IF you have been watching the newswire then you already know this story. It broke about 2 hours ago on NFL.com. Colts owner Jim Irsay says that he wants Peyton Manning, but the decision is up to him. Here's the link to that story on ESPN.com.

Well as Irsay said, its up to him. If he's smart he'll work with him to help the Colts salary cap and agree to a restructured contract.

If Jim was smart, he wouldn't have agreed to the contract that they signed... last year.
Manning has no reason to restructure, and if I'm not mistaken, I don't think he can even do so (something about having to wait 1 full year, I believe?).

This is HUGE news IMO as I think Peyton will want to stay in Indy. That way Luck isn't rushed into place. I think he'll be a Colt when it's all said and done now.

I think this is Smart by Irsay because if he just decided to cut Peyton Manning it would have looked bad for him but now he is turning the table and saying "Hey we want you back but a new Deal has to be made" If Manning decides to go somewhere else then Irsay can say I gave him the option to come back. IMO I think he decides to Sign with the Colts because I just don't think he can seriously go to any other team and say pay me this Money without knowing if he is Cleared to play or not.

Looks like my prediction of Manning staying in Indy could actually happen..100% makes the most sense of all scenarios.

No kidding. Irsay is just trying to save face by making it seem like Manning is pulling some strings here. We know that the probability of Peyton staying is low

I don't think he can per the terms of the contract. This is just Irsay trying to safe face and make it look like it was Manning who chose to leave instead of "helping the team" because the average fan isn't going to know that Manning couldn't restructure even if we wanted to. |

I didn't know who this owner was before this off-season aside from his name, but he annoys the hell out of me now.
"It's up to Peyton". Uh, no. It's up to you if you're willing to honor the contract you signed him to last off-season. What a clown.

Peyton belongs with the Horseshoe... I've said it all along, keep Manning, take Luck, create a Favre-Rodgers scenario, except keep Manning until he retires.
I don't give a damn about the salary cap... the Colts have never been the deepest team anyway, and QB play is the key to their success. Andrew Luck will be a very good pro QB, but I don't think he should start on day 1.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Tom Condon. The contract was designed to either set Peyton up to be among the highest paid players in the league for the remainder of his career or for him to get paid a substantial sum for a single year (one he didn't even end up playing in, but still was collecting weekly checks and a sizable bonus) AND hit free agency the following year where he would again get another contract amounting to enough money to feed a small country for the length of the season.
Ultimately I think Peyton's decision (at least so far as Condon tries to steer it) will come down to the state of his nerves at the time the decision needs to be made. If it's tenuous enough to call into question whether he'd pass the necessary physical with a new team to contract with them, he'll likely push him to opt for the option and to stay with the Colts (being that the contract is likely guaranteed for injury - this may be a hinging point however). If his nerves are in good condition (better than Michael Lombardi was reporting a week or so ago), they'll likely see what they can leverage the Colts into doing (i.e. assurances that if Luck is drafted that he's traded for the greatest return that helps the team on the immediate front) or they may just outright opt for the market. Just really depends on what Condon gauges the market at, as well.

To me, this looks like a cowardly move by Irsay. He says that the decision is "up to Manning," but, it really isn't. He is making a decision to keep Manning if Peyton agrees to a reduced salary. That's not really leaving the decision up to Manning. The salary number that Irsay is looking for is most likely unrealistic for any franchise quarterback, especially the top quarterback of our generation. He's trying to save face by not coming across like the bad guy who ran Manning out of town, when Peyton decides to move on from Indianapolis. When Irsay cuts Peyton, it will look like Peyton made the choice to leave the Colts when really, Irsay is holding all of the cards. I can't say that it's a terrible move politically, but I personally am not falling for his politics masquerading as thoughtfulness.
