An interesting story/career to follow. Can't say I expect him to make the roster though. _________________

I'm quietly confident he'll make the team.
He put on a sack drill at 5-tech in camp. _________________

So you think he'll get his shot at DE? |

So you think he'll get his shot at DE? | I dunno. Don't most 3-4 5-techs play UT in the even front? _________________

You've got me confused. 5 tech is the outside shoulder of an OT. Not sure how that translates into 4-3 DT skills. |

Like Richard Seymour, Tyson Jackson, Luis Castillo etc? _________________

It can be. The tech # corresponds to where the D lineman lines up from inside out. On the center is 0, guard is 2, tackle is 4 and the gaps are odd #'s.
So, common for a DE to line up as a 5 or 4(on the tackle). 0/1 describes spots you'll put a NT, on the center or between the center and guard.
Anyway, it's just an old numbering system thats been around since Noah was a pup. |

Garland was listed as 6-5, 275 (288 at Combine in 2010) when McDaniels brought him in. And then he had to lose weight when he was trying to become a pilot. It was my understanding that his height precluded him being a pilot. In any case, I imagine he could put weight on, but at 275, I don't see him as a DT. He was a better than average player in college, and coming from a military background, you know he will have discipline and work his butt off. I have him being at least a Practice Squad member if he doesn't make it to the roster.
I posted his 2010 Combine numbers a few weeks ago, and they compare favorably with this years DTs, and toward the bottom of this years DEs.
Here they are again: He was 6-5, 288 lbs.
40 yard dash: 5.07
20 yard dash: 2.89
10 yard dash: 1.76
Bench Press: 18 (he has long arms)
Vertical Jump: 35!!!
Broad Jump: 9' 4"
20 yard shuttle: 4.47
3-cone drill: 7.14
Not bad at all. I have have high hopes for the guy. |

5-tech just means 5-technique.
The "technique" part is wherever the defensive lineman lines up. As you said the 5-technique lines up inside shoulder of the tackle. So pretty much he puts his cap on the tackles inside shoulder. 3-technique is splitting OG and C, 7-technique is outside shoulder of tackle, and the "wide-9" or 9-technique that DET and PHI run, the DE will lineup a full body outside the OT.
Therefore paul-mac, You are not wrong to say the 5-tech is not the 3-4 DE because thats where most 3-4 DE's lineup. _________________

He's a nice story but honestly I do not see how he makes the team. I'll be rooting for him to do so, but I just don't see it. _________________ big_palooka:

And yet another one that is also called "Football 101" that is different. Maybe we need to get all the "Football 101" writers together for a "Football 101" class.

How many years does he have off the field? Two? That will be the biggest obstacle. Sure he's in shape, but his football skills are probably very rusty, and who knows if he will be able to play catch up from a football skills standpoint and still make the team. Hope he does though. _________________

| I'm not holding my breathe, but wouldn't it be nice if Garland turns into a versatile DL that can play some end and bump inside. IIRC, he is a decent athlete, don't know how big he is now though. |
