Per the San Diego Union-Tribune via Rotoworld:
| Quote: | The Chargers are expected to waive LT Marcus McNeill to clear $10 million in salary cap space.
McNeill must gain clearance from team doctors by March 15 to guarantee his $10.5 million guarantee. Chargers medical personnel won't be giving McNeill the green light after neck and back injuries limited him to 20-of-32 games the past two seasons. McNeill will head to unrestricted free agency, and the Bolts may try to re-sign Jared Gaither as his replacement. Feb 7 - 6:24 PM

This was the reason why the team was so insistent that the guarantees on his contract extension from 2010 only be year-to-year, because his spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine which I believe is also degenerative) was making him a greater and greater health risk as time went on. If we can re-sign Gaither we'll actually see an improvement in LT play (and be better safeguarded against the possibility of Kris Dielman retiring because Gaither showed better chemistry with Tyronne Green than MM did); I just hope there's some sort of protection against injury in the guarantees of Gaither's contract too considering his history of back/neck issues. _________________

That's a shame if he can't continue playing. His career had such a promising start. _________________

| I think it's going to be harder than people imagine for him to get signed somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not on an NFL roster at the start of the season. His back issues is going to make it tough for a team to clear him medically. |

I think someone takes a flyer on him - he's too talented for teams to be able to pass on the risk. That said, the risk is high for him, but the reward can be elite-level play. _________________

franchise tag on Jared Gaither I assume.
good move for SD if McNeill is a liability in terms of being available. Its a shame too, McNeill looked like a promising player, but you know his career was going to be cut short due to his spinal condition. thats why he was a 2nd round pick. |

If he's available still at the beginning of the regular season and can be had for cheap, I would consider looking at him. Unless we re-sign Dunlap, our only backup is Justice. Peters has a habit of getting hurt for a few snaps here and there. Mathis is also injury prone, and if he's re-signed and gets hurt, we could move Herremans back to guard and put someone else at tackle.
We wouldn't be relying on McNeil, so I'd take a flyer on him. Though I will say I doubt he ever returns to normal. _________________

To be fair, the only "elite" level play (I consider Elite to be Top 5) he's ever produced was his rookie season. Yes, he's been getting Pro Bowl recognitions off his name - and off of playing next to Kris Dielman - but his run-blocking is average at best (only time it was ever really great was his rookie campaign when he had two broken hands... go figure... and take that with a grain of salt because LT was still in his prime as a runner) and he's struggled mightily against speed rushers (Dumerville and Tamba both made him their collective redheaded step-child the several seasons) of late. Even in 2010 when he was extended he was effectively a slightly-above average LT who we quite frankly had no other option but to extend (at least for the short term - and it's appearing as though this sort of short-term extension may have been the FO's plan from the get-go) and as such had to pay Top 5 money in order to get the necessary out-clauses. _________________

Its a good thing JAred Gaither came in and decided to play like the best LT in the league because otherwise we'd be in such a bad situation. _________________

| Hard too see that. A guy with all kinds of talent that cant control what is happening to his body. Wish him health now and after football as well scary condition he has. |

Yeah, it sucks. But at the same time it was something he knew going into football even at an early age how risky it would be. Spinal stenosis is something you're born with; in all reality I can't imagine many doctors being all that thrilled about a teenage patient of theirs with the condition wanting to play football, much less a position that would require the kind of strain on the back and the additional gain in mass. _________________

Better hope he continues to do that after he gets a new contract. He's always been a guy that plays hard when he has to, but as soon as he's satisfied or upset about something, he stops. _________________
