Yeah. I'll be down in Athens by midnight for the announcement tomorrow. Yup. Perfect. Thanks for the opportunity.
The bald man hangs up the phone and leans his chair back. His hands are on his head and his elbows are out.
How did the interview go?
His wife appeared in the room.
I got it. We should be flying out to Athens tomorrow. I think I need to call my dad about this. All our stuff should be moved out of San Diego by the end of the week.
ESPN Breaking News: The Georgia Bulldogs hire "QB guru" George Whitfield Jr as their QB coach for the next 3 season. Mike Bobo the former offensive coordinator/QB coach will hand down the position to Whitfield late tonight.
May 7th, 2012
How y'all doing? First off I'd like to thank everyone in the Georgia football program, university, or even in the state. It's been a long road to get here. I was an honorable mention QB in Kansas. Played football for Jim Tressel before transferring to a division II school. I graduated and never got a shot in the NFL. I thought right then coaching was for me. Within two years I would start my journey bouncing around a handful of Arena football teams. In the mid 2000s I had my chance at the NFL. As an unpaid intern. I took advantage of that and learned all I could from Cam Cameron in that year before I started my own QB coaching program. Since then I have been coaching players in San Diego like Akili Smith, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Hunter Cantwell and a bunch of other guys that are still in school. I had calls from schools all over calling me. 9 total. I picked Georgia. Not because I liked Georgia more than the rest of them, but because Georgia picked me. The situation seemed too perfect for me to pass up. I think this is a little drawn out for a press conference for a positional coach so I'll rap this up quick. Thank you and go Dawgs!

ESPN Interview with the QB Guru:
When did you know you had a talent to coach quarterbacks?
I wouldn't say I have a talent. I know people that can play guitar and stuff, that's a real talent. But as far as when I knew I was good at teaching QB's....it was probably when I was in San Diego with Phillip Rivers. Cam Cameron really showed me everything I know. I really owe it to him. Otherwise I would still be trying to knock on doors of AFL GMs trying to let me back in.
Who's the best QB you have coached to this date?
Oh I really don't know. I have been blessed to work with some great ones. I can't really pick. Each of them bring something new to the table. Cam had crazy athletic ability, Andrew has the smarts of a Manning, all of them are different.
Why Georgia? Where there any other jobs you were thinking about?
Yeah actually. Georgia has always been a school I've liked since I saw Herschel Walker play for them when I was younger. Honestly though I almost coached at SDSU. The fact that I could stay in the town that started everything for me seemed too perfect though. I need to spread my wings and the SEC is one of the best places in the world for that. If I can pump out quarterbacks there then you can do it anywhere.
How's the QB battle look for this year?
Haha. I don't really think there is a battle at all. Aaron is the starter and I actually flew down yesterday to talk to him about some stuff I want him to work on. Just a couple drills. The people behind him on the depth chart aren't just spot holders though. Hutson Mason is going into his junior year with some motivation. Neither of us think that he really met his potential when Aaron went down. Christian LeMay wants his share too since he didn't see the field because of his redshirt last year. Then we have Kyle McConnell, the true freshman coming in, who tore up in Michigan. We have even talked about Derek Owens (Georgia corner) getting some practice snaps. _________________
Drive off into the sunset, you brilliant bastard.
|

Week 1 of the college football season, 2012
Alright good practice boys. See you all tomorrow.
Whitfield quickly enters the locker room before anyone else. He has dinner with his wife and family that started a couple minutes ago but he stayed and extended practice for the team to work on goal line drills. On the board is the 2012 schedule and the week 1 rankings. It looked like this:
Week 1-bye
Week 2-vs Buffalo
Week 3-@ #11 South Carolina
Week 4-vs FIU
Week 5-@ Ole Miss
Week 6-bye
Week 7-@ Tennessee
Week 8-vs Vanderbilt
Week 9-vs Texas A&M
Week 10-vs #13 Florida
Week 11-vs Mississippi State
Week 12-vs #17 Auburn
Week 13-@ Kentucky
Week 14-vs #22 Georgia Tech
Week 15-CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
1 Stanford
2 Oregon
3 Wisconsin
4 USC
5 Alabama
6 Oklahoma
7 LSU
8 Boise State
9 Nebraska
10 Georgia
Mark Richt walks out of his office to see Whitfield and the rest of the team staring at the whiteboard usually covered with strategy or recruiting plans.
AP has us ranked over all out opponents this year. We shouldn't lose a game. Too bad LSU and Alabama are so much better than us.
He slams down an Atlanta news paper with the Crimson Tide on the front page.
Games aren't played on paper boys.
The next day
So coach Whitfield how did your team use the extra time this week instead of getting ready to play a game.
Woah our guys are always ready to play. The Crimson Tide could be here tomorrow and we'd be ready. We just used it to advance some more training before we took the field with Buffalo.
How much have your guys improved through training this year?
All around we exceeded expectations. Specifically in my group though we saw a lot of growth. Aaron had the most growth of the 3 QB's in for the spring. It started clicking for him mentally this offseason. Hutson and Chris both gained a lot accuracy wise. If we need them to go in late in a game we know we can trust them at this point. I wish Ky could have been in earlier. He's getting better, but his body is still used to switching between baseball and football. I always give him crap for it. I always ask him if this is the sport he wants to be playing. He could make more money in a year playing baseball than I have in like a decade. At least we know his heart is in this.
What do you think about Murray being rated as high as the 7th best QB for the next year's draft?
I don't really want to talk about that at all haha. I hope we don't lose him, but sometimes QB's leave early. It's part of the game now. I'll tell you one thing, he's going to go a lot higher than 7th.
The day after
Whitfield picks up the Atlanta newspaper with huge headlines next to his picture. The entire interview he did with that reporter wasn't really mentioned at all except one sentence. The huge headline was "Whitfield: We are ready for the Crimson Tide".
It's a whole other animal here. _________________
Drive off into the sunset, you brilliant bastard.
|

