a bot of wit tossed in to try and make it seem deeper than it really is. Although i personally enjoy it, i know many others who don't, it definitely isn't for everyone.

Fear and Loathing is probably one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. I felt like I was on drugs just watching it. _________________

Yep, i bought it yesterday and watched it last night (3rd time seeing it) and thats exactly how i felt immediately afterwards, and i was indeed sober. It really is an acid trip on screen and gives you the illusion that you are on one as well. _________________

I honestly can't imagine watching it while impaired. I would be scared more than anything. _________________

My 20th review
Monty Python and the Holy Grail [1975, Terry Gilliam]
Where do I begin? Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a brilliant satire that borders complete ridiculousness, however, walks the thin line well, using brilliant social satire and a slew of hysterical songs that have made it the cult classic it is today, nearly 35 years later. It really is one of those movies you just have to see to fully understand its meaning and purpose. My friends had always tried to explain it to me, and i never really got it, they were always laughing about it and i was out of the loop, well, i've since watched it several times. Now i get it. It's so ridiculous its funny and its so funny its ridiculous , the Monty Python crew strikes gold with this film and they then create two more stellar pictures following this one. Oh, in case you haven't seen it and need a little background information, its a play on the Middle Ages and King Arthur.

in the hangover thread there was talk of comedy classics....well Monty Python really is one of them, just look at it, 34 years later and still going strong, none of the films from today will be able to say that three decades from now.

Evil Dead II [1987, Sam Raimi]
One of my favorite movies of all-time, Raimi perfectly mixes scares, gore, and laughs in the sequel to his 1979 smash hit The Evil Dead. Evil Dead II utilizes phenomenal slapstick comedy and has revamped special effects that make it a smash hit. Ash is probably one of my favorite film characters of all-time as well, Bruce Campbell does a great job acting in this trilogy. For those that haven't seen the film, its the story of a man who takes his girlfriend out to a cabin in the woods for a little romantic getaway, but an ancient evil is unleashed in the forest and soon turns this romantic evening into a night of living hell for Ash and a research team who came to the cabin to research the book of the dead, which is in the cabin. Evil Dead II is a gut-busting great time and also one of the most influential "horror" films of all-time, and like i previously said, one of my personal favorites, its..."groovy".
