I'm still 100% behind Ponder. He showed a lot of promise last season, despite playing with 1 good WR and an average TE, not to mention a pretty bad offensive line.

I'm also a big time believer in Bill Musgrave's ability to develop QB's.

I do like Christian Ponder. He seems like a good, personable young man. I didn't get to see too many games last year, and even if I had, I wouldn't be making any proclamations about him yet anyway. It's far too early - especially when you consider he came in as a rookie with no real offseason to get prepared.

The only thing I don't like is the way it looked like such a panic move when we drafted him at #12. Can't blame him for that though.

Hopefully he will make some positive strides this year and start feeling more and more comfortable out there. A couple decent receivers to play with Percy and some O-line reinforcement should help a lot too. Hopefully we get both of these things.

I don't expect a great season for CP or for the Vikings next year. I predicted a Top 5 pick in the draft going into last year, and that proved to be right. I still think we will be in the Top 10 next year. Still, if we show progress, that's about all we can and should expect at this point in our rebuilding.

One final thing. If Peyton Manning ends up in Denver, maybe we can pick up another terrific QB prospect who can battle Ponder for the starting job. Wink

Brady Quinn signed with the Chiefs.

If you want to run the Wing-T, then ok.

Heaven forbid that a rookie QB without a full offseason and turnstiles along the offensive line didn't take us to the Super Bowl in the toughest division in football. I've said it many, many times, I think Ponder was a severe reach at #12 overall, but I'm not going to throw the towel in on him after 10 games, unlike some of our armchair experts.

Tebow is a gimmick. Good teams can stop him, will stop him, and have stopped him. You give Timmy our defense and see if he sniffs the playoffs. Not a chance.

and your the expert on ponder and I bet people would have said the same thing about the Broncos defense when they were 1-4. Also nobody expected him to get to the SB just to play well and not get outplayed by joe webb in a short amount of games. Your saying give ponder time, give tebow time as well. Also I rather give joe webb a shot than christian ponder. We don't know if he is a gimmick or not but I'll take the guy who got to the playoffs.

How can say that about Ponder? The O-line sucked last. We only have 1 decent WR in Harvin. And you want to give up on him?

Anyone that thinks Joe Webb is a starting QB in this league has no clue about the game of football. NONE!!!!

That's me. Well, I mean, I think Webb is a better option than Ponder and Sage to be a starting QB for the Vikes. Ponder could be a mediocre starting QB for a team like the Jets and could rack up a few wildcard game losses.

Ponder = low ceiling, even with a competent FO
Webb = WOW factor, a small gamble with tons of raw potential.

This ^ is getting a bit off topic, don't you think?

I guess your expectation for Ponder is that he will not be benched.

That is based on your 'competent FO' remark.

Staying on topic, my expectations are somewhat in line with the draft analysts at the time of the 2011 draft, who seemed to think the Vikings needed to draft a QB to replace Webb. Thus, the QB in which the Vikings invested a #12 draft pick will hopefully develop according to plan, stumbling along the way, but making progress in a years where he has a full off season to train and learn, and new help on the OL and WR corps.

It's amazing that 6 games gives you everything you need to know about a guy and what kind of QB he is going to be in the future.

Except that almost all of the top Draft analysts thought that Ponder was a 2nd or 3rd Round talent and that taking him 12th overall was a huge reach.

The fact of the matter is that Ponder did absolutely nothing last year to prove his critics wrong, while Joe Webb showed that the 2010 win against the Eagles wasn't a fluke.

Toward the top of the pack in red zone efficiency and 3rd down conversion is 'nothing'? I think it's something. Something to build upon, after a rookie year without much training camp and a bad OL.
