The NFL rookie draft website I follow the most had Jason Pinkston rated #37 overal in this years draft class. We got him in the 5th round & there is some good stuff out there about him.

2009 Second Team All-American (SI, Rivals.com)
2009 First Team All-Big East (coaches)
2010 First Team All-Big East (coaches)

He had good talent to practice against

(Brandon Lindsey, Greg Romeus, Jabaal Sheard)

41 Starts

If Pinkston was a top 2nd round talent & we get him coached up for the right side he could turn into a real find. Considering how many seasons we have gone with out addressing the right side. Would love to see him and Shaun Lauvao lock it down. That is with solid play hopefully.

Everything indicates that he could be a real find, but unless there is some logical explanation for why he wasn't taken earlier -- like every other team has no need for a solid right side of their OL --, given Pashos' injury history and Lauvao (sp?) as a big question mark, I don't feel comfortable going into a season with what we've got.

I think he was taken to be primarily a guard. I think he and Lauvao are the future of the Browns interior OLine flanking Mack in the middle. Steinbach is getting older, not sure how many more years we will keep him, he has 3 years left, and is making big money. If both of the young guys do well, and Steinbach struggles at all in the limited training camp, it wouldn't shock me at all to see the Browns let him go. From what I have read, his roster spot is a bit shakey already.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that he is projected as a G at pro level at least at first till he gets a bit better.

I think his roll this year will be to back up guard and tackle.

Very good stats I found

Quote:
This stat surprised me ... left guard Jason Pinkston: Allowed one sack in 16 starts as a rookie last season. That isn't bad for a fifth-round pick! Was he decent or was he pushed around a bit and just got lucky that the Browns had mobile quarterbacks? What can we expect from him next year?

In the future, if you find something like that and want to post about it, lets make a new thread rather than digging one up from a year ago.

I really like Ryan Miller a ton. Not just getting excited about him but total man crush. The dude is huge & plays low very well. Super strong as well 32 reps & the mean streak. He is a true Football player. Considering how hurt my feelings were when we passed on David Decastro & reached for Weeden a little early.

I started doing some math & there has to be a reason why DD fell. At the end of his 4 year contract he is going to require a big mammoth 7y $50m contract. We may end up with a guy like Miller who I believe ends up a fringe PB level high quality starter who is going to sign a super cheap rookie deal. On top of that when it is up the guy may get $4-5m a year depending. The total savings is ginormous.

Mitchell Schwartz same thing. Massie & Adams both fell for some reason.

I can not wait to see Trent & Weeden out there with the new line.

My guess is tho there is still a small chance Colt starts week 1 & gets the same do or die deal Drew Brees has when they selected Rivers.

Barring some meltdown in camp, Weeden will be the starter IMO. The question of whether or not Colt will start is non-exsistat; it's whether or not he'll be on the roster at all.

Pinkston played well for a 5th round rookie I think, especially given that he had to learn a new position to boot. He improved as the year went on, I think he'll do fine.

Lauvao is another story - the guy was just bad, period. Couldn't run block with any consistency, and his pass blocking was just awful - he got demolished in the 2nd Pittsburgh game and he has no business starting. My hope here is that Miller pushes hard for the spot, although the prospect of having two rookies on the right side seems a bit scary.

As for Steinbeck, isn't he gone? I wish the FO would re-sign him, albeit at a more reasonable rate.

With some lanes created for TR and a little time for Weeden to set & fire, I think the offense will be greatly improved.

Man, you guys are busting his chops over something pretty insignificant. So he found an old thread devoted exclusively to Pinkston and "recycled" it. I think this one small step might have done a great deal to save the limited resources of the forum.

For that effort alone, I applaud Boca for his efforts to protect the fragile forum environment. Applause Wink
