Most unexpected kill off since Darmody of Boardwalk Empire.
That sucked. They had so many ways to go with Opie, wasted character development I think. _________________

Wow, got to give props to Sutter for having balls to off a major character. Never in a million years would I have thought that Opie would be the one, but I love the hatred raging in Jax's eyes. He is going to go off, and start killing left and right.
Tara is sounding just like Jemma, and even looks like her now. I loved the back and forth.
"Doctor, you going to kill me?"
"No, but my husband might."
The look on Jemma's face was priceless.
Pope is definitely the best bad guy that this show has had in its run, and probably is now my most hated tv character since Forrest Whitaker on The Shield. _________________

Just got caught up. I have a feeling that this season is going to be insane. Best show on TV, bar none. _________________

Quote: | As Sutter tells it, Opie's death, as "gut-wrenching" as it was, was necessary to shape Jax's character as he moves forward in making the gang his own, following the ouster of Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman).
"Jax needed that emotional upheaval, that one event in a man's life that can change the course of his destiny," Sutter (pictured at right) offered. "And I think the death of his best friend is an event." |
So Opie dying was about shaping Jax's character, this is going to make him more ruthless as club leader and hes going to want revenge. Opie was one of the few people that could really affect Jax with dying. _________________

Opie death really sucks, I really liked him, but I understand Sutter's POV. I forgot he left his kids with that porn star too.

Over Joffrey?
Pope did what he did for a reason. It's not exactly justified but he saw it as an eye for an eye. What he did was extremely horrible. But he had a reason. Joffrey is a coward and does terrible things for amusement. I don't hate Pope but I don't like him either. _________________

My favorite part of season five so far was when Jax told that guard that he was getting out and they'd find him and kill him. That look on Jax's face showed the evident change in his character. I'm going to love this season. _________________

You could tell the guard was terrified in his face. He knows Jax is going to come through with it.
Not only has Jax changed but so has Tara. This season seems like a big turning point in the series. Some serious stuff is going to go down in this season. I wouldn't doubt if someone else dies in the season finale or maybe earlier. _________________

Tara is turning into Gemma, IMO, but to a less venomous version. _________________

And smarter.
Its going to be interesting, they killed off Opie for a reason and that was to shape Jax going further. Can't wait to see how all of this plays out.
I have mix feelings about Pope, the guy was getting revenge for his daughter being killed. That revenge was extreme and it was something that can't be countered, watching your daughter burned alive in front of you...
The rest of what Pope did was for business, like what he told Jax at the end of the episode. "taking a unfortunate situation and finding the benefit, that is what turns players into kings". Something like that, but Pope saw this as a chance for a business move. But you know Jax is going to get revenge and things are going to get crazy. _________________

I loved how they brought in Ashley Tisdale to be the hooker girl from Indiana. I'm thinking that she was the snitch.. because if it ends up being Clay I hope that Nero offs him _________________

I'd rank Joffrey as more hate-able, but still wouldn't say he's my most hated character since Kavanaugh and I'm not even sure I "hated" Kavanaugh all that much (particularly towards his demise - he had some sweet one-liners, but not much to really make me detest him). Pope, like Kav to some degree, falls into the same category with characters like T-Bag from PB, Vern Schillinger in Oz (I think Chris Keller in that series is a much more hate-able character), and Tolliver on Deadwood where you "love to hate them," which kind of causes you to like them in a way.
Thus far Stahl is the least redeeming (and in my estimation most "hate-able") villain of the series. Was Ally Walker's performance as striking as Harold Perrineau's turn as Pope? Not always, it definitely tailed off towards the end of her run, but the character as a whole was more hate-worthy.
You want loathe-worthy characters you've got to go to people like Roz Shays on LA Law, Lori on Walking Dead, Joe McCoy on Friday Night Lights (I apparently sneered every time this guy came on screen), and Janice from The Sopranos. And of course I despise Horatio Cain, but that's just largely (OK... entirely) having to do with David Caruso and less with the actual character.
I'd even contend Pete Campbell on Mad Men is more hate-able than Pope on a character for character comparison. _________________
