I think Ta'amu being the guy with Chapman on the board might be a statement about his knee problem. That's what I rolled with last year when we left a guy who I thought was a perfect fit for the Steelers, Ras-I Dowling. Injury issues. Lo' and behold, 1st game in the NFL, bonk....

4th round. Great place for us to grab Ta'amu. I would've been fine if we had taken him in the 3rd, but no worries.

I was big on Dowling too, but Heyward was my guy for 2 years. I personally think he will be great in 2-3 years. He looked good in very limited opportunities this year. Give him a full season with OTAs...I expect big things of Cam this year.

And agreed about Ta'amu as well. Hated the idea of drafting him in the first early in the offseason, was ho hum about grabbing him in the 2nd....was excited about the chance to possibly grab him in the 3rd...and getting him in the 4th was just awesome.

Ta'amu has serious potnetial...always has. My question has always been his fit on this defense, but with the addition of Spence and Ta'amu as well as some other pieces we have...Im starting to think the Steelers defense as we know it is about to start changing.

I could be wrong, but the players we are grabbing now are different than players we have grabbed in years past. Seems like we are gearing more towards a defense aimed at shutting down the pass than shutting down the run.

43 I don't think we are switching up at all. IMO Ta'amu has the potential to be the best 2 gapper of all the NT options. I know he was very inconsistent and was not always the best college player. But don't forget he was not asked to 2 gap in college and that is what he is built to do. If we put Snack in a system where he is 1 gapping I dont think he will look that impressive because it's not his skill set. Coach Mitch said in his press conference that they are going to start from scratch and teach him how to 2 gap. If coached up on how to use leverage and how to use his hands, this guy could be a serious clogger for the next 10 years. I have high hopes for this guy.

Thompsonwould not fit in our scheme as a 5-T. Technically, he wouldn't fit our scheme at all, he is better suited as a 1- gap NT or in a 4-3. But I like Thompson enough as a player that I think he could handle the 0-T. Watching his film led me to believe he is more of a penetrator, but I didn't get the feeling that he struggled with double teams. It's just that's not what he was asked to do at Clemson. So probably a better fit for the 1- gap, but could handle the 0-T. That's the felling I got with him, and I think the steelers felt the same way.

So I heard on the radiO this morning that the Steelers had 5 player that they thought could play NT for them. They said Ta'amu was the last one standing and that's why they traded up to get him. Besides Poe who do you think the other 3 were. Obviously Chapman wasn't one of them as we'd thought.

I am not sure, but Poe is not a NT and especially the Steelers 3-4 NT 2 gap space eater. If Poe was there at 24 as well as DeCastro would that have taken Poe? That is scary to even think about, as Poe will be a bust at NT.

Interesting thing about Ta'amu is that he could play DE and be like Aaron Smith as well IMO. Maybe next year a pure NT will fall (K. Short) and allow for a nice rotation on the DL and possibly replace Hampton if he retires.

I think they will try Ta'amu at NT and if it doesn't go as planned then a NT will be had next year and AT will move to DE and perhaps will get his number as well Shocked

I was hoping they would have gotten Fangupo, but they must not have liked something. Did they even try to sign Fangupo as a URFA?

Absolutely concur.

Was actually thinking about the evolution of the 34 fire zone scheme just recently.

At it's basis it was designed to shut down the run and take away the deep passing game. Force teams into a short/intermediate passing game and wait for mistakes to happen or the pass rush to get home.

With teams having evolved to specialize in the short passing game ala NE and NO, I think we are starting to see a couple of responses. 1) DL that can in theory create pressure when isolated 1:1 2) LB's that are more designed to run and chase than plug and fill.

There is always a cyclic nature to these things and I agree we are starting to see the defensive adjustments.

You could be right, but I see evidence to the contrary.

Im not saying every little aspect of our defense is going to change, but in years past this defense has keyed in on shutting down the ground game. Obviously, that will still be a goal, but I dont think it will be priority number 1 anymore. This league is becoming and more pass oriented on offense....its only natural that defenses evolve to stop it....meaning more athletic LBs that can drop into coverage and dynamic pass rushers in the front 7.

I think kethaab or treat or someone said it before....they may have wanted a guy like Ta'amu over Chapman because he offers more of a pass rushing presence and is more scheme versatile. Again...thats just speculation, but I still personally believe our defense is changing....because in all honesty, it has to change. As good as our defense has been under LeBeau, I just think offenses are really starting to find ways to exploit it more than they were able to in the past.
