Welcome to 1King's 2013 Top 10 Recruiting Classes and Overview thread. Some of you may remember my 2011 and 2012 editions, I wanted to wait until everyone had signed for the 2013 class so I didn't have to edit and change things like I did in the 2011 version. In addition to the top 10 classes I have also done top 5 classes per BCS-AQ conference, and top 5 positional classes. If you have any questions, concerns, clarifications, or any other thoughts please let me know.

Notes of Concern:

* If there are any ties in any rankings it is because I feel they are so close you can basically flip a coin to decide and have a solid argument for it.

* If I have categorized a player in the wrong position and/or wrong side of the ball they will likely play on, please let me know and I can make the necessary changes.

*Overall Classes #2-6 are all very close, as some have very strong classes top to bottom, whereas others have more elite talent at the top, but not nearly as much depth overall. I expect most debate/disgreements to be in this area.

#1| Alabama Crimson Tide

Best Overall Player: Derrick Henry (FL, RB/ATH)
Best Defensive Player: Reuben Foster (AL, LB)
Best Offensive Player: Derrick Henry (FL, RB/ATH)
Immediate Impact: OJ Howard (AL, TE)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Leon Brown (NY, OL)
Surprises: None

Thoughts: For the 2nd year in a row, Alabama is my #1 ranked recruiting class and this year, it isnt close. The defending champs added elite players on both sides of the ball and at nearly every position: RB, WR, TE, DL, LB and very good players at the other positions. Derrick Henry, OJ Howard, and Robert Foster are all elite level prospects with enormous potential for the Tide offense which already boasts elite level players from last year's class in TJ Yeldon and Amari Cooper. Defensively Reuben Foster, Jonathan Allen, and Dee Liner lead the way in the front 7. A'Shawn Robinson, a signing day flip from Texas, could play at a very high level on either the offensive or defensive line. A truly amazing class from top to bottom for Nick Saban and company.

#2| Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Best Overall Player: Jaylon Smith (IN, LB)
Best Defensive Player: Jaylon Smith (IN, LB)
Best Offensive Player: Greg Bryant (FL, RB)
Immediate Impact: Jaylon Smith (IN, LB)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Durham Smythe (TX, TE)
Surprises: Eddie Vanderdoes (Victory over UCLA, Alabama, USC)

Thoughts: The Irish capitalized off their season by closing very well on the trail with CA DL Eddie Vanderdoes being a signing day steal. Vanderdoes and Jaylon Smith are both elite defensive players that have very strong arguments as being the tops at their respective positions. ND edges the #2 spot due in large part to Smith and Vanderdoes. ND also added a couple of strong secondary players in CB Cole Luke and S Max Redfield. Offensively, ND landed one of the top OL classes in the nation, a pair of talented FL RB's in Greg Bryant and Tarean Folston, and a big time TE in Durham Smythe. ND has a deep class led by two elite front seven players.

#3| Florida Gators

Best Overall Player: Vernon Hargreaves III (FL, CB)
Best Defensive Player: Vernon Hargreaves III (FL, CB)
Best Offensive Player: Kelvin Taylor (FL, RB)
Immediate Impact: Demarcus Robinson (GA, WR)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Alvin Bailey (FL, WR)
Surprises: None

Thoughts: The Gators class is headlined by Vernon Hargreaves, an elite CB who has the potential to be a true "shut down" corner. Florida landed one of the top LB classes in the nation which include Alex Anzalone (nominee for the Gunner Kiel Award for the strangest recruitment of the year), Matt Rolin, Daniel McMillian (all 3 of whom enrolled early). The skill talent the Gators landed is also very impressive and possibly underrated, with WR (and return man extraordinaire) Alvin Bailey being one of my favorite's in the class. Florida landed very solid DL and DB classes as well.

