Nothing against McShay/Kiper, but if the Packer coaching staff watched all his game film from his college career----which is customary when they're thinking of drafting a player----and concluded he's a good tackler then that's good enough for me. Maybe he showed bad form a couple of times....it happens.

I'd be interested in knowing who you think the starter opposite of Burnett is going to be. Peprah? Levine? Jennings? Woodson?
Burnett started as a rookie. Collins started as a rookie. So in Thompson's tenure, we've drafted a small handful of safeties and two of them started as rookies. |

I don't believe Maine football games were actually televised. Only Maine hockey is.

My guess, unless Hayward/House completely stand out in training camp, is the starter will be Peprah.

| You don't even want to go there having to start McMillan this year. Safety is a very difficult position in the NFL so he needs to be developed. I suspect MD Jennigns and Anthony Levine will both be ahead of Jennings in being ready this year, but only one of them will make the final roster. I think we will see Peprah with Woodson palying safety in certain formations. Capers does such weird things I see numerous combinations because of the added depth the Packers defense has now. More physical and talented is what this group will strive for and it may happen even without Nick Collins. |

19 different safeties and McMillian isn't on the list...bet Ebner and Tavon Wilson wasn't on the list either. I reckon scouts were trolling McGinn! 
Yet somehow teams heard of/thought enough of him to be invited to the combine.
I'm sure he wasn't as obsure as we think.
I have a feeling that we might very well move on from Peprah and give opportunities to players with higher upside in Levine and MD. Of course McMillian will be in the mix. Peprah isn't meant to be a starter and I think based on after last season we should give other players every opportunity to take the starting spot.

People seem to forget that when we had a smidgeon of pass rush the year we won the Super Bowl, Charlie Peprah was actually a very pleasant surprise replacing Burnett. I like Jennings, Levine and JM, but Pep is going to start at safety to open up the season, it will be up to him how long he keeps it, but Pep has done some good things for us.

You don't need elite safeties or even corners to win the Superbowl. You need an elite pass rush. Everything after that takes care of itself.

While I agree with both of those ^^ Nick Collins gave our defense something that a great pass rush cannot replace. I do think our pass D will be better next year with the (hopefully) increased pass rush, but with the loss of Collins and Woodson's looming departure, we certainly still have holes to fill.

I'd have to imagine that Charlie Peprah is the favorite much to the dismay of Packer fans. He's got the inside route with his veteran experience and I expect him to be the starting SS unless one of the younger safety explodes in camp.

In that video McShay says he saw this guy as an UFA because he saw THREE tapes on the guy and didn't see anything special about him. Is three tapes(film from 3 games I assume?) really enough to come to that sort of conclusion on the guy? |

It was a combination of an actual pass rush and playing next to an All Pro. Easier to cover up Peprah's deficiencies when you have a safety with that much range and football IQ. Burnett is a good player but Nick Collins was at the very least a top 3 safety in the league.

Kiper said he loved him and it was a good pick, so it just shows you how much people's opinions can vary in the draft process.

Very good point. A great pass rush can hide the issues in a porous secondary. Just look at the Vikings from a few years ago. The problem is I don't want to pin my hopes on a productive secondary with the question marks regarding our front seven.

Look at the Giants too. I wouldn't say they have an exceptional secondary, there D-Line is just straight nasty.
If I was a GM, and I had my franchise QB, all I would draft is D-Line and pass rushers in the first round.