Flash back: 2012 NFL Draft
And here we are at Radio City Music Hall in New York City! Goodell will be up soon with the first pick, owned by the New York Jets.
With the first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft....the New York Jets select....Andrew Luck QB Stanford
As expected the Jets go QB early with Luck. What do you think about this Mel?
Well he's a sure fire thing at the QB position. It doesn't happen often. He along with Landry Jones and EJ Manuel worked all offseason with George Whitfield who helped Cam Newton's evolution.
Cam really did make a huge impact his rookie year huh?
Well if you count going to the Pro Bowl, winning rookie of the year, and going to the Super Bowl a huge impact on a team that was worst in the league the year before then yes.
Ticker on ESPN shows Cam Newton's 2011 stats: 283/480 3.308 27 TDs 12 Interceptions and 2 rushing TDs
Next up is the Chicago Bears
| Quote: | 2 Chicago Bears Quinton Coples DE North Carolina
3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Kheeston Randall DT Texas
4 Houston Texans Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State
5 Indianapolis Colts Alameda Taamu DT Washington
6 Buffalo Bills Levy Adcock OT Oklahoma State
|
Now the Cardinals are on the clock. One of the teams who are possibly in the QB market.
Well I really think they have to go QB right now. 3 of the 4 1st round graded QB's are on the board and they can pick which ever one they want. Really it's just up to their scouts to earn their money on this pick.
With the 7th pick in the NFL Draft...the Arizona Cardinals select...Ryan Lindley QB San Diego State.
George Whitfield sits on his couch next to Andrew Luck (donning a Jets cap), Landry Jones and EJ Manuel.
Just remember that these teams passed on you.
Coach I'm fine. EJ let's go play some basketball. I got to get stuff off my mind.
Yeah.
Coach call me in if my phone rings or anything, k?
Got it.

Phone rings.
Hey what's up Norv! Yeah, you thinking about what? Well I think you got the right man. Yup. Yeah. Sounds great. He's playing basketball outside. I'll call him in.
San Diego, Chargers HQ
Norv we are changing our mind about the pick. Tell our rep. Going defense on this one. Rivers threatened a trade if we placed a 1st rounder behind him. It didn't go well. Cut our losses and go with D right now.
I already.....but....crap...fine
Radio City
With the 24th selection of the 2012 draft the San Diego Chargers select George Iloka DB Boise State
San Diego, Whitfield HQ
......
Are you kidding me?
With the 25th selection of the 2012 draft the Seattle Seahawks select Landry Jones QB Oklahoma
Great pick in my opinion. He's another one of the Whitfield QB's that was bread over the winter/spring.
Looking at the live feed on him in San Diego it looks like he is really happy. He's crying because of the pick.
San Diego
Lance, Lance! The Seahawks picked you.
He looks up to ESPN to see his name is flashing on the screen. His phone instantly starts to ring.
EJ you're next.

Recruiting news week 1 by The Atlanta Newspaper!
-The Georgia Bulldogs are off on the recruiting trail early as they didn't have to focus on a game this weekend. So far they have shown strong interest in three senior QBs from the SEC region.
-Ray Timmons is a 6'5" 205 QB from Jonesboro, Louisiana. Bobby McGuire is a 6'5" 197 QB from Donaldsonville, Alabama. Antonio Harris is a 6'6" 220 QB from Adamsville, Alabama.
-It seems like new QB coach George Whitfield is going after tall mobile QB's in the Cam Newton mold. When talking to those three recruits they all brought up the Cam Newton factor as a big ploy for the UGA program.
-Whitfield has taken a lot of heat for not going after Georgia (Catersville) native Michael Moore. He's a 6'0" 211 pocket passer who is arguably better than all of the current QB's being recruited for Georgia. He's nothing like the other QB's being recruited for the Bulldogs.
-Antonio Miller (#1 QB in nation) called UGA a "second talent" program in an interview yesterday. "It's down to LSU, Alabama, and Texas." Miller is from the same town in Alabama (Adamsville) as prospect Antoine Harris.
-From what I've been told no QB has been offered a scholarship at this point. UGA will be very selective with it's QB scholarships from what I've been told my the media director of the program.

