I know, doesn't make sense except that Kelly is another "Marinelli guy". But, Kelly is 32 and has played 13 games combined the past two seasons. Doesn't seem like an upgrade, more of a lateral move that could be a downgrade by the end of the season. |
Kelly shouldn't be expected to be anything more than a nickel corner here. Releasing Bryant was mostly a business move--he's due $4 million this season and has petitioned the team to release him. I guess a quietly malcontent corner isn't worth $4 million these days.
It's a downgrade though, and Bryant was the team's only capable CB last year. As of right now, the team has none of its top-four CBs from last year under contract. Keith Smith and Travis Fisher look like they will likely be re-signed.
The latest news is that (surprise, surprise) Shaun Rogers looks to be headed to Denver. As of yesterday I had read that six teams were in the running for Rogers and that the highest offer had been a fourth-round pick. Some are speculating Denver's final offer might be as high as their second-round pick straight-up for Rogers, but that seems optimistic to me. At the very least, I feel Detroit would probably have to throw in another pick (perhaps their fourth) in that situation. Alternatively, the might might be Denver's third instead of their second. But I don't think the Lions would pull the trigger on a deal that only netted them a fourth-round pick. He might be lazy, but he's clearly a bigger difference-maker than an average fourth-round pick would be.

I don't see how that move would make sense. Julius Jones looks like a downgrade from Kevin Jones to me, as he was only able to muster a pitiful 3.6 yards per carry behind a Dallas line that was stocked with Pro Bowlers. KJ might be injured more, but he's been more productive when he's on the field. I would be surprised to see Julius Jones get a contract with Detroit. There's some speculation that they might even look at Rashard Mendenhall or Jonathan Stewart in the draft--if either one falls to the fifteenth pick after their combine showings. _________________

It cannot be their third, Denver's third round pick is currently owned by the Vikings. _________________

Yeah, I realized that after I posted that.
Hmm. I would be really disappointed if it were only their fourth.
Evidently the "Rogers-to-Denver" rumors were premature. No deal is imminent and they're still listening to offers. Hopefully Detroit can get good value out of Rogers, and a lot of us are hoping they could get Jonathan Vilma in exchange. _________________

Yeah plus he has ties with Marinelli and Barry.
Not sure he'll start unless we plan on moving Alexander to CB. _________________

I just thought of this:
Dwight Smith vs. Troy Williamson next year (Lions vs. Jaguars)
I can see it now, theres 5 seconds left in the clock, and the Jags are down by 4. They need a TD. The Lions know that they absolutely MUST stop this ball, so they put Dwight back in deep coverage. Okay, Garrard takes the snap, looks over at Reggie Williams...covered, Matt Jones...covered, and then he sees Troy Williamson who just got off of Dwight Smith, and then Garrard says "Oh damn". He throws the ball to troy, and then he does what he does best....DROPS THE FOOTBALL.
Alternate Ending:
The ball is being thrown to Troy, who got off of Dwight Smith, and then a miracle happens. As if God came down and spread peace all over the world...Troy Williamson catches the ball and the Jaguars fans go NUTS!

Although the Vikings never lined him up there, I believe he can play CB too. Detroit runs a cover 2 defense, correct? _________________

The Detroit Lions traded DT Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals.
There are two reports as to the compensation. ESPN says it's for a third and a fifth round pick, the Cincinnati Enquirer says it's for a third or a fourth. _________________
