Bring back the Whalers!

I agree that contraction would probably be the best for the NHL, however, not necessarily due to lack of talent, but moreso that it makes it a better league, especially having it in markets where it's more likely to have success.

Just for my pure speculation, here would be my new NHL after contraction:

Eastern Conference:

Atlantic: New Jersey, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Northeast: Boston, Buffalo, Hartford (relocated Islanders or Hurricanes), Washington
Canada East: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg

Western Conference:

Central: Minnesota, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit
Western: LA Kings, Dallas, San Jose, Colorado
Northwest/Canada West: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kansas City/Seattle (relocated Coyotes)

Contracted: Florida, Tampa Bay, Columbus, Nashville, Anaheim, NY Islanders/Carolina Hurricanes

The only alternative, if it were to stay at 30, would be to move some of them to better markets. My suggestion would be then to do the following (all pure speculation):

Keep: Nashville, Columbus, Anaheim, Tampa Bay
Move: Florida and Islanders/Hurricanes to one of Hamilton, Quebec, Milwaukee, or Houston (where hockey is surprisingly popular).

Huzzah, that is huge for them, totally turns things on their head in terms of the team.

And just like that, the state of Minnesota has a championship contending caliber team.

It does seem a little strange to see people talking about two American hockey players and a Canadian basketball player.

Confused
