What is your source here? He hasent been the same player since 2001, and we spent a 7th round pick on him. you think we whould start an injury prone guy worth a 7th over a younger third year 2nd round pick? I doubt it

Tice said he was going to start. I read it in one of the Minny papers.

He said Cowart would start in the middle and EJ would back up and play special teams.

He was injured and when he came back, Vilma was the starter.

He's a good player.

Wow... That sucks for Henderson. I guess you could call him a bust now. They should have taken Barnett...

I don't think they're given up on EJ. He will learn from Cowart.

err yeah your sig's fallen behind

Darius trades off
we got Sharper
Burress signed with the Giants

and Tice announced Cowart's the starter at MLB.
Henderson's not a bust (yet), he just needs to learn instead of freeroam and with Cowart there, that's what he'll do.
Cowart had his best season in 2003 and in 2004 he was injured the first half and a backup the second. Those numbers are bullcrap and he deserves to be the starter.

What I think a lot of people are forgetting (even thouse supporting Cowart starting) is the defensice coordinator and system. The brilliance of our new D is that we didn't just make random signings, we made ones that fit perfectly in Ted's system. Cowart has experience in it, Pat Williams has experience in it (and has never played in a D that wasn't based around the same kind of system). Winfield last year had experience in it.
Sharper doesn't, and Smoot doesn't, but I believe the two will mold into it fine.

Defense, like offense, also needs to adjust to system. Around when we signed Sharper I thought our defense was gonna be around 15th for the first half of the year because it was just a random mismatching of good players and positions. With Cowart, we get to keep an OLB at OLB, we get some more veteran leadership, we get experience in our system, we get to keep an OLB with MLB experience at OLB, and it just seems perfect on all fronts to me now.

I am not so sure, I mean if its only for a year, fine, that will help EJ. But if its long term, it will hurt him.

I do think Cowart should have to earn it and I think he will.

from tice:

"What excites me about this trade, in spending time with Sam Cowart, is he's got veteran awareness," Tice said. "It gives us another veteran leader, and he walks in as our starting middle linebacker."

Asked about the future of last year's middle linebacker, E.J. Henderson, Tice said, "He's got to learn from Sam, No. 1. Then, No. 2, he needs to dedicate himself to being the best player he can be."