T-#4| Ohio State Buckeyes

Best Overall Player: Vonn Bell (GA, DB)
Best Defensive Player: Vonn Bell (GA, DB)
Best Offensive Player: Ezekiel Elliott (MO, RB)
Immediate Impact: Jalin Marshall (OH, WR)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Marcus Baugh (CA, TE)
Surprises: Vonn Bell (Victory over Tennessee and Alabama)

Thoughts: Urban Meyer's forte is speed and he certainly added that with this class. OSU landed one of the top DB classes in the nation led by signing day surprise, Vonn Bell. OSU landed speed and athleticism at every offensive skill position, including TE where Marcus Baugh is one of the top TE prospects in the nation and Urban Meyer has had a history of utilizing his TE's well. Joey Bosa is a very talented and "safe" prospect that leads a solid front 7 haul that contains other players that are more boom or bust type players and/or candidates for position switches. JT Barrett was one of the top QB prospects in the nation before his injury, if he comes back healthy, he is the heir apparent to Braxton Miller in Columbus. The weakness of this Buckeye class is the lack of OL, which may cause the OSU staff to move a couple DL prospects (Price, Munger) to the offensive side of the ball. The Buckeyes are tied for 4th with their arch-rival not only due to the closeness in talent level, but also because of the contrasting styles of their classes (more in a moment).

T-#4| Michigan Wolverines

Best Overall Player: Derrick Green (VA, RB)
Best Defensive Player: Dymonte Thomas (OH, S)
Best Offensive Player: Derrick Green (VA, RB)
Immediate Impact: Derrick Green (VA, RB)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Channing Stribling (NC, CB)
Surprises: None

Thoughts: The Wolverines tie their arch-rival using a different approach. The Wolverines class focused heavily in physical play and the trenches, showcased by one of the top OL and RB classes in the nation. Michigan added 6 OL in this class, with 5 of them being All-Americans along with 3 talented, powerful RB's led by Derrick Green and DeVeon Smith. Shane Morris is one of the top QB's in the nation and TE Jake Butt is one of the more talented TE's in the nation. Defensively, the Wolverines added talent at every level. All 3 DL commits were All-Americans led by DT Henry Poggi, but DE Taco Charlton has the highest potential as he is a 6'6 260 pound pass rushing freak who has enrolled early. The Wolverines have a nice mix of top end talent in the secondary led by S Dymonte Thomas and some raw boom or bust talent as well. If there is a weakness in this class it is the lack of speed and outside play-making ability at the WR position.

#6| Ole Miss Rebels

Best Overall Player: Robert Nkemdiche (GA, DL)
Best Defensive Player: Robert Nkemdiche (GA, DL)
Best Offensive Player: Laremy Tunsil (FL, OL)
Immediate Impact: Laquon Treadwell (IL, WR)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Devante Kincaid (TX, QB)
Surprises: Laremy Tunsil (Victory over Alabama and UGA)

Thoughts: The Rebels are the surprise team on National Signing Day, as no team in the nation closed better. DE Robert Nkemdiche, OT Laremy Tunsil, WR Laquon Treadwell, and S Tony Conner are all elite level prospects. Ole Miss added several talented RB's led by Jordan Wilkins and Kailo Moore. Nobody outside of Alabama has as much top-end talent as Ole Miss does in this class, however Ole Miss lands at #6 due to not having nearly the depth as the teams above them do.

#7| LSU Tigers

Best Overall Player: Tre'Davious White (LA, CB)
Best Defensive Player: Tre'Davious White (LA, CB)
Best Offensive Player: Ethan Pocic (IL, OL)
Immediate Impact: Frank Herron (TN, DE)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Christian LaCouture (TX, DL)
Surprises: Tashawn Bower (Victory over Florida and Auburn)

Thoughts: The LSU Tigers finish with possibly the most overlooked top 10 class of the year. LSU is known for defense, but they added a very good offensive class led by OL Ethan Pocic and Josh Boutte, WR's Avery Johnson and John Diarse, TE DeSean Smith, and QB's Anthony Jennings and Hayden Rettig. The Tigers boast one of the top DL classes in the nation led by DE Frank Herron and DT Greg Gilmore. LB Kendall Beckwith, CB Tre'Davious White, and CB Jeryl Brazil lead a very talented, very athletic back seven class.

