Here's an interesting way to start your Sunday morning: 49ers free-agent QB Alex Smith is visiting today with the Miami Dolphins.

The 49ers are offering Smith a three-year, $24 million deal, Smith so far isn't accepting it.

The Dolphins are looking at both Smith and Matt Flynn as potential starters for next season.

Smith is also considering changing agents, he is currently represented by Tom Condon.

***Update***
Quote:
According to a source familiar with Smith's itinerary, the free-agent quarterback also plans to visit the Seattle Seahawks this week.

that has been my biggest fear since this Manning bs started... I will go insane if we lose both.. We'd likely go into next season with Josh Johnson or Kaepernick as the QB.. Mad

Marshall Faulk quoted Manning by saying he would like to stay out of the NFC because of his BROTHER ELI. You think he want's to face him for the last 2-3years of his career?

If the 49ers lose out on Manning, Harbaugh created a huge problem that wasn't needed because now Smith would have them by the b#lls financially. What if neither sign with 49ers? They now go from favorites to questionable.

The fact the 49ers are lowballing Alex Smith makes it even worse. Not to mention while scrubs like Kerry Collins and Matt Cassell were/are averaging 10++ million a year. The starting point for even a game-manager of Smith's quality is 10-12 million a year or more.

Manning also wants to win. He's got a helluva better chance doing that in SF than Denver or Tennesee.

"Would like" to stay out of the NFC and "Will not play" in the NFC are two very, very different things.

If Peyton thinks San Francisco is his best shot to win, I don't doubt he goes there.

If Manning wants to win, which ive heard he does, no disrespect to Denver or Tennesse he should choose San Fran in an Instant with that D, he could legitamatly win a SB. That should be what matters most

The 49ers could still sign Flynn if they lose on Manning and Smith.

Josh Johnson is much more likely. Flynn hasn't proven anything, and would come at a much higher price.. plus, Harbaugh was Johnson's coach at San Diego State, and we drafted Colin Kaepernick (traded up) in the 2nd last year... I'd imagine those two would battle it out in camp.

Colin Kaepernick looks like the biggest waste of a draft pick in a long while. The desperation of needing a QB in the lockout affected season has really shown.

They traded up a long way to get to the top part of the 2nd round to draft him and he isn't even being mentioned as a possibility to get the starters job after a year of sitting.

I thought the idea of drafting him was for him to sit for a year then become a decent starter, but for now it seems like SF is concentrating on Manning and then Smith while Kaep becomes the forgotten man.

I really don't see us losing out on both Manning and Alex. Alex is smart. He knows he will be facing an enormous uphill battle if he has to go into Miami, learn yet another offense, and he has no weapons at receiver now that Marshall is out of town. All Alex can do now is wait. If Manning picks Tenn or Denver, then we will sign Alex, no doubt in my mind.

It was a must, and considering the value we got from our other picks (DROY candidate Aldon Smith, starting CB Chris Culliver in the 3rd, Kendall Hunter in the 4th, starting FB Bruce Miller in the 7th) it's not a big deal.

the plan (at least i'm assuming) before Manning was sign Smith to a 3 year deal (really a 1 or 2 yr) and make him prove he's a franchise QB.. if not, throw Kaep in there.

and if we do sign Manning, Kaep will be the future once PM retires.

oh, and we only gave up one of our 4ths and 5ths to move up.