Week 2, 2012
And then one of the final games of Saturday....Buffalo visiting Georgia in it's season opener.
The Buffalo Bulls didn't know what was coming for them when they went down to Athens to face the #9 Bulldogs this weekend. The Bulls started with a 6-0 lead but UGA scored 46 straight to send the Bulls back with their tails between their legs.
Junior QB Aaron Murray lead this team until the fourth quarter and has really improves his accuracy since last season, don't you think Mel?
You know he's no Darron Thomas or Robert Griffin but I think he can be a key player in the pro game.
Who all do you have above him so far for this class?
For right now? I'd have to say guys like Thomas and Griffin. Matt Barkley out of USC and Denard Robinson out of Michigan are both in front of him at this point. Depending on if Kyle Padron comes out he could even slip out of the top 5 QB's in this class. He should really stay in school for another year. He's in the same range as A.J. McCarron, Geno Smith, and Tajh Boyd. Danny O'Brien too if he didn't transfer to UConn for his senior year so he has to sit this one out. I think that back up for Murray is solid too. Only three passes but two were complete and one was for a touchdown.
Backup QB helps Bulldogs win
Huston Mason a backup junior QB got his first playing time of the year in the first game of his season. "It was pretty fun. I like when I actually get to play. Hopefully Aaron can lead the team to a couple more blow outs so I can see the field again this season." Mason threw 46 passes for 279 yards and 3 touchdowns last season in garbage time for the Dawgs. People inside the NFL have told us that Mason might be one of the best back up quarterbacks in all of college football. "He's awsome," said Whitfield, the QB coach of the Bulldogs. "One of the best pure passers I have seen. Our goal for him is to gain a little more arm strength for next year and compete for the starting job. It really sucks that we have two really good QB's that are the same graduating year. It sparks competition and they are good buds though. Depth sure isn't anything I can complain about too much. Hell maybe he will compete for the starting job next year. You can never pin starting QB's for their senior year it seems anymore."

Week 3, 2012
Alright so let's go over recruiting.
Who we got?
Only commit so far is Mike Larkin the WR from Union City.
Georgia? Homegrown kid?
Yup. He's not too big, 6 foot but has hands like none other.
Come on guys we got to get this thing moving. Who are we close to?
I could break it down position by position. As far as safety goes we are getting close to Washington. I love the kid. He's like a linebacker with speed. Kid is 6'5". Wright and Patterson are guys we could probably get if we wiggle them a bit. We got White and Neal as possibilities as nose tackles. Cooper, Nixon and Brown as defensive ends. Cooper and Nixon are as good as ours as far as I see it. Johnson, Riley, Hall all could be backers for us. Just depends inside or outside. Johnson said we are the only school he's really looking at hard at this point. He comes in on an official and he's ours. To join Larkins we got Henry and Jones. Jones probably won't want to come all the way from Washington to play over here. We we up there with Boise State, BYU and Washington until he saw Orson get most of the catches last game. Doesn't like that the TE gets the ball so much in out offense. Also has the BYU connection so I don't know if we can change that. Henry is a blue chip WR though and we need to steal him from Miami. Then we got the QB's. I don't really know anything about them though. Seems they only talk to Whitfield.
The scout looks over to Whitfield in an unkindly matter.
Want to tell us about them G?
Uh, yeah, sure. Well I'm talking to three kids at the moment. Ray Timmons, Ant Harris, and Bobby McGuirre. Harris is from Louisiana and the other two are from Alabama. All are big, tall, fast quarterbacks.
Why fast guys? We don't need fast QB's....we run an NFL type system.
Well things start in college and go to the NFL once they have to adapt. We all know that. The reason we are getting faster QB's is because teams are getting faster defenses and pass rushers. Lions and antelopes. We aren't going to fall back because of something small like QB speed. All these guys are great passers on the run. If we get them into a weight room like ours then the possibilities are endless.
Why are we going after three quarterbacks when we have four non-seniors on the roster?
Murray could be gone after this year. We all know that. Let's stop playing with that. If he comes back then great. If he doesn't then we will have a competition ready. Don't hang your hat on McConnell staying either. He wants to start somewhere. If he can't then he will transfer. If he can't do that then he will probably go to baseball and make millions. The Royals are begging him like everyday to leave the pigskin behind. We will not be held back.
