http://www.fangraphs.com/community/baseballs-biggest-market-inefficiency/

Very interesting article that basically takes the total budget for each team, assigns the expected WAR values, and then looks at actual W-L records over a period of a GM's tenure. This caught me way off guard.

Quote:
Then there’s Billy Beane: the Billy Beane who the A’s are paying slightly less than Alberto Callaspo. Under his direction, the Oakland Athletics have won 171 more games than expected. Babe Ruth had a career WAR of 168.

Anyway, here's the graph of production vs. dollars spent:

Any thoughts?

Just confirming the notion that Billy Beane is in fact God.

Really awesome article though.

Yankees are in the black. Suck it haters.

And I'm actually pretty surprised the Tigers are as low as they are under DD. I guess they had a few years where they were paying guys like Ordonez and Pudge and losing 100+ games. Although can't help but feel that strategy worked out well.

And a point that obviously has to be made: a lot more goes into playing above your payroll than simply your GM's ability. You have a scouting staff, player development staff, manager, pitching/hitting coach, trainer, etc. So to look at the Win-$ diffirential and try to convert that to a free market value for a GM isn't going to work. The Rays might be $50 million better than they should be but that doesn't mean Andrew Friedman is worth $50 million a year.

Kind of affirms my thoughts that I'd rather have an elite GM over an elite player.

I wouldn't contribute a lot of those wins to Frank Wren. He has tried to kill this team in free agency. Signing BJ Upton, Dan Uggla, Derek Lowe, and Kenshin Kawakami. The credit goes to John Scherholtz when he was GM, and to the scouts and instructors who find the right guys and develop them.

As much credit that Gillick gets, most of that deserves to go to Ed Wade. The core and development was from Wade.

this is biased towards GMs that took over a decent/good team. Friedman is hurt by the terrible team he took over that took some time to rebuild. opposite is true for the Phillies.

Yeah, DD is definitely well above average in GM rankings through his tenure here. A few notable bad moves - Renteria trade was a fail but Jurjjens fell apart so whatever, extending Dontrelle was dumb but we still got Miggy out of the deal, then the recent Fister trade.

His trades really made the team. Turning Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller into Miggy was insane. Turning Edwin Jackson into Scherzer was insane. Granderson for Austin Jackson and Coke (meh) was great. Acquiring Fister for basically scraps (even if they ended up moving him for an arguably weaker package...) was amazing. Infante plus Anibal for Jacob Turner was great. Prince deal is in its infancy, but should be amazing towards the end of that contract.

Even his signings have usually worked out. How many busts have we brought in under him? Prince was a disappointment last year but was great his first year here. Magglio and Pudge each had some huge years here. VMart signing was great.

Interesting reading method, though. Far from an objective quantification of GMs, but interesting data. Brad Pitt, of course, is a legend.
