Am I the only one who really hates this new draft format? First round on Thursday night. Second and Third rounds on Friday and 4-7 on Saturday.
There isn't a feeling of continuity and it is too disjointed.
I remember waking up on Saturday mornings and looking forward to the whole day of draft coverage. And then having it close out on Sunday.

This whole idea of having it in prime time is just lame. And this is one of the things I truly despise about Goodell. The man is all about money. While money is critical, it should not always hold dominion over tradition and common sense.

They should make it the best of both worlds, primetime draft, but not having the first round on a working night.

My ideal scenario:

Friday, 8pm EST: round 1
Saturday, 7pm EST: rounds 2 and 3
Sunday, noon EST: Rounds 4 to 7

This would be better than what we presently have. My question is, what was wrong with the old format?
Have rounds 1-3 on Saturday and then 4-7 on Sunday.
I like having the pleasure of having more than 1 round on opening day.

I prefer the first round to be isolated to be honest. The first round is as talked about as the rest of the entire draft.

As a fan I prefer to have the night to regroup, digest the first round and re-consider my plans for the remainder of the draft.

I think if I was a GM I'd prefer a standalone first round as well.

Interesting that everyone always talks about 33 being a prime spot for trades, never traded since the new format began.

I for one don't mind the new format. I like having the first round only on the first day that way so teams can set up their new big board excluding the first round picks. This way I think each team is more prepared and it's not as much of a panic if they're trying to trade up, see who's there still in the 2nd, etc. Just my 2 cents though.

Like last year, this year's draft format will have ex-players announce the 2nd round picks.

Terrell Davis will announce the Bronco's selection.

I don't know what happens if a team gets multiple 2nd round picks (2 ex-players? or double shift?) or trades their pick.

It's because the draft is a HUGE money-maker for the NFL and their broadcast partners, ESPN and NFLN. Putting it in prime time and spread out over three days means higher TV ratings and thus more money. I would wager that tomorrow night's first round gets better ratings than any non-football, non-championship sports event from now until August. ESPN will probably get a 6.5 to 8.0 demo rating and NFLN about half that for the first round tomorrow evening.

I agree with you, as a diehard draftnik I liked the old format, but NFL is a business.

I actually like having it spread out like this but I would prefer it to start on Friday...

I liked having first round isolated. Go through that at night then the next day get more time to look over the 2nd round guys and see who fell. I'd prefer it to be Friday through sunday. But Friday is usually the worst weekday for Tv so it's understandable.

Happened to us last year,

Shannon Sharpe announced Rahim Moore, then a contest winning fan announced Franklin.