#8| Florida State Seminoles

Best Overall Player: Matthew Thomas (FL, LB)
Best Defensive Player: Matthew Thomas (FL, LB)
Best Offensive Player: Ryan Green (FL, RB)
Immediate Impact: Jalen Ramsey (TN, CB)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Marquez White (AL, CB/ATH)
Surprises: Matthew Thomas (Victory over Miami) and Jalen Ramsey (victory over USC and Florida)

Thoughts: The Seminoles were big winners on Signing Day as they snagged two elite defensive play-makers in LB Matthew Thomas and CB Jalen Ramsey. The aforementioned defensive standouts are also joined by elite DE prospect DeMarcus Walker to lead a very strong defensive class that has talent and speed at every level. Offensively, Ryan Green is one of the most versatile RB's in the nation and OG Ira Denson is one of the strongest players in the country. FSU also managed to add speed and size at WR.

#9| UCLA Bruins

Best Overall Player: Priest Willis (AZ, DB)
Best Defensive Player: Priest Willis (AZ, DB)
Best Offensive Player: Asiantii Woulard (FL, QB)
Immediate Impact: Tahann Goodman (CA, S)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Kenny Lacy (AZ, OL)
Surprises: Eddie Vanderdoes (Committed to ND)

Thoughts: The Bruins land a very talented class that is led by one of the best DB classes in the nation as well as a very good OL class. The Bruins benefited from a couple of USC defections including DE Kylie Fitts and WR Eldridge Massington. Asiantii Woulard was a nice signing day snag from across the nation, Woulard will have time to sit and learn before taking over for Brett Hundley. Isaac Savaiinaea, Deon Hollins and Myles Jack will add talent to the LB unit.

#10| Texas A&M Aggies

Best Overall Player: Ricky Seals-Jones (TX, ATH/WR)
Best Defensive Player: Isaiah Golden (TX, DT)
Best Offensive Player: Ricky Seals-Jones (TX, ATH/WR)
Immediate Impact: JaQuay Williams (VA, WR)
Undervalued/Sleeper: Hardreck Walker (TX, DT)
Surprises: Daeshon Hall (flipped from Washington)

Thoughts: The Aggies land in the top 10 thanks to class size and a very strong WR and DL (particularly DT) haul. TAMU added size and speed to the WR core giving Manziel plenty of weapons to choose from. Ricky Seals-Jones, JaQuay Williams, and Sebastian LaRue headline the WR class. The Aggies have added the heir apparent to Manziel in Kohl Stewart and Kenny Hill. S Kameron Miles and OT Ishmael Wilson are talented players that may get overlooked due to the strong DL and WR class respectively.

ACC:

1| Florida State Seminoles
2| Virginia Tech Hokies

Despite a poor season on the field, Virginia Tech finished with a very talented recruiting class led by CB Kendall Fuller and S Holland Fisher who both have elite potential. DL Wyatt Teller is a strong DL prospect and LB Jamieon Moss is an athletic tackling machine that the Hokies had to fight to keep away from Michigan and FSU who pursued him late. QB Bucky Hodges leads the way for the offensive class of the Hokies.

3| Miami Hurricanes

The Canes, despite looming sanction, finished with a very strong class with top talent on both sides of the ball. QB Kevin Olsen is one of the top signal callers in the class and will be joined by talented players on the outside in WR Stacy Coley and TE's Beau Sandland and Standish Dobard. DE Alquadin Muhammad and DB Artie Burns are big time talents that lead the defensive class for the Canes.

