With the 220th Overall Pick in the 2012 NFL Draft…The Chicago Bears Select…

CB…Greg McCoy…TCU…

Personal Information…

Quote:
Mother is Neancia McCoy ... a communications major ... attended the same high school as former TCU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Davey O'Brien ... received 4-A Most Valuable Player honors as a senior ... was also first-team all-area at wide receiver ... totaled 37 receptions for 834 yards and 10 touchdowns ... ranked 37th on SportsDay's Area Top 100 ... named Woodrow Wilson's team MVP ... first-team all-district at defensive back his junior year and a second-team selection at wide receiver ... recorded three interceptions and scored over 10 touchdowns.

Workout Numbers...

Height: 5-9'6”
Weight: 181lbs
40 Yard Dash: 4.42
20 Yard Dash: 2.51
10 Yard Dash: 1.50
Bench Press Reps: 12
Vertical Jump: 38”
Broad Jump: 10-0”
20 Yard Shuttle: 4.19
3 Cone Drill: 6.62

The Scouts Take…

Quote:
Decent size for a nickle cornerback at the next level... Plays better in off coverage, which allows him to read and react... When he sees the play develop, he has a better ability to read routes and make plays... Takes good angles to the football when reading the football... Is quick in short areas and is able to make plays on the ball... Looks better on the inside of the formation, he has the ability to play man coverage in close quarters... His real value lies in his kick return abilities, ranked sixth in the nation with a 30.6 average per return in 2011, including two touchdowns; was named the Mountain West Conference's special teams player of the year and selected to the All-American team as a return specialist by CBS and Yahoo!... Recorded a second quarter interception in the Poinsettia Bowl and was named defensive player of the game as TCU came back to beat Louisiana Tech.

Negatives -- His size will come into question, especially when it comes to bigger wide receivers... In coverage, has a hard time flipping his hips and getting vertical with the man he is covering... Has good speed, but doesn't have that extra gear to get on top of receivers... Against faster competition, he will have to improve his technique or he will be beaten over the top with ease... Allows receivers get inside and has trouble keeping up with them after the snap of the ball... Has a hard time setting the edge in run support, and can be moved off his spot at will... His tackling is below average due to lack of strength... Was solid as the collegiate level, but bigger and faster players might prove too much in the NFL... Has to prove that he can contribute in the secondary because he won't last long at the next level as just a return specialist.

Career Highlights...

Career Stats...

2007…1 tackle
2008…8 tackles…1 INT
2009…22 tackles…4 PBUs…2 INTs
2010…30 tackles…6 PBUs…2 INTs
2011…32 tackles…7 PBUs…2 INTs

More importantly he has a career kick-off return average of over 33 yards.

My Take...

Seems like a KR more than a CB...very special teams heavy draft...which is a good thing when you think about it as it means our roster was in pretty good shape even before the draft.

It appears we are trying to fix the secondary and find some serious value picks.

McCoy looks like another CB with the physical tools that warrant development.

My guess is that he ends up being hidden on the IR.

There's a bodybuilder with the same name, you'll see when you search youtube for this kid. So now we have two players with the same names as bodybuilders. Nice.

I know nothing about this guy...but looks like he has nice speed.

According to the couple of scouting reports I read, he has some nice speed and was a dynamic kick returner (averaged around 35 yds/return).

I don't see either of the last 2 picks even making the roster. Would have much rather liked to see a DT or LB drafted in the 6th and 7th.

I don't think Wilhite is necessarily a lock to make the roster. Or Hayden, to a lesser extent. Both low-risk one-year deals.

Unfortunately, the new rookie pay scale is kind of eliminating the need for Cliff Stein. It really isn't exceedingly difficult to sign guys to deals because it is much more set in stone. I would expect a majority of rooks to be signed within the next 2-3 weeks.

Lol the need for someone as good as Cliff Stein is not eliminated. He still signs free agents and restructures people to fit the the cap and extends players.

In the arena that he was referring to (signing draft picks) his role is most certainly reduced by the rookie wage scale.

He handles all the contract and legal stuff for the Bears and is among the best in the league. The rookie wage scale just makes it so he can sign rookies quicker. He's still vitally important as always. Going back and forth on the total amount of the contract is only a small part of the numbers and legal stuff with contracts.
