I'm saying this because I'm praying that he doesn't go to the Cards. They'd be a huge contender if he goes there and is healthy. |
I'd put my money on the Cardinals or the Chiefs as those heavily pursuing Manning.
Lets go Chiefs! Get you a QB! _________________

Man, this could be a tough decision. I disagree that Smith can't get us to a Superbowl, but think that Manning would be more likely to (EDIT: in the short term; no one knows how good/bad Smith will be or when he will falter/improve). That said, who knows how fragile he is at this point? Even if he can take a hit, he probably won't play too many more seasons. Manning is definitely the better qb, but Smith is younger (on a young team) and much less banged up at this point. Tough call... I wouldn't consider it much until we all know more about his health.[/i] _________________

Also, I agree with this and hope like heck he doesn't land in Arizona! _________________

I think Manning goes to Miami.. I would love it if he was a Chief though, and the more I think about it it makes sense. Crennel is obviously a defensive guy, so Manning could run his offense. There are some great weapons on place already, if Wayne came with they'd have a scary offense to go along with a very good young defense.
I know id go to a lot more Chiefs games this year. _________________

I'd rather us sign Manning than bring back Alex. I know it's both the unpopular and improbable (<1% chance) opinion around here, but I think it'd be the right one. I think Peyton would be much more likely to get us over the hump in the immediate (2-3 years) future, and then we could insert CK as we ease Peyton into retirement.
I still think Peyton goes to Washington. They might want RGIII, but I think they'll take Peyton if they can get him. Flynn to Miami, RGIII to Cleveland. _________________

part of me wishes this was Alex's 2nd year under Harbaugh so we get a more clear picture of what Alex can do in this system
but if we did get Peyton somehow and gave up on Alex, would be nice if we signed Reggie Wayne too _________________

Nothing to see here except thinly veiled barbs at a certain 49er...and he is a 9er until FA hits or he is resigned.

| Speaking as an outsider... I don't see why you guys wouldnt develope kaepernic and bring in Payton. Lets face it kaepernic could legitimately beat out Alex Smith anyway. If Manning came to the 49ers and wanted to play for them would management really. E a me to say no? And if he's not healthy you still have a young qb that is prolly better than Smith anyways. |

It's more a matter of a couple things...
1. First and foremost, Harbaugh runs the offense... runs the show. Manning's gonna insist on going to a team where he gets his way and runs things as he wants. That's not gonna work.. at all... for Harbaugh. Manning doesn't really fit in the athleticism Jim demands anyway. I'd be terrified for Manning behind our OL (top 10 in QB hits allowed)
2. Harbaugh has pretty well committed himself to Alex.. at least for another season. He loves him, respects him, and isn't gonna stab him in the back. (the only thing that could change this is Alex getting overly greedy on his contract... and that's just not Alex) _________________

Based on what exactly? There certainly isn't any evidence to base that on. All indications on the field and comments from coaches/staff say otherwise.
I like Manning, but he is too risky. We'd have to wonder each time he is hit "is this the end of his career?". No thank you. _________________

| Worth the risk. You guys won despite Alex Smith, he's a bottom half NFL starting qb, that is going to want to get paid like a top 10 qb. Can you really argue kaepernicks upside compared to smiths? You guys liked him enough to take him high in the 2nd round and I'm not sure the love affair for Alex Smith that this forum has. He's very average and has proved that throughout his career. |

You talk as if "upside" was guaranteed. CK is young and will have to make plenty of mistakes before he reaches whatever ceiling he has. Those are the mistakes Alex didn't make and allowed us to make the playoffs. We didn't make the playoffs "despite" Alex Smith. He was one of the reasons we made it. _________________

In reality, Alex's career has just begun. Before 2011, it was mostly a nightmare for him as well as fans. Now how 'bout you just move on with that schtick of yours? _________________
