A club official said the team already has reached agreement in principle on a contract for McCants, but that he had a pass a physical exam and that there were a few other elements that had to be addressed. Additionally, coaches did not want to release a player currently on the Philadelphia roster, since McCants would not be up to speed enough to participate in Thursday's preseason game.

McCants, 27, was released by the Washington Redskins earlier this week. He is a player the Eagles staff likes, and has enjoyed some success against the Philadelphia defense, with 11 catches for 149 yards and one touchdown in four appearances. A fifth-round pick of the Redskins in the 2001 draft, McCants fell out of favor with the current Washington staff, but the Eagles feel he can provide a solid No. 4 presence.

The former Delaware State standout has intriguing size (6-feet-3, 215 pounds), presents a big target, and might in time develop into a contributor in the Eagles offense. McCants has appeared in 29 games, with three starts, and has 53 receptions for 687 yards and 8 touchdowns. Beyond Terrell Owens, the young wide receivers on the Eagles roster have a combined 27 catches.

He adds some much needed depth at WR, and we're probably not going to blow a bunch of money on him. Good pickup.

McMullen will stay. Carlos Perez won't. They'll keep 5 WRs: T.O., Lewis, Brown, McMullen, McCants.

I find it interesting that all of the WRs they are bringing in since the start of camp are bigger receivers (McCants, Chris Samp, Michael Gasperson), all in the 6'3" - 6'4" 210-220 range.

The Eagles have never really seemed to make big wide receivers a priority (Freddie, Reggie Brown, Thrash, etc), so I do find it a bit interesting. Maybe that's just how it worked out, though, and there isn't really a correlation.

Great pickup for the Eagles. Obviously the depth is needed and with McCant as the 4th WR and McMullen at 5, they are in plenty good shape. Also, Ive always thought McCants is an excellent receiver and I think sooner or later he will make some significant contributions. He will make an excellent no. 4 and hopefully will take some strides this year in a good offense.

True. He's also another big red zone target for McNabb, He and Owens, with Reggie at #3, would make a phenomenal red zone package. They have the height and leaping ability to beat most any secondary.

Yeah... which hopefully will help make up for the lack of a goal-line back we have right now... sending out Owens, McCants, Brown, LJ, and Westy, with a McNabb scramble as a 6th option, makes a Red Zone West Coast passing offense that seams almost impossible to defend.

Whoa, that's a great point.
