Don't know why some of you voted for him, would be great to get some unbiased explanation in this here thread. | *Reads title* FF Ballon D'Or PurpleLion, you're taking this too seriously... And Lee, If I did the math right, Messi scored 43 goals in 2011. So 35 isn't that impressive #swag | FF-Forum members + Ballon d'or-best player in the world = who the forum members think is the best player in the world. It's not your favorite, not your hero, not the most likable, it's who is the best. I know what you mean, the best 3 always include the same relvolving 4 or 5 guys. Well, that's why they are the best. I don't understand the Ballon d'or thread, could very well have been named my favorite player. |
I just think growing up in North America, we tend to associate the best player in the world to the "most valuable" based on what we see here with MVP awards. I don't think it is hard to see why members of this board see that Robin van Persie is an exceptionally valuable member to Arsenal. The goal tally he has had this season to the immense and almost half of Arsenals tally. If you include assist, he accounts for 61% of Arsenals offense. _________________

If you mean competition for the top spot, yeah it typically is.
But La Liga is a lot more competitive than you guys are giving ti credit for. _________________

The Bilbao's, Villarreal's(not this season), Valencia's, Sevilla's, etc are not bad sides by any means but the bottom end of the table is pretty bad. _________________

I'm talking about the competition between the top two and everyone else. _________________

In England there are 6 or 7 very good teams. In Spain there are 2 exceptionally good teams. The competition and level of parity in the EPL far, far exceeds La Liga. _________________

Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, West Brom. | The West Brom who just drew 0-0 with Man City(the team leading the league?). Blackburn are woeful but in all honesty their squad isn't really that bad, they have a bad manager and a fan base who isn't exactly supportive. I think West Brom and Blackburn would win handily against the teams in the same position in the La Liga table. Wigan and Bolton are woeful at the moment but they aren't any worse than the La Liga relegation canidates, in fact both teams have quite a few handy players. _________________

There was football before this August you guys know, it's when Messi was scoring in the Champions League, the winning match and when Cristiano Ronaldo was driving Real Madrid into the semis. Arsenal was only playing in the Premiership and trying for a placement next season. I've been the fan of Arsenal for awhile, they got past Wright, Bergkamp, Henry, Cesc and others. They would still get top 6 in the Premiership even if they sold Van Persie. He was part of the drop into the bottom half, even if it wasn't only his fault, he's getting them up, that's what you're supposed to do. The great players don't allow their club to drop and those who do, don't win the award for the best player in the world.

Blackburn just beat United. West Brom held Spurs to a single goal. That just doesn't happen in Spain. _________________

You honestly believe Arsenal would be top six without Van Persie right now? You must be having a laugh. Who exactly would be scoring the goals for them right now? Gervinho?, Walcott?, Chamakh?. Come on man. Like Dot said he is 61% of their offense at the moment, if that doesn't count for something I really have no idea what does. Yes Messi and Ronaldo made deeper runs in the CL but they have much, much, much better teams surrounding them. _________________

West Brom 0-0 Man City
Sunderland 1-0 Man City
Blackburn 3-2 Man Utd
Fulham 1-1 Chelsea
Newcastle 3-0 Man Utd
Fulham 2-1 Arsenal
And that's in the last month! I personally don't think La Liga is as weak as most do but I think the EPL is much deeper and has more parity in it than La Liga does. _________________

Or maybe it's just that the top teams in the EPL aren't as good as you guys think they are. _________________