4| Clemson Tigers

The Tigers finished strong on signing day snagging top flight CB MacKensie Alexander and OL Tyrone Crowder. DE Ebenezer Ogundeko, LB's Dorian O'Daniel and Ben Boulware join Alexander to form the top end of a talented defensive class. Tyshon Dye is a talented RB and joins Crowder as the headliner of the offensive class for Clemson.

5| North Carolina Tar Heels

UNC had a smaller class, but was still able to add some top end talent. QB Mitch Trubisky is a talented dual-threat signal caller and leads the offensive class along with RB TJ Logan. Defensively the Tar Heels added several talented players up front with DT Greg Webb and DE's Dajaun Drennon and Nazair Jones. Desmond Lawrence and Brian Walker are a pair of talented CB's.

Big East:

1| Louisville Cardinals

Charlie Strong & Co. land the Big East's top recruiting class led by the top player in the state of Kentucky, WR James Quick. Strong's Florida influences remain strong for Louisville as 7 of Louisville's 16 commits are from the Sunshine State. KY QB Kyle Bolin joins Quick and FL WR Richard Benjamin to form a solid group of skill players. FL DL De'Asian Richardson and Kyle Shortridge lead the defensive class for the Cardinals.

2| Rutgers Scarlet Knights

After having a very good class last year, the 2013 Rutgers class comes down to reality, one that is not nearly as talented or top heavy as last year's class. The class is led by ATH Nadir Barnwell who most (including myself) expect to end up at CB where he can be a very good player. Barnwell is the clear headliner for this class. Myles Nash is a 6'5 200 pound athlete (who I think will end up at LB, possibly DE) who could make some noise once he hits a college weight room and gets some experience/development.

3| Houston Cougars

Houston edges out Cincinnati and South Florida due in large part to two players who I think can (and should) excel in the Cougar offense, QB John O'Korn and TE Deondre Skinner. While O'Korn isn't a special talent, he has enough skills to succeed in an offense that likes to throw the ball around and will have targets like Skinner and 2012 WR recruit Deontay Greenberry. O'Korn had offers from Wisconsin, UNC, MSST, Louisville, and others but ultimately chose the Cougars. Skinner is the prize, an athletic TE from Louisiana who spurned offers from LSU, TAMU, and Arkansas among others.

4| South Florida Bulls

Willie Taggert is a very good coach and recruiter that will eventually have USF among the top recruiting classes in the conference. 18 of the 23 commits hail from Florida, with ATH Lamar Robbins (offers from OU, TAMU, UCLA, Auburn, Louisville and others) and DT Deadrin Senat (offers from FSU and SCAR) leading the way.

5| Cincinnati Bearcats

Cincinnati's class struggled due in part to a coaching change that saw Butch Jones and multiple staff members leave for Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville leaving Texas Tech to take the reigns atop the Bearcats coaching staff. TE Travis Johnson leads the Bearcat class that includes 5 JuCo transfers.

Big Twelve:

1| Texas Longhorns

Texas suffered from decommittments, other teams dipping into the top end Texas talent pool more than normal and had a small class, but still managed to edge out the #1 spot in the conference led by one of the most talented OL hauls in the nation. In addition to the great OL class, Texas landed one of the top WR (also one of my favorite) in Jake Oliver and one of the top CB in Antwuan Davis.

2| Oklahoma Sooners

RB Keith Ford is one of the most talented RB's in the nation and headlines the Sooner class. Joining Ford on the offensive side of the ball include QB Cody Thomas and WR Stanvon Taylor. DE DJ Ward, CB LJ Moore and S/LB Hatari Byrd headline the defensive class for OU.

3| Baylor Bears

Baylor is beginning to capitalize off of their recent success. WR Robbie Rhodes is an elite level WR prospect and the headliner of the class. Rhodes is joined by Kyle Fulks and Quan Jones to form a very talented WR haul. LB Brian Nance rejoins the Baylor commitment list after spending the year in prep school. DT Andrew Billings was a late snag and major get over the Texas Longhorns.

