Hi guys,
since I am from Germany I cant really see many cards games (caught just the seattle game last year, they were killed by Alexander Sad ), so I was wondering what happened to the o-line last season.
I remember reading an article about how their line should be as good as the one Warner had in St Louis, but this was clearly not the case.
However L.Davis was the 2nd overall pick and Ross was a starter in one of the best lines in football. Plus Stephanovic and Wells were considered as two of the better young lineman in the league by some guy on nfl.com last year. And all I heard after the draft was what a steal elton brown is in the 4th. So who was the disappointment? Or was it the injuries? I heard they had one of the worst lines in the last decade so there has to be a talent problem.

Also, Im gonna use this post to ask some trivia questions, i hope im not to big of an ignorant: What is the difference between a guard and a tackle? I know where they line up but why are tackles getting so much more money? What difference does it make if you play left or right tackle or guard? And why cant any lineman play center? Is it that hard to snap the ball?

Thank you for helping a newbie

i can tell you that it was mainly injuries that decimated our line in 05....at one stage we had our 4th string centre starting....we have a very talented o-line that should perform well this year....the only real weakness and sore spot are C depth and possibly a RT

with the question about the line...

C is a very specialised postiton...for many teams it is the Centre that reads the defensive front 7 and tells his fellow lineman who or where to block....the centre and guard postion are usually more of a run blocking guys....they are biggger than tackles...becasue they have to man up against the DT's...on the other hand the tackles usually have quick feet and good explosion off the line of scrimmage to be able to deal with the speed edge rushers.....i hope this helps...

there will be better definitions out there tho

Germany huh? Wow, seems this board gets more international everyday(no pun intended Khodder!)

To answer your questions, 2 main things factored into the o-line troubles:

1. Injuries- You named such guys as Oliver Ross, Reggie Wells, Alex Step and Elton Brown as good players. All 4 missed at least 5 games last year(Wells and Step finished the year on injured reserve)
2. Coaching- Last year's o-line coach Everett Lindsey was easily one of the worst in the league and it showed. Very poor technique run blocking wise and a lack of determination. New o-line coach Steve Loney was up for offensive coordinator duties from numerous teams, he's that good. He'll make a tremendous impact on a relatively young group(Wells, Step and Brown are all under 26).

We'll definitely upgrade this group Saturday but it's certainly wasn't as bad as people make it sound.

As far as tackles and guards salaries are concerned, tackles are the cream of the crop. Their job is to protect the QB more so than guards because their facing pass rushing DE's. LT's make a lot of cash for protecting the blind side of a QB. Usually, elite college tackles that fail at the position in the pros and banished to guard so to speak.

As for center, if you can find a good one don't let him go, that's all I have to say.
