Known for many movies and the TV series Rockford Files.

Quote:
Garner starred in hit TV series almost 20 years apart -- "Maverick" in the late 1950s and "The Rockford Files" in the 1970s. He also had a notable film career, starring in such classics as "Sayonara" (1957), "The Great Escape" (1963), "The Americanization of Emily" (1964), "Grand Prix" (1966) and "Victor/Victoria" (1982), as well as the TV movies "My Name Is Bill W." (1989) and "Barbarians at the Gate" (1993). More recent films included "Space Cowboys" (2000) and "The Notebook" (2004).

He apparently died of natural causes. He was 86.

I know this may sound a little ignorant, but I can only recall him from the couple seasons of 8 Simple Rules that he appeared on.

Regardless, I thought he played his character exceptionally well, and was obviously talented enough to have such great longevity in Hollywood.

So sad. Crying or Very sad I was a big fan. He was truly one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history. My favorite performances of his were My Fellow Americans, Space Cowboys and The Notebook.

I'm under 30, so I didn't watch him in his prime, but I loved his performances in My Fellow Americans and the Mel Gibson Maverick. One of those times when you look at your phone/computer, see someone dies, and you really feel something. RIP.

His NY Times obit is a good read if you have a few minutes.

This was the guy on TV that I grew up idolizing as much as a kid can idolize someone on tv. Maverick reruns when I was a little squirt, The Rockford Files during my Jr High/HS years. Gosh, I still want a gold Firebird.

For those of you who are younger than I am, (and if you've got Netfiix) take a look at "The Rockford Files." A great "private eye" series where the lead guy (Garner) never wants to be the hero, but always ends up being just that. Also one of the most iconic tv theme songs of all time.

Some are on hulu for free as well. http://www.hulu.com/the-rockford-files

RIP, Mr. Garner.
