Yeah, I don't get how people are looking at this as "big".

This is a tactful move by Irsay to make it seem like Manning chose to leave and chose money over the Colts. What Irsay is really saying is "If Manning takes a large pay cut, will keep him to groom our future.". Its really underhanded, if anything.

Maybe, but to the average fan it can still make Manning look like the bad guy. The more intelligent fan can see through the BS

Which was the point, this will be eaten up to discredit Peyton by media outlets just because that's the fun story to run with.

Huh? Ever heard of reading into something too much? The Colts are very likely to have a repeat year next season with Luck at the helm. They have way too many holes else where for Luck to over shadow. Manning knows that offense like the back of his hand and would instantly put that team back on the map. ( assuming he's healthy )

I truly believe they want Manning back and he will want to be back. I feel sometimes die hard fan's read into stuff TOO much sometimes and don't take it for what it is.

I agree that he's doing it to cover his rear to some degree, but he also realizes that they can't expect big things next year with a rookie QB at the helm. Not with all of their holes.

Smart PR move, but that's about it.

Come to find out Jim played 'Turn the page' on his guitar for a private super bowl party audience. I'm kinda thinking the other way now, as in Peyton will move on else where.

I think the Colts owner is incredibly annoying and there was no reason to put this out in the public but this is exactly what should be done. Yes, technically, it is up to him but Manning should only be brought back if he agrees to restructure his contract. That doesn't mean Manning has to but if he doesn't, he certainly should be cut. You'd be a moron to pay him $28 million.

Pretty sure, as has already been addressed in this thread that has about a 0% chance of happening since Peyton and his agent designed the contract to achieve exactly this end - forcing the Colts to either commit to Peyton until he retires or allowing him to hit free agency to find a team that will.

Not to mention, I get the feeling that too many people on these forums interpret "restructuring" a contract to mean that the player is going to take less money. 9 times out of 10 this is not the case (actually I think the average if even more in the favor of it not happening, I just wanted round numbers) and instead it's the payout schedule that's changed (how much and when). I have to ask... what in God's name would be Peyton's motivation, assuming he even could (as timing of when his last contract was issued may come into play), to move back his option bonus. And even if he did, it puts the Colts in an even great cap-crunch in those final years of his contract because there's even less contracted time to prorate the cap-hit of that option bonus over.

I agree that him agreeing to it is unlikely. But my point was what would the people criticizing the owner of Colts do instead. I don't think he should have made it public but I think, overall, he's doing what needs to be done. It's either agree to adjust/restructure your contract or you're out.

Really? New staff, new offense, but Manning knows it like the back of his hand? Even WITH Manning, they aren't going to be relevant for a couple seasons and keeping him slows the rebuilding due to the contract he is still worth.

The decision was already made. Like others have said this is just to make Manning look like the greedy bad guy so the organization doesn't get too much criticism for "running him out of town". I'm guessing the pay cut the Colts would require to keep Manning would be way less than his value on the open market and both sides know that.

New coach, probably a handful of key vets departing, and the #1 pick that will almost certainly be used to get the QB you hope will lead the team for the next 10+ years. It makes no sense for the Colts to keep Manning, or for him to stay in Indy, other than a pretty lame "legacy" argument.

Glad Irsay is finally saying something right after the Manning/Condon PR machine has basically made him look like the devil.

Peyton has chemistry with most of the guys on that offense, if not all. He is also one smart QB, he will pick up a new system quicker then ANYONE in the NFL.
