The NFL Combine: Can we learn anything?

Don't forget to keep scrolling down... some interesting stuff... at least, me thinks...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who needs a strong NFL Combine performance?

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Who-needs-a-strong-NFL-Combine-performance.html

Quote:
WR Alshon Jeffery: South Carolina (6-4, 229)
A big wide out who lacks ideal top end speed and isn't a real explosive self-starter. He does display a little short area quickness for his size, however, not enough to consistently create legit separation off the line. Does a great job extending his long arms and adjusting to the football and the further down the field he can stride the tougher he is to cover. Nevertheless, Jeffery needs to prove he can run and in my mind anything in the 4.6 range is only going to add to the questions about his potential in the NFL.

WR Stephen Hill: Georgia Tech (6-5, 206)
Has a unique skill set, can pluck off his frame, track the football and is the next big time talent from the Georgia Tech program. Is going to need some time to develop, but can come in and track football vertically early on. Has a lot of upside to his game and skill set says he's an NFL starter. However, much like Jeffery these bigger receivers need to prove they have the straight-line speed to threaten corners vertically. If Hill can run in the 4.5 range or better, he could end up separating himself from the rest of the “big” wide receiver pack.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defensive prospects in need of a strong Combine

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Defensive-prospects-in-need-of-a-strong-Combine.html

Quote:
DE Whitney Mercilus: Illinois (6-4, 265)
Physically he looks the part and has the natural talent to simply man handle college lineman. However, he's a raw kid who is stiff in the hips and doesn't have a great feel for the game when asked to find the football. He's got some upside, but his tightness and overall lack of natural feel for the game are two very big concerns of mine. Nevertheless, he’s got the ability to “wow” during workouts and could be one of the big winners to come out of Indy and set his draft stock soaring.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Potential Combine risers no one is talking about…

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFL-Combine-Sleepers.html

Quote:
DE Cam Johnson: Virginia (6-4, 270)
A solid college defensive end who has never been much of a sack artist but there are definitely some tools there. Showcases natural fluidity in his drop and in coverage and has the ability to mature into a more sudden pass rusher. Will get looks in both a 34 and 43 front and could be the Jabaal Sheard of the 2012 class.

Agreed! It's too bad wonderlic scores aren't disclosed as I'm certain there would be a correlation of some sorts with high scores and performance at certain positions (qb, O-Line specifically). There was a thread in the Draft Forum recently that studied 3/4 linebacker's combine numbers and how they predicted future success. http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=439180 Waldo did some study on this as well (link inside first link) for those interested. Very interesting stuff.

^^ Yeah, good stuff from both, guys.

Can't help but be disappointed by this first bit of news...

Blackmon to 'do it all' at Combine; Fleener won't

http://rob-rang.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/13682485/34914360

Quote:
While scouts will get some of their biggest questions answered about arguably the elite non-QB skill-position talent in the draft at the Combine, they'll have to wait until Stanford's March 22 Pro Day to see Coby Fleener, NFLDraftScout.com's top-rated senior TE, perform athletic drills. Considering that some guy named Luck is expected to throw that day as well as the presence of two first round caliber OL (OG DeCastro, OT Martin) also among those expected to be on hand for the workout, there should be plenty of decision-makers in Palo Alto for the workout. Ironically enough, Fleener suffered his ankle injury playing against Blackmon's Oklahoma State Cowboys January 3 in the Fiesta Bowl. The injury kept Fleener out of the Senior Bowl. According to a source close to the situation, Fleener has recovered suffiiciently from the injury but hasn't yet had an opportunity to prepare fully for the Combine-specific workouts. Though he won't be able to work out, Fleener will attend the Combine to participate in the medical testing and interview process.

Questions abound heading into NFL Scouting Combine

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8270649c/article/questions-abound-heading-into-nfl-scouting-combine

Quote:
Where are the pass-rushers?

The Giants' second Super Bowl triumph in five seasons will shine the spotlight on teams looking for explosive edge-rushers, something NY has by the bucketful. And that spotlight will show a pretty bare shelf when it comes to this draft class. "It's disappointing," the AFC scout of the class said. "What will happen is you'll have someone with prototype measurables have a good workout there (at the combine), and he'll get taken higher. This is a rough year for pass rushers." One name to keep an eye on in that regard is Whitney Mercilus, an athletic freak who declared for the draft after a breakout junior year and could be the second edge player selected behind Courtney Upshaw.

Is Alshon Jeffery in shape for the combine?

http://profootball.scout.com/2/1160642.html

Quote:
According to sources and a player who's been training with Jeffery near Tampa, Fla., the Gamecocks star wideout is actually in good shape. How fast he'll run the 40-yard dash remains unclear. "Oh yeah, Alshon's in good shape," said Bethune-Cookman OLB/DE Ryan Davis, who's been training with Jeffery in Florida. "He's looking very good out there. He's going to turn a lot of heads. He's a big receiver, but he's not fat. I laugh when I see that on TV. He's been smirking. I bet he runs a 4.5. He's way down in his weight. He's between 217 and 220 right now."

