Theres absolutely no reason to bring Leonhard back. NONE. Landry and anyone other then Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard would make me happy. _________________

I really want Nelson the most, I wouldn't mind paying for him. He is better than Landry in coverage and doesn't have the injury concerns. _________________

Nelson wasnt very good before last year, and struggled down the stretch. Landry is just better in general when hes on the field. Nelson isnt worth more then 4 million a year and Landry isnt worth more then 5 due to his injuries.
Our best bet is Brandon Meriweather and one of those two since Meriweather wont command much at all and could get paired with either of them.
I really want two safeties in FA. We already have ESmith and then we draft a guy who we can develop. Automatically great depth at S.
Nelsons a solid safety but we should by no means overpay for him. _________________

Nelson gives us a rangy safety. Something we haven't had since Rex has been here. Plus I can use my ERASER sig I made when he was a prospect. I remember I was in love with him. He didn't pan out but he is what we need. _________________

I remember that sig lol. If we can somehow add Nelson and maybe Meriweather too that would be amazing. However, I just think with how watered down the safety market is, and with how weak the draft is for them, we are going to have to overpay for one, and if we overpay for anyone I rather it be Nelson. Seems like everyone is looking for a safety these days. _________________

Meriweather is a thug, an ex-Pat and a very overrated player. No thanks.
We can easilyyyy find a SS in the draft. _________________

Agreed. Either Nelson or Landry (preferably the former imo) + a rook =win. Simple as that. |

LaRon Landry is a prototypical strong safety. He'd be an upgrade on Leonhard and Smith certainly but also is a risk due to injury issues.
Reggie Nelson is probably the best option in terms of a free safety, but by far a slam dunk. Wouldn't be a bad signing at a minimal price but certainly not worth shelling out larger amounts in a bidding war.
I think both players have upside that would make them risks worth taking at a certain value. And the market in general just isn't there so a calculated risk may be the best the Jets can do. |

Yeah Nelson is the best FS , and Landry is the best SS.
The only thing I wonder about Nelson is was last year a fluke? What if we sign him and he starts to play like his old self? He wasn't good through out the whole year. I like him, and I hope thats not the case.
A lot of people worried about Landry's injury. But we just signed BT back who also had a achillies injury. So I don't think that the jets are to worried about the last injury like most people are.
I would really like to see us sign both. _________________

At this point Id like us to just sign one. We had interest in lots of players but it doesnt seem as though were going to be very aggressive. _________________

Thats true. I wonder if his brother Dawan Landry is telling Laron positive things about Rex. A little help with recruiting won't hurt. _________________

Right now I'm keeping my eye on these safeties,
LaRon Landry - depending on his asking price, he's my #1 (assuming it's less than Nelson's). He needs to check out medically, but I would still try and nab him even if we needed to take it easy on him. If the Jets want to make a true statement, sign both.
Reggie Nelson - he's not the best safety out there, but he's good. Like any other player he has flaw, but maybe Rex and an elite secondary can help him iron them out. To say the least he's an explosive, ball hawking safety that will create turnovers at the very least.
Richard Marshall - I would go crazy if we landed this guy, however I feel this is unlikely to happen. There's more value and money at corner and with teams desperate for them, I think Marshall will sign somewhere as a corner. He had a terrific 2011 season playing in all types of roles including special teams, nickel & dime back, and on the outside, but really excelled as a cover safety when Rhodes went down. He's known to be a very solid tackler and showed he's a good safety with quality snaps in 2011. He's my top "sleeper" pick on the market.
Reggie Smith - Smith kind of seems like the Josh Morgan of this year, but for safeties. Smith is a long player that's gushing with talent and just ran into an unfortunate opportunity with SF. Going into training camp Smith was labelled the starter and by all accounts was doing very well until he tore his meniscus. Out goes Smith, in comes Goldson (signed a 1 year deal). He was drafted in 2008, turned CB-to-S in 2009, and in 2010 he looked like he would be an asset after starting weeks 11-16 (after the Taylor Mays experiment) and performing very well (48.1 completion % against him, 66.1 QB rating). He's only 25 years old and his arrow is still pointing up, so I would be really happy if the Jets were to sign say LaRon Landry paired with Smith, who is more of a natural cover safety.
Brandon Meriweather - the one thing you can say about him is he has the talent, but sometimes you question what's going on up there. If we paired him with one of the above I'd be happy, but he can't be our lone safety signing.
Ryan Mundy - Honestly don't know much about him, but I do know he's a restricted free agent and would cost us a 6th round pick. He's big, young, and has learned from the best so I wouldn't mind taking a flier on him. _________________

I would like any of the Reggies, didn't really know much about Smith but he could be promising for us plus not really be too expensive. _________________

See this is what i am thinking. Mundy and Smith have been back ups to start their careers. We can offer a chance to start and get them kinda on the cheap. Zbi would be a good fit if his concussions aren't an issue because he knows the system. Dahl played pretty well with the Rams. Bullitt would be more of a prove it deal and Sean Jones has some starting experience. I really like Smith because he was a corner in college and should be able to cover better than the guys we have now. Merriweather is a head case and is really a garbage player. We all were talking crap about him months ago when he got cut. I cant see how that perception has change. I like Landry but unlike BT he opted not to get surgery. His health would be a huge question mark. As discussed Nelsen has always had issues and was only able to string together 3/4 of a good season. Mundy played behind Ryan Clark and Troy P. Smith played behind Whitner and Gholdson. I personally believe they both have talent. _________________
