Offense vs Defense

Please divide your level of importance up between

offense and defense up to 100%

I think because teams rely heavily on help defense from all starting 5 (Team defense)

but each individual needs to be good defensively to have good team defense

So I will go

60%

40%

Most coaches would seem to disagree.

Plenty of starters/high minute guys that are all offense no defense.

Not so much in reverse except for some big guys.

For every starter/high minute guy that is all offense no defense I bet you can find a guy that is all defense no offense. I'll admit that individually I'd rather have an amazing offensive player with no D (a Shaq w/out D) than an amazing defensive player with no O (Dikembe), but as a team I'd want equal emphasis on offense and defense from the players because you simply cannot win without both.

What are we talking here?

Talent wise or just importance?

I value defense a lot in judging a players.

But as far as talent wise (this scenario is pretty much impossible, if you're talented offensively, you have more than enough to contribute defensively....unless you're steve nash of course) give me 99% offense, 1% defense.

Most players need talent to perform offensively. Maybe a bout 30 to 40 % of offense is dependent on effort & IQ [the will to drive, to fight for position, to fill the lanes, to make those rim runs, to turn down jump shots, etc] the rest is physical talent or skill (footspeed, strength, handles, shooting, finishing ability, etc).

Now defense is 80% effort & IQ, maybe more.

I think an awesome example is Dirk, obviously an offensive beast.....and it was presumed that he couldn't play D because he was slow, etc.....but over the years you can see Dirk put more of an emphasis on it and is now respectable.

Bosh too. He was pretty poor in all faucets regarding defense, now he's one of the top 10-15 defending bigs (starters at least).

On a team scale in terms of importance defense is about 75%, offense 25%.

From a team perspective, the top 10 defensive teams per year have been more successful than the top 10 offensive teams, so defense is probably more important to success than offense (again, this is from a team perspective).

Comparing the odds of winning a ring between Off/Def
----------------------------------------------------
Off Def p(C) |Off Def p(C)
0.0 0.0 0.4% |0.0 0.0 0.4%
1.0 0.0 0.7% |0.0 -1.0 0.7%
2.0 0.0 1.1% |0.0 -2.0 1.3%
3.0 0.0 1.9% |0.0 -3.0 2.4%
4.0 0.0 3.1% |0.0 -4.0 4.3%
5.0 0.0 5.2% |0.0 -5.0 7.6%
6.0 0.0 8.5% |0.0 -6.0 13.2%
7.0 0.0 13.7% |0.0 -7.0 22.0%
8.0 0.0 21.2% |0.0 -8.0 34.2%
9.0 0.0 31.4% |0.0 -9.0 49.0%
10.0 0.0 43.8% |0.0 -10.0 63.9%

The left side represents an offensive team that is average defensively (or below that, I can't remember), and the right side represents a defensive team that is average offensively (or below that). Negative numbers for the defense is a good thing, just in case anyone was confused.
