I actually still think Wells could produce if given at bats, but Bourjos is clearly better for that team.

We need to see how much money is heading back to New York before we evaluate the deal from that end. Vernon Wells is at least an above replacement level player and I'm not sure that's true, at this point, of Melky Mesa or any of the other guys we thought about throwing out there. Our projected opening day lineup produced about 12.5 WAR last season, and two thirds of that was our second baseman, so we really can use any help we can get over the first couple months of the season. Assuming the Angels are paying basically all of his salary, the deal is fine.

Source: Deal not done, but #Angels will pay at least $32M of $42M owed Wells. #Yankees' obligation will be less than $10M over two years.

So Hal wants to get under 149 million, scraps the plan AFTER free agency, then goes and gets Vernon freaking Wells. I'd rather just play like Tyler Austin instead. Laughing

Why can't we give Mesa, Almonte, anyone on the team a chance...

Why not give up a mid-range prospect or two and actually get someone that could be productive?

I'm sure that my Cubs would flip someone like Soriano or DeJesus (while paying most/all of their salary) for a mediocre prospect(s) with a little upside. Nothing crazy.

Once Grandy gets back, though, where does [insert productive player] play? If this was a permanent hole in the lineup I would absolutely agree with you. But I don't want to give up a couple of potential cost controlled big league players for two months of slightly better play in left field and then a decent bench player.

Giving a guy like Tyler Austin a shot might sound like the long-term, sensible, forward looking thing to do but you don't want to rush one of the best prospects in your system. Especially when that guy probably isn't going to help you out all that much. If Melky Mesa were hitting the cover off the ball, then ok. But he's hitting .189 and striking out a third of the time this spring. That's exactly what you'd expect - he's not a very good prospect.
