Ugh. Just read we picked up Peralta's and Dotel's options.

I never understood why everyone dislikes Peralta.

The ugh was for Leyland returning. I'm fine with bringing back both of these guys though I would prefer a shortstop with more range. With Profar ready, I was kind of hoping we'd go after Andrus.

I like all three moves. What better options did we have?

Here's what I would like to see.

*Let Delmon Young and Jose Valverde walk. Victor Martinez replaces Delmon Young at DH (huge upgrade). What I would like to see for closer is them hand it to Alburquerque or sign a veteran.

*Do something about RF. Boesch better be not be back next season, berry isn't even close to starter material and I'm not sure if Garcia is ready quite yet. Now, DD does have a knack of making big trades. Justin Upton anyone? I'd give up Castellanos, Smyly/Porcello + for him. Might not be enough but can't hurt to call. OF options are kind of slim in FA. Maybe we go after someone like Melky Cabrera? Torii Hunter?

*Bring back Anibal Sanchez. I'd give him a 4-5 year deal at about 12 million per. If we can't bring him back, I like Hiroki Kuroda or Dan Haren. Dempster is a possibility as well.

Overall, team should be improved next season but it will be awfully difficult to get back to the WS. Sad

Oh, and stay the heck away from Josh Hamilton please.

Agreed on the first point. Al is my personal favorite for the closer role next year, although I doubt he gets it because he saw very limited action in the playoffs, leading me to think Leyland doesn't think that highly of him. It's probably Coke's to lose (and I have no doubts he'll lose it eventually if he gets it).

I'm fine mixing Berry, Garcia, and Dirks for our two corner outfield spots next year. Kelly and Boesch should see very limited action... both should not be on the team. If they feel like Nick C is ready, I'm all for him coming up, but I don't want him to cut into Garcia's playing time as I think he's the real deal.

Sanchez is going to get overpaid. He made some money at the end of the season with his last month or so plus the playoffs. I don't think he'll be back, and I don't think he'll be worth what he gets. He's not as good as he was at the end of the year. I'd welcome him back, but he's nothing more than our fourth best pitcher, and I don't want to overpay for him. We need to make sure we have the money we need to tie up Verlander, Scherzer, and Fister long term (not sure when any of their contracts are up). Kuroda I like a lot - if he's available relatively cheap, I'd take him.

And yes - no to Hamilton. BIG no.

Dombrowski said we are not pursuing Valverde or Young. He wants Sanchez back

Awesome. Also saw that they like Bruce Rondon a lot and he has a real shot at being our closer.

Biggest area of concern is corner outfield according to Dombrowski too.

Going to be expensive to get Sanchez back and if they do they will almost certainly have to part ways via trade with Porcello. Trading Porcello is probably a good idea anyway since the groundball defense behind him is disgusting and he gave up a mlb leading 226 hits last season.

I am for picking up the options of Peralta and Dotel. There aren't any other shortstops out there to get. Maybe a trade for JJ Hardy could make sense if they were also going to trade Jhonny so he can be third base for some other team.

Dotel was great against righties last year (.197) and his salary is palatable.

The team still needs a closer and there are some options available like Grant Balfour, Joakim Soria if the shoulder is good, and Jonathon Broxton. Or they could go internally.

As far as corner outfielders Berry is not much more than a bench player. He struggled mightily in the second half. Boesch was tendered a contract which I find strange. Garcia is still young and it is too early to determine if he will be on the opening day roster. Melky Cabrera could be an option. Also, maybe a one year deal for Torii Hunter. A lot of mystery surrounding this opening.

What are the alternatives? Do you think another manager would have led them to the world series?

The players love and respect Leyland even if the fans do not.

I love no-neck Dirks!

If somehow we could trade Rondon with others for Andrus, I'd do it.

Not only do I think another manager would have I think the division would have been wrapped up early. I also think another manager would not have taken Oak to 5.

Leyland is stubborn. He sticks with his guys no matter what.

We'd have to give up Castellanos, Smyly + but it seems like they're are fine with Peralta at short.

Avila
Fielder
Infante
Cabrera
Peralta
Berry (same playing time as this year, maybe a bit less)/Dirks (at least 110 games)
Jackson
Dirks/Garcia (at least 110 games)
Martinez

Verlander
Fister
Scherzer
???
Smyly/Porcello

This is how we're looking right now going into next season... the COF playing time is just what I'd like to see, basically mostly Garcia/Dirks with some Berry thrown in. I do expect Dirks to regress from his production this season, but he's still a pretty solid player. Garcia has potential to be a stud. Berry is a good backup.

We need a fourth starter. I don't think Sanchez will come back. I don't hate Porcello like a lot of people here, but I agree he's a bad fit with our pitiful range in the infield. I'm not sold that Smyly can really be better than Porcello, but I'm open to giving him a shot. I don't want both in the roatation, which makes a starting pitcher a huge need to fill in the offseason.

I'd also like to add another outfielder. It'd reduce Dirks and Garcia's playing time, but if we can get someone who is an improvement (I'm not sure who is out there - but I don't want Hamilton or Swisher), I'm open to it.

I expect a similar season next year, to be honest... disappointing regular season. But if we can sneak into the playoffs, we have the talent to beat anyone.
