perhaps we should discuss the real thing here which is--how is this gonna effect the ravens this year...
offense?---will they need to score a bit to cover for the loss of DPOY?..I say yes....about 1 TD more per game in fact just to be as good as last year as a 12 win team...
defense?--whew?...just cannot say--we got bodies....you had def player of year...every other team has bodies too...pass rush also you have to say--this is the dominant guy they have for sacks, and the only really good one outside they have...this will probably mean--opposite teams can focus more on haloti ngata, which IMO is probably the best interior lineman in the NFl right now...but without the outside pressure from suggs--how will that impact ngata this year?...and without speeding up opposing teams plays, what does that mean to a secondary that will be forced to cover longer, and had a player often targeted by opposing teams even when they DID have a pass rush on?..effects to jimmy smith?????
it is a huge blow to lose a DPOY...they say he may play later on...but--really if you consider the myriad of ripple effects that come from losing a premium pass rusher, or not having much of a pass rush..
well....best cha nce the ravens have is--look closely at the pats defense...that is what a defense looks like when it had no pass rush really...
and look at the pats offense..that si what your offens eill have to do to make up for the lack of pass rush..score....alot...colts did it for years..and you saw what it looked like without manning when the defense was on the field all the time...
dunno..perhaps somebody will do enough of a job to roll...maybe flacco steps up...truthfully both have to happen if they wish to be at least as good as they was last year--forget being even better, which is the goal...
suggs, was a huge loss..and because of what he does, and what pass rush means (ask giants dline and tom, brady) this has many ripple effects mostly due to one thing...
with pass rush and suggs, ravens had all their eggs, in one basket..same for cowboys and demarcus ware.....when you have one guy who is so much better than niot just his teammates, but better than most in the league, and you lose him--it is foolish to believe that your team will NOT struggle...
I just see many variabl;es needed to hold ground, and it includes offense as well as defense, just to be as good, not even to be better...

The Ravens had no pass rush in 2009 or 2010 and we didn't suddenly turn into one of the worst defenses in the league. Instead, we were still top 3 in scoring defense both years. _________________

The Pats defense had a lot more problems than just no pass rush -- they had no secondary on top of that. The Ravens will still generate some pass rush thanks to Upshaw being an upgrade in that department over JJ and McPhee being an upgrade over Redding in that department as well. In addition, we have Webb who emerged as a top 10 CB last year (and no, it wasn't out of nowhere if you watched his rookie campaign before getting injured), and our 1st round CB ready to start as well (who also came on strong as the year ended).
So, losing Suggs will hurt. No doubt. But like GTR said above, in 2009/2010 (specifically 2010 where we set a franchise record low in sacks), we were still a top 3 defense and that was with a worse secondary. We have a better pass rush than we did then and a better secondary as well. We're still a top 5 defense without Suggs, it's jsut that with him we're a top 2 defense. _________________

I think the reality of a torn achilles is starting to set in. This is a brutal injury to come back from even if it's partial, because his pass rushing skills depend entirely on that explosiveness coming from pushing off on the achilles. Honestly, probably the worst injury he could have as a pass rusher. I have no doubt he'll try to give it a go sometime this year, but I don't know if he's going to be near what he was last year. Too early to call though. _________________

At his age he shouldn't be pressing to get back too soon. A lingering type injury will compromise the remainder of his career. _________________

obvious damage control.
No problem with these guys playing sports like basketball..... these guys can't live in a bubble. |
No problem however these players also have to accept the consequences even if it means no paycheck if they do decide to play bb etc. |
Agreed... if it states that in their contract. |
Regarding the whole question of whether his contract says he can't play basketball... These contract terms are generally CYA provisions. If the player is injured playing some sport other than football and can no longer play, then the team can recoup money from said player. If nothing happens or if the player is hurt for a short period of time, teams aren't going to enforce said provisions. Teams know that players play other sports, but they aren't going to get in trouble if the team sees them playing basketball one day. _________________

I won't be sorry when the Ravens finish 8-8. |
