Love him, hate him, or remain neutral, the fact remains that Michael Vick is our starting quarterback.

With the Michael Vick offense we see a few things different from the McNabb era offense, here are some points of interest:

1) Boom or bust. The Eagles offense under Vick seems to be highlighted by the highlights and the low-lights. What I mean by that (since it doesn't make sense even to me) is that when the Eagles offense is on, it's really on. When it's off, it's frustrating to watch. Can Vick improve upon his efficiency?

There is some reason for optimism. This will be Vick's first off-season as the starting quarterback. Say what you will about Reid but for a quarterback like Vick, a full off-season as the focal point of the offense will be huge.

More reason for optimism is the fact that in the 4 game winning streak to end the 2011-2012 season, Vick posted his first 3 consecutive games with a 100 or over QB rating. They weren't terribly exciting games, but they weren't terribly frustrating either.

2. Run or not run? We still see Vick run from time to time. And when he does, we know he's still one of the most prolific running quarterbacks in history. He can outrun defenders to the edge and can keep plays alive.

I think a part of what he's had to do so far is cope with the fact that the offense needs him to become a pocket passer, or at least, a pocket passer first, and a runner second. The full off-season will help. But it still remains: how does Vick utilize his running ability?

Will he predictably run to his left almost every time he's in trouble? Will his running ability be used when all else fails? Will he try to remain in the pocket and reduce his running?

3. Injury. Can the guy stay healthy? Say what you will about the 2011-2012 season, a play here, a Mark Sanchez there, and we're in the play-offs.

The fact of the matter is, if your starting QB is missing time then you're in trouble. Ask Indianapolis.

4. Height. Will this remain a visible problem? Why do so much of his throws get batted down? Is it really height? There are other QBs who aren't much taller than Vick, yet, he seems to have his throws batted down quite often.

Will this change with the off-season?

I liked it better when we had D-Mac and KK! Cool

Luckily the FO is smart with how they structured his contract. Along with Andy and co....if he doesn't have a good year he's gone. But I think we will see the best consistent version of Micheal Vick this year, maybe one or none of the MNF vs the Skins level games, but consistent good level of play.

I'm expecting him to be better too.

A. If Mathis comes back, our offensive-line has the whole off-season to prepare and practice as a unit and we won't have rookies on the line.

B. Full off-season as the starter.

C. Not expecting Maclin to have any sickness issues, it was tough watching Vick in a short camp without Maclin or Jackson (hold out).

Yea, plus I think Andy will tweak the offense to not have quite as many risks or at least in some way help limit them. Also I think we will be adding either Plaxico if Desean is back or someone like Bowe or Floyd to be a much bigger target for Mike that will go up and catch the ball which will make Vick look better.

My predicted stateline for Vick this year is something like 4,000 passing yards (850 rushing yards) and 26 passing Tds (8 rushing) l 68% completion pct.

I love watching Mike Vick play. I haven't been this excited since McNabb early 00's.

This kind of athleticism amazes me. I get giddy like a little schoolgirl when watching him.

He needs to be smarter with the ball, and not just interceptions, but more fumbles. Half his interception were because of people hitting right before he threw the ball (Part of this is his fault, but also O-line for not protecting him better and Receivers getting open), or tipped pass by Receivers.

Ideally, Marty & Andy will use Shady more, but also get the backup Running back involved. And use Celek god dammit!

Yea

Yea I really hope we add a guy like LaMicheal James or Chris Rainey to play a Darren Sproles/ Dexter Mccluster type role. Getting a one dimentional "power" back would be a waste. Get a guy with a different skillset to add to the offense. And I think Part of Vick playing safer and smarter will include what we saw at the end of last year between Celek and Vick

I guess $4.2 million isn't too much to waste!

I remember two seasons ago watching Eagles games in my dorm room, I'd scream "MICHAEL VICK!" and do a lap up and down the hall and miss half of the next play.

Quote:
The Eagles had 38 total turnovers last season. Only one team - Tampa Bay with 40 - had more. Even more disturbing is that the Eagles turned the ball over a league-high nine times in the red zone. The Eagles, despite the red zone turnover issues, ranked 14th in the league in red zone offense with a 51.5 percent touchdown rate. However, the Eagles actually ranked fifth in the league in red zone scoring with 298 points.

Quote:
One suggestion from this perspective was to increase the run calls inside the 20, but a key statistic from Pro Football Focus points out that the Eagles called run plays 48 percent of the time inside the 20-yard line, making Philadelphia the 11th-most run-heavy offense in the red zone in the league last season.

Quote:
But there is more to it than run vs. pass. The Eagles haven't been dominant in the red zone since 2004 when they led the NFL in touchdown efficiency right up until the time that wide receiver Terrell Owens (14 receiving touchdowns) was injured. The Eagles had all the answers in the red zone, making sure they gave running back Brian Westbrook (3 rushing and 6 receiving scores) his touches. They had big running back Dorsey Levens (4 touchdowns) as a short-yardage hammer. Tight ends L.J. Smith (5) and Chad Lewis (3) combined for 8 scores. Donovan McNabb was by then long past his "running quarterback" days, but he still ran for 3 touchdowns.

What frustrates me the most about the Red Zone is that on a drive they'll try the same type of play when it doesn't work the first time. The amount of times we try pass / pass / pass or run / run / run on 1st and goal always amazes me.

Turnovers are key. Doesn't matter if Vick throws 2000, 3000 or even 4000 yards. If he doesn't cut down his turnovers, we ain't going to the playoffs.

Vick's career (at least with Philadelphia) is at a crucial point. An inconsistent year, and Andy, along with Vick will be shown the door.
