Here is another interesting article about Heckert's 2011 draft. In 2012, a few people were left scratching their heads with the Hughes pick and some other ones, so I thought this might help settle down the masses. Good stuff, we should expect good things out of 2012s class, I cant wait. Thoughts?

Phil Taylor, 1st round, 22nd overall

Jabaal Sheard, 2nd round, 37th overall

| I remember in the post draft presser last year, and Heckert was like a little kid. He kept repeating how excited he was about the way the draft went and couldn't believe some of the players were still there for their picks. Even said he considered Sheard in the first. |

That draft was certainly a good one for you guys, and you got some great players but that write up is very flattering.
Taylor is a future All-Pro = great pick.
Sheard did not out-perform all of the DE's drafted ahead of him, but was certainly a very good pick.
Greg Little, 2nd round 59th overall

He wasn't even close to Julio or A.J on the eye test. Was force fed the ball and got better as the year went on.

A nice way of saying he did nothing whilst invoking the names of two top TEs for seemingly no reason.

Whilst that is techncially true, Skrine didn't start a game last year. Huge If.
Pinkston and Hagg are good value picks.
Again good draft, but the evaluation is very rose tinted.

After the season Kiper put together a top 20 rookies list, Sheard was 8 and Little 20. Heckert knows a thing or 2 about finding players.

It's pretty easy to put a negative spin on any team's draft unless they are all widely considered all pros... They all have question marks. Big deal. Our 2011 draft was great.
Late round starters/contributors is rare anywhere.
Sheard nearly had double digit sacks and 5 FF.
Eye test? Really? Little had over 50 catches. Not saying he's Green or Jones but they didn't blow him out of the water... But he did blow a few people up blocking which was sweet.

Honestly I loved the 2011 picks. Our improved D shows it was a good draft. I was pissed a little with the Weeden pick but like Shumur I'm going to give the dude 6 games before I start and the whole season before I damn. You heard it here first! Feel free to quote me if I start too early.

He was like 3rd among all rookies in sacks iirc.
Do you consider Von Miller and Aldon Smith to be DEs?

To be completely fair, he was like this after the 2010 draft too, which was far from a good draft.
He was so worked up talking about Clifton Geathers that I thought he was gonna start spanking his monkey any second the way he was raving about him.

Was Jabaal the best pass rusher of his draft class? NO
Was Jaball the best complete DE of his class? Probably
Like Candy said, Smith and Miller are monsters, but were used mainly as pass rushers. Jaball was on the field every down and I thought he was a beast against the run.
I'm looking forward to having him here for a LONG TIME.

People here arguing whether Sheard is the best DE in the class are missing the point of this statement. Were any DE's drafted behind him markedly better? What about the ones geniuses like Kiper, McShay etc. had ranked higher than him still on the board when we took him? That's the relavent point here.