Top 10: Best bets to put on combine freak show

Quote:
4-Tommy Streeter, Miami, WR

After a few years of teasing 'Canes staff with his potential, the 6-5, 216-pound junior had a breakout season in 2011. Streeter opted to leave early after his one big year, and with his size and exceptional speed, he has the chance to shoot up draft board this week. Scouts don't expect to see a guy his height so fast, but remember he's been one of the fastest men in a very fast program from the day he arrived in Coral Gables. (Two other UM speeders, Lamar Miller and Travis Benjamin also could've made this list.) Those close to the UM program are expecting some big things this week from Streeter, who has a chance to shock scouts with just how fast he actually is. Last year's fastest man in Indy, DeMarcus VanDyke, a former Cane CB who got drafted by the Raiders after he blazed the fastest 40-time at the Combine, told me a few weeks back that Streeter could duplicate his showing this year.

2012 Scouting Combine preview

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/tony_pauline/02/22/2012.scouting.combine.preview/index.html?eref=writers

Quote:
Marvin Jones, WR, California -- Jones was cast as a possession wideout with minimal upside entering the 2011 campaign. He topped off a tremendous season by impressing NFL decision-makers at the Senior Bowl. The question remains: How fast is Jones? If he matches his 40 times in recent workouts (low 4.4s), Jones will be viewed in a whole new light and could jump into the second round.

Quote:
Melvin Ingram, DE-OLB, South Carolina -- Ingram has been lightning fast in recent workouts leading up to the Combine. At 275 pounds, he's expected to run under 4.7 seconds in the 40. If he does, Ingram will move into the draft's first dozen choices.

Under radar underclassmen set to light up combine

http://rob-rang.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/13682485/34945102

Quote:
WR Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech: Hill reminds me a lot of former Georgia Tech standout Demaryius Thomas for his size, straight-line speed and big play ability. NFLDraftScout.com is currently estimating Hill as being able to run the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds. I think he'll shave a tenth off that time, as well as impress in leaping drills. He's undeniably raw but don't be surprised if a strong showing in Indianapolis pushes Hill into the second round.

Knee scope will sideline RB Richardson at Combine

Quote:
Though Richardson won't be able to participate in the athletic drills at the Combine, according to the report, he is expected to be able to participate in Alabama's March 7 Pro Day. Assuming that team doctors don't find reason to believe that Richardson will be troubled by the knee in the future, his stock isn't likely to be impacted, according to a league source who shared his thoughts under the condition of anonymity.

http://www.draftinsider.net/blog/?p=6131

Quote:
- I am also hearing Michael Floyd looks good and will run a forty time faster than anyone presently predicts. The good news is Floyd is healthy from the injuries which kept him from attending the Senior Bowl. The better news is he plans on running at the combine, barring any last week tweaks.

- Mike Adams combined terrific play during the Senior Bowl with solid interviews all week. Adams evidently answered all questions the scouts had about any perceived character issues. The former Buckeye continues to climb draft boards.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Senior-Bowl-talent-to-watch-at-the-NFL-Combine.html

Senior Bowl talent to watch at the NFL Combine

Quote:
Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State: Adams is being targeted as a rookie that can play on the right side, but I thought he displayed good enough technique to possibly be looked as a potential LT during his career. Now, we get to see what type of athlete he is and how he matches up against USC's Matt Kalil and Iowa's Riley Reiff.

Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State: A lot of positives on Quick when talking to scouts after practice sessions. He displayed good body control, adjusted to the football and has size (6-3, 220) at the WR position. However, no different than a top prospect like Justin Blackmon, the league wants to see Quick run. His 40-time will impact his stock.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
Rising LB to miss combine with illness

Utah State LB Bobby Wagner, one of the rising stars in the 2012 draft class, will not participate in this week’s scouting combine in Indianapolis after being hospitalized earlier in the week with pneumonia. Wagner reportedly is feeling better but still likely won’t be released from the hospital until the weekend at the earliest and won’t travel to Indianapolis. It’s also still up in the air whether Wagner will be able to participate in Utah State’s pro day on March 8. If not he will almost certainly schedule a private workout later in March or early April. After a very strong Senior Bowl week, Wagner appears to have moved into the mid-to-late second round range.

Is it wrong that I'm praying for a 4.5 out of Quick to ensure that he's there at our 2nd rounder? Dude is gonna be a monster on jump balls in the red zone, methinks...

I don't think he runs a sub 4.5... but I hesitate to make predictions, really. I see Quick as more of a 3rd rd option, but if SF snags him earlier, guess I will smile with trust in that decision. I'm sure they do far more homework than I.

Would really like to have seen Fleener run his 40 on the same track, under the same conditions, and with the same timing method as the other guys.