4| Oklahoma State Cowboys

OKST's class is led by the WR position and Ra'Shaad Samples and Marcell Ateman. DT Vincent Taylor is the best defensive prospect for the Cowboys.

5| West Virginia Mountaineers

WVU had an interesting first season in the Big 12, starting off strong and finishing awful. As a result the Mountaineers struggled some on the recruiting trail. Chavas Rawlins is an intriguing dual-threat QB prospect, but will need time to develop or else he will likely end up at WR. WR Shelton Gibson and OL Marcus Lazard headline the class for WVU.

Big Ten:

T-1| Ohio State Buckeyes
T-1| Michigan Wolverines
3| Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska, despite suffering several decommittments down the stretch, come in as the 3rd ranked class in the B1G. Terrell Newby and Adam Taylor are a pair of extremely talented RB's. QB Johnny Stanton is one of the top dual-threat QB's in the nation which along with the RB's and a solid OL class should help Nebraska continue their tradition of strong running teams. DE Randy Gregory is one of the top JuCo pass rushers in the country and should provide an immediate impact. Marcus Newby, Courtney Love, and Josh Banderas form one of the better LB classes in the conference.

4| Penn State Nittany Lions

PSU did a remarkable job of putting together this class despite heavy NCAA sanctions. QB Christian Hackenberg and TE Adam Breneman are both elite level prospects at their respective positions. The Nittany Lions also added a pair of solid OL in OT Andrew Nelson and interior OL Brendan Mahon. DE Garrett Sickels and LB Zayd Issah lead the defensive class.

5| Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers went through a coaching change and managed to keep most of their commits, though the losses that were sustained were enough to drop the Badgers a bit. RB Corey Clement is a top flight back who will be the next in line of talented Badger backs. Chikwe Obasih and Alec James are a pair of talented DE's with good upside. OT Jackson Keeler is likely to be the next in line of great Wisconsin OT's and the Badgers were able to keep him through the coaching change despite plenty of new suitors. QB Tanner McEvoy and WR Rob Wheelwright are two others that could make some noise sooner rather than later.

SEC:

1| Alabama Crimson Tide
2| Florida Gators
3| Ole Miss Rebels
4| LSU Tigers
5| Texas A&M Aggies

PAC-12:

1| UCLA Bruins
2| USC Trojans

The Trojans suffered from an awful year, coaching changes before and after signing day, and the biggest decommittments any class has taken this year. Despite all of that, USC still managed to land one of the most talented classes in the nation. QB Max Browne leads the offensive class that includes a pair of highly talented RB's in Justin Davis and Ty Issac. The Trojans secondary, despite the decommittments it suffered is still one of the best in the nation featuring S Leon McQuay, S Su'a Cravens, and CB Chris Hawkins.

T-3| Washington Huskies

Tosh Lupoi strikes again. The Huskies lead recruiter helped Washington land a talented class headlined by QB Troy Williams, WR's Darrell Daniels, Demorea Stringfellow, and John Ross, DL Joe Mathis and Elijah Qualls, and CB Jermaine Kelly.

T-3| Oregon Ducks

The Ducks are yet another team that experienced a coaching change that had a negative impact on their recruiting class. Still, the Ducks managed to close with a very impressive offensive class led by RB Thomas Tyner, OL Cameron Hunt, WR Devon Allen, and WR Darren Carrington. The Robinson twins (Tyree and Tyrell) join DE Torrodney Prevot and DB Chris Seisay headline the defensive class.

5| California Golden Bears

The Cal Bears suffered due to a coaching change, but still managed to bring in a decent class. CB Cameron Walker and DE Takkarist McKinley lead the defensive class for Cal. OL Erik Bunte and Aaron Cochran join QB Jared Goff and RB Khalfani Muhammad as the leaders of the offensive class.

