| Quote: | | 49ers are allowing the second-fewest points per game (16.2), and only the Ravens have a better mark (14.2 points per game). The 49ers have allowed TDs on only six of their opponents’ 19 trips inside the 49ers’ 20-yard line. That 31.6 % ranks as the best among red-zone defenses. The 49ers have the third-best turnover differential in the league at plus-8. Alex Smith’s 95.2 passer rating ranks eighth, but his 109.2 fourth-quarter rating is the fourth best. Gore has jumped up the charts, ranking fifth with 541 yards rushing. He also is 4-for-4 on third-and-one carries. Aldon Smith ranks fifth with 5 1/2 sacks; Justin Smith is tied for ninth (4 1/2) and Ray McDonald tied for 16th (3). The special teams units have been outstanding. (and more included on that) |

I think the most important stat is we are holding teams to field goals inside the red zone almost 70% of the time.. With our front 7 and physical d-backs, as long as big scoring plays are kept to a minimum we should hold most teams under 20 points.
The Philly game is really telling of how resilient the defense is.. We allowed a few huge plays to Desean and Vick, but they never got rattled by it.
| Quote: | | – The special teams units have been outstanding. The 49ers average the second-best starting field position in the league (26.1). David Akers’ kickoffs have produced the second-most touchbacks (22, one shy of the Ravens’ Billy Cundiff). Akers ranks third among kickers in scoring (57 points, 18-of-18 PATs, 13-of-15 field goals). Punter Andy Lee ranks second with a net average of 44.4 yards per punt. Ted Ginn has the fourth-best average with 13.7 yards per punt return. |
Field position, time of possession, and ball control are the keys to winning football games, and so far we have excelled at all three. _________________

Thanks for sharing. Our redzone defense was always stingy, and I'm happy that hasn't changed. _________________

Since the Ravens played one fewer game at this point, the 49ers should be 1st in that stat. Obviously after this sunday that will change but for homer reasons, lets go with the 49ers in first _________________

| Quote: | | At 5-1 the San Francisco 49ers have been one of the biggest surprises through the first six games of the NFL season. Their rise to the top of the NFL standings is no fluke and teams and fans across the country are starting to take notice of the 49ers. Advanced statistics are beginning to show just how the 49ers have been so good up to this point in the season. |

It's funny, I'm starting to see closet 49er fans coming out allover the place. _________________

i dont nessessarilycall them closet fans. but more of there wasnt anything positiiove going on so some fans just chose not to say anything at all.
also the stat above showing us as the number 1 redzone defense is key. i always use the phrase made by steve young where he said "everytime we kick a FG we get closer to losing the game" well when we hold teams to FG attempt, we are closer to winning that game.
and correct me if im wrong. but every team we have played this season has missed at least one FG so if we are limiting teams to FG attempts and they are missing them, we are definetly a team of desitny! _________________

The eagles game is a prime example IMO. When a team gets 500 yards and only 23 points, that is a win for the defense. _________________

I think it was more of a statement about others.
If you ask me, the more fans the better. We could use all the noise we can at the stick. _________________

Hahahaha no. I should have been more specific. I keep seeing people with 49ers bumper stickers, hats, jerseys, etc. I'm used to being the one. _________________

I agree. It was sickening seeing as many or more cowboys fans than 49er fans at the game. The saints was the same way last year. _________________
