Raymond has to be more aggressive and he would really improve his game

agreed, i blame it on rookie tentativeness. between Smith, Raymond and Blanton, i am confident that two starters will emerge.

I like Raymond too. Reminds me of Darren Sharper when he came into the league - a small-school guy that was tall, thin but fast.

The fact Raymond didn't drop as many picks as others was refreshing. . . lol. Sanford is a hitter, kinda like Bob Sanders was, but we'll see how things shake out.

I'm more curious about Joe Woods, the DB coach and what he'll do with these guys. Last year, the cupboard was bare . . . now he's got a whole slew of guys to work with. I suspect he better make things work well, or he won't make it to the bye week.

I thought Raymond looked really slow last year. One of my biggest problems with him.

If you look at nfldraftscout.com - Blanton is actually a little faster. He also did a 6.71 3 cone drill compared to Mistral's 7.14.

Raymond has competition ... if he's good he will get on the field, if not then someone else will

The secondary was so god awful last year that any sort of bright spot looked particularly impressive. He is too small to be as effective as I would like our Safeties to be but if we can get great play from Smith then we may be able to get by with giving up a bit at the other spot.

In the end i am not sure whether the problems in the secondary for years has been the front office not being able to accurately scout the secondary players we have gotten that has led to being well below average or whether we haven't had the right coaches to develop these players into quality NFL level talent.

One way or the other with the exception of Winfield and Sharper who were brought in through FA we have not had a quality top 10 player in the entire secondary for over a decade, maybe longer and even then it would probably be a player we got in FA. It seems, and I may be wrong, that we haven't drafted and developed a long term, quality secondary player since Dungy was the DC.

So, it my my hope and prayer that finally we might have reached a point where we turn the tide and finally reverse that trend and start to hit on these picks.

I know he dropped an easy interception in preseason too.

I was only joking.

Once the game settles down for him more, I'd expect to see him around the ball more often and get more chances to snag that ball.

But he first needs to develop his entire game before we start talking about how many interceptions this guy has, let alone how many starts he'll make this year. His 1 pick came against Rex Grossman...

But I would wonder if that's more of an issue of playing tentative or not really knowing where to be, rather than lacking footspeed. It's kind of like how a WR that runs 4.5, 4.6 can get behind a CB that runs 4.4, 4.3; an experienced WR knows where he's going and can go full throttle to get there, the CB has to transition and react correctly, keeping in mind that maybe the WR is trying to get him to overcommit and out of position before a break in his route.

For DBs - both corners and safeties - often it's less about how fast they can run, and more about knowing how to read tendencies and play the angles correctly. Mess up on either of those while you're running full out, and you can get yourself out of position in the blink of an eye. If I remember correctly, Raymond ran in the low 4.5s... so I wouldn't be surprised if what you saw as "slow" was him reacting relatively late, and not wanting to overpursue.
