Why would anyone offer Alex Smith a contract? He just is not very good...at all. Mind boggling for me as to why Miami would offer him that type of contract.

Agreed.

I don't know why MIA wants Smith. He's not much of an upgrade over Moore, if at all. Might as well roll with him or draft someone.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah,ahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...........
.............hahaha.......hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....ha..hahaha.if you believe the bolder you really don't know anything about football. I am neither a huge Smith supporter or hater, but even the most critical of him (that know anything about the game of football, or the qb position) would say he is far better than Moore.

Moore played well and Smith was on a far better overall team with much better coaching, too.

Smith is a game manager and nothing special. He's not much better than Moore. You're acting like I just said Peyton isn't a big upgrade over Smith.
That would warrant the same reaction. Like I said I am notSmiths biggest fan, but he was an average to above average starting QB last season. I wouldn't be thrilled to have Moore as a backup. Maybe I just think less of moore than most, but he doesn't have a good football mind IMO. Put him in Smiths situation from last season and I think the Niners would have been around 8-8. 5 wins is a pretty big drop off for a one player change to a roster.

Shocked

Smith was a game manager. Any average QB put in that situation would have them at at least 12 wins with how good that running game and defense was.

A game manager with 6 4th qtr comebacks.

It is possible to be a game manager and still lead 4th quarter comebacks. Hes a poor man's Eli Manning.

Rolling Eyes

???

This is a compliment for Manning. There is nothing wrong with being a game-manager QB.

smith put up better stats last year with much less talent around him

Smith may have had less talent at the WR position, but San Fran has Miami beat regarding Running Game, TEs, and outside of the Dolphins having Jake Long, the rest of the 9ers O-Line IMO is better than Miamis.. on top of Smith having one of the better defenses to help protect their leads, ect.. ect.

for most of the year, vernon davis and delanie walker were invisible in the passing game. vernon especially because he couldn't get the hang of the offense and could not get open. niners did have a better run game, but matt moore had better receivers by far. and he had a true #1 go to guy in brandon marshall

Alex Smith should absolutely get an offer on par with Matt Cassell's ten million. With Alex Smith you know he can run any system. He's already had like 30 something coordinators in his career. If he actually ever finds a stable place to play I could see Alex Smith sneaking right into the top 5 quarterback talks.

Just because Smith has so much exposure to so many systems, doesnt mean he can actually run them effectively. He has actually ran more systems he has been apart of poorly, so i am not sure that is a strong argument for him.

However, If Kolb and Cassel can get what they got, I dont see why Smith cant.

And how effectively has he run those other systems?

Alex Smith probably cost 30 offensive coordinators their jobs.

Top 5? oh geeeeeeez

I'd say he's pretty much right around the middle. Smith is a good game manager and an overall above average QB. That is not a knock on him at all.

Still, I don't think he's the long term answer at all.

I really feel bad for Alex. He steps it up in a new system, and then he has to go from the Niners to the Fins. Wow! That organization is a joke. No coaches or players want to be there. Then they trade away the one good wr they had. Alex is doomed again from the start.

Considering the 49ers could have cut him last offseason and no-one would have blinked an eye lid, I don't see why they owe Alex anything.

He shouldn't have balked at the $7m a year offer.

Agreed... Alex Smith really is a product of John Harbaugh's system, IMO. I'm not confident Alex could succeed here in Miami, but I still think he's a slight improvement over Moore, at least he's a game manager that won't put our defense in bad situations.

If Smith leaves SF and Peyton goes elsewhere, I honestly think Colin Kaepernick will be able to run the system with efficiency.
