I like Whitner a ton, even when he was in Buffalo, but he doesn't move as well as a lot of SS in the league, he is a technique guy as was stated above, but I value play makers more then technique guys. Also this team has Reggie Smith who could fill that gap and Colin Jones, now Reg would be the guy as he has played in bothe spots back there, but either way he could fill the gap for a season or two.
As for the guys mentioned above, I disagree with Staley and Brooks being more valuable then Goldson and you can even make a case for Gore considering he is never healthy and his work load is always very high. Add to the fact that RB's can be made these days, ex. Anyone that has run for Denver in the last 10 years.
Willis is locked up, and so is Aldon, Cully shouldn't see any kind of a big contract until he shows he is a #1 DB, Rogers needs to get paid, but only on a 3 year deal do to age, Alex should get 3 years as well, but the key for him is if he can string together another good season, J. Smith as much as I love that guy is getting up there in age and even though he hasn't showed decline that has to be looked at when his deal is up.
The thing is you can get out of any contract in the NFL, all you have to do is give guaranteed money. Look at Brooks' deal how friendly of a deal is that for SF.
IMO Goldson deserves to be paid he has had 2 stellar seasons in the last 3 years, and him and Whitner are a good combo back there. |
I must say I disagree, I think Whitner is a huge part in why Goldson gets to gamble and be as much of a "playmaker" as you call him. I even remember someone posting an article in here this year with Whitner quoted saying that he can't take the kind of gambles or shots he'd like to because he always has to cover for Goldson or Rogers when they "guess" the wrong way.
We will have both back this season though and get to watch it from there. For now we'll have to disagree as my intentions for the Niners are to let him go after this season and draft TJ McDonald with the 32nd pick overall _________________
