Just a starter.

My vote goes to Bulgaria's one man squad from 94. Yes, they had more history at World Cups and regional competitions but they beat quality teams in the knockout round and played Italy close. Probably would have lost to Brazil but still magnificent.

Turkey is a popular choice but I go with Bulgaria because it relied so heavily on 1-3 players. Turkey was just a lot of above average players fighting collectively.

South Korea in 02 was a pretty big shock.

Croatia '98 was awesome.

Second best Suker at the World Cup.

Hakan Sükür was better.

But did he win the Golden Boot?

I think not. Wink

Just looked on his Wiki page and it says he only represented Turkey at Euro 96' Euro 2000 and WC '02.

Teams Turkey eliminated in 2002

Costa Rica
China
Japan
Senegal

Hardly who's who of world football. IMO, Turkey was really lucky in that tournament.

As far as the most surprising game, it has to be "El Maracanazo." Heck the trophy already had Brazil printed on it before the match started, no one expected Uruguay would beat Brazil at Brazil in the final.

South Korea reached semifinals in 02 because of some polemic calls against Italy (Totti's red card, blatant no call in a PK) and Spain (two goals not called for Spain). They should have been eliminated in round of 16.

I'll take Senegal in 2002 as a whole perfomance that I remember (with Costa Rica this year - but that story has ended just yet), they were so close on reaching SF and they came out of nowhere. Beating France, drawing 3-3 with Uruguay and also drawing with Denmark (I can't remember how much). They were pegged to end up last in their group and made quite the run with Diop as their star.

Exactly why they're not number one for me. They were also competitive at Euro not long after so it was a short period of contention for them. Just because they hadn't had any success prior doesn't mean they were fluff.
