1. Where did the name SpacemanSpiff come from? What does he do throughout the day? Student or career or bum?
| Quote: | SpacemanSpiff is taken from one of my favorite comic strips of all time, Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. He's Calvin's space traveling alter ego he invents and is used as a sort of literary device to explain how Calvin views a lot of people in his life he doesn't identify with as aliens. I don't know why the name really occurred to me when I made my account, but it was a great choice.
SpacemanSpiff the guy is a 22-year-old student studying journalism at the University of Florida. I worked a lot for the Independent Florida Alligator, the student publication doing news writing of various sorts. I always had the intention of getting into sports. Once I did, I found I really hated it. The environment is straight up hostile. The reporters are all super cliquey, and the sports information departments do everything they can to make your job as difficult and miserable as possible. It got old fast, and I went back to my love affair with news and actually got the opportunity to run the show as an editor (though I got out of the game before I became editor-in-chief.) Nowadays, just working toward graduating and playing drums in various bands around Gainesville. |
2. What is your favorite genre of music and who is the greatest band out right now? GOAT?
| Quote: | Oh man. I guess I'd have to say indie rock because that's the music I connect with the most on a regular basis, but if you've ever kept an eye on what I'm listening to on Spotify, you'd see it's all over the map. I've been really into Dixieland jazz lately. The best band out right now? Another nearly impossible question to answer, but gun to head, I'm going to go with Sigur Ros. Nobody understands how to craft beauty and package it into music the way they do.
The greatest of all time is Led Zeppelin. Period. Done. End of debate. |
3. Where do you sit on the Hass or Locker fence? Should we give the keys to Locker, regardless of TC, or go with the veteran again?
| Quote: | | I've always been one of the few who has stood up to support Hasselbeck. Either way we go with it, I won't be mad. Both guys have their pros and cons, and I think if CJ2K reappears for the full season, both guys will be able to run the offense effectively. Having healthy receivers will help as well. |
4. Who are your favorite sports teams, and why?
| Quote: | Pro Football: Tennessee Titans, obviously. I got into them because I loved Steve McNair, Eddie George, Frank Wycheck and Jevon Kearse. The next year, they cut George, Wycheck retires and Kearse leaves in FA. Then two years later McNair gets traded too. But, I've stuck with them through thick and thin.
College Football: Born in Gainesville, so the easy answer here is the Florida Gators. Grew up watching Spurrier make magic with Danny Wuerffel, blocked out the Ron Zook era from my memory and cry myself to sleep every night wishing Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin and Urban Meyer would come back. O.K., that's not true. I'm optimistic about what Will Muschamp can build now that he's rid of Brantley.
Pro Basketball: Chicago Bulls. My dad's from Chitown, so I got a healthy dose of watching Michael Jordan make it rain greatness on the NBA. You can take anything you have to say about LeBron James being better elsewhere. He may be a more freakish athlete, but there will never be another basketball player that dominated the game the way Michael Jordan did -- except maybe Omer Asik if he learned to shoot like Dwayne Wade.
Pro Baseball: Tampa Bay Rays. Got to catch a lot of their games on TV, and I just like the way they do things: have great pitching, get guys on base and then have a guy like Carlos Pena come up and blast it out of the park to score runs in chunks. Doesn't always work that way, but I respect the strategy … and Maddon's shades. |
5. You can have dinner with any three people from history. Who are you eating with, and what are you having?
| Quote: | At this dinner party, we'd have my favorite foods: Prime Rib with au jus, creamed spinach, truffle fries and caesar salad and several types of fine wine. I'd invite
Louis Armstrong. He just seems like such a cool guy to hang out with and talk music with. I'm not even close to his level in terms of musicianship, but I'd just relish the opportunity to meet a musician of that class and also a person of that caliber. He just seems so larger than life whenever he speaks.
Vince Lombardi. I would love to chat with him about how to really command people's respect and become a good motivator and leader.
and Sara Bareilles. I'm hoping the wine would have the proper effect and lead to some sort of late night encounter. Plus, having Bareilles jam with Armstrong would be nasty. |
6. What is your favorite book and favorite movie of all time?
| Quote: | | Favorite book is 1984. Favorite movie is Forrest Gump. Seriously, if you do not like the magic that is Forrest Gump, we can't be friends. |
7. Who would you say is your most hated rival?
| Quote: | | Most hated rival is definitely FSU. I hate everything about Tallahassee (except they've got some good punk bands there.) |
8. Is any player in the NFL worth 40 million dollars for one season?
| Quote: | | No. Not at all. To me, there is no player worth even a quarter of that for one season. I get that football is a big, profitable business, but deals like Calvin Johnson's are just disgusting to me. |
9. Are the Titans a snake-bit franchise?
| Quote: | | No, I don't think so. They've actually been a really successful small-market team for several years and I think they're building toward great things. |
10. "titanrick, EliteTexan80, stallyns, and the Jags mod walk into a bar..." Finish this story.
| Quote: | | … the band is playing Born in the USA. They all buy their drinks and begin discussing ways to get them to stop. The Jags mod says he hates that song and tries calling Tim Tebow to come and get them to stop. Tebow declines and goes to some bar in New York instead. Jags mod cries and calls Blaine Gabbert. Too bad Blaine's playing with his hair. stallyns is ignoring the problem. Instead, he's hitting on college girls at the bar, ignoring phone calls from his sick wife at home. Meanwhile, TR and ET begin arguing over who gets to be the man to punch the singer, which would effectively end the band's reign of terror. ET crushes TR's soul with one-yard-short insults. TR responds by reminding ET of Dom Capers. Ultimately, the song ends. They never get to punch the singer. stallyns' wife leaves him, so he walks off with the hottest college girl in the room, while the Jags mod cries in the corner about how he couldn't get Tebow to come save him. |

I agree. Love that movie. It is one of the strangest movies ever given that it's not a true story and it doesn't seem to have point to it. Yet, I'll be darned if I'm not wiping back tears every time he's talking to Jenny's gravestone at the end.

Man, that was a depressing story. I kept waiting for the "punchline"
I could see hanging with ET80 in a bar though. I would just remind him how he owes all his fame and fortune to me. _________________

I hope you realized my story is an allegory to the state of the AFC South.
And that you enjoyed the rest of the Q&A. _________________

I am slow, but yes - I got it. And of course the rest was enjoyable as well.
So the band playing "Born in the USA" was the Patriots? Clever... _________________