Good write up on UH. I really was excited when we got O'Korn especially since our QB situation is horrible with Piland returning. We also got Billy Cosh, a JUCO QB to sign with us so the QB competition is going to be wide open this coming season. I hope Levine and Meacham use Skinner in this offense. We rarely use the tight ends and Meacham has a good pedigree coming over from OK st. Those 2 recruits are the ones that stand out. I'm glad we were able to sign some guys on the DL also.

I know Ohio State brought in only 2 OL this year, but they brought in 4 last year, including highly ranked Decker and Dodson, and were likely looking ahead to next years class where they were planning on bringing in 4+ OL in which they already have 1 4* OT already committed and are very high on the lists of several others. So although more would've been nice, all Ohio State fans would admit that, the only way Munger or Price move to the OL is if there are major injuries because as of right now they have 14 scholarship OL.

UM's class and tOSU's classes are not even close. Why do you always try to subliminally try to put UM in the same class as tOSU. The only thing elite about UM's recruiting class is their OL. Their QB is widely know as being severely overrated and it showed during the season as well as the camp season. McCray is also overrated.

We recruited a whole offense that could be the best in the B1G as freshmen. As well as the top DB class and two 5* LB's. OL dont put up points.

Talk about your 2*/3* receivers our worst receiver would start for you guys as a freshman, man calm down trying to put us on the same level, WE ARE NOT ON THE SAME LEVEL.

1.Alabama
2a. tOSU
2b. ND
3.Florida
and whoever else

Thanks for the info 1king, really helpful for someone like me trying to understand HS football better even though I have no team. Laughing

You think DeMarcus Robinson has more of an impact than Taylor? I would think with Gillislee leaving there's more of a chance for Kelvin to work his way in right?

2a. tOSU
2b. ND

Yes they are close. I put them as tied because of the closeness and the fact the are constructed differently (and the offenses value things differently) and thus harder to compare (i.e. it makes no sense to compare OL to WR). And these are my rankings, I obviously feel some of OSU's guys are overrated and some of UM's guys are underrated. You are welcome to make your own rankings.

This class:

Offensively:

QB: UM > OSU
RB: UM >> OSU
WR: OSU >>> UM
TE: UM => OSU
OL UM >>> OSU

Defensively:

DL: UM => OSU
LB: OSU => UM
DB: OSU >> UM

Go ahead and talk about our WR class (which I already admitted is a weakness), I'll just talk about your OL class, or lack thereof. Much easier to overcome a weak WR unit than it is a weak OL.

If you have any specific questions or complaints, go ahead and make them and I can respond. Saying vague comments doesn't really prove anything nor can they be argued with anything other than more vague comments.

Quote:
I know Ohio State brought in only 2 OL this year, but they brought in 4 last year, including highly ranked Decker and Dodson, and were likely looking ahead to next years class where they were planning on bringing in 4+ OL in which they already have 1 4* OT already committed and are very high on the lists of several others. So although more would've been nice, all Ohio State fans would admit that, the only way Munger or Price move to the OL is if there are major injuries because as of right now they have 14 scholarship OL.

I'm aware of that, though I believe 1 of the 4 from last year has already transferred. This is also only commentary on this year's class, which regardless of the 2014 or 2012 class, is lacking in terms of OL and OSU missed on pretty much all of the top OL they targeted.

Great insight by you as usual. Shocking. If you have an actual comment or question, feel free to make it.

Possibly. Taylor was one of several I considered, but I thought I'd include a different player instead of listing Taylor again, also think Robinson has a high chance to come in and get major PT as the Gator WR weren't all too impressive last year.

Even experts have it close.

Not even sure OSU is top 4 let alone number 2

I don't follow recruiting nearly as close as most of you.

But, I'd be willing to bet a substantial amount of money that Wisconsin will be in the top 5 of the Big Ten over MSU even though MSU is ranked higher on most sites.
