Mike Sando on our QB situation so far

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/66881/710espn-seattle-audio-clayton-show-3

Quote:
Clayton asked about the Seahawks' quarterback situation. The answer I gave was lacking in nutritional value. It's simply too early to pass judgment. Newcomers Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson have never played a game for the team. They have never even participated in a padded practice with the team. We have no idea how they'll fare. Wilson impressed initially relative to reasonable rookie expectations. Flynn has done fine without wowing. Tarvaris Jackson represents the known and an insurance policy at this point.

I just can't see Tarvaris staying on this roster for over 4 million dollars.

I'm sure they'll ask him to re-structure. I still say he's a more valuable NFL Back-up than Wilson purely based on experience. Wilson has the potential but in Flynn gets injured - I'd rather have TJax start than a third round rookie. That being said - 4mil isn't cheap.

I'm sure Pete will figure it out. Don't read this as me hating Wilson. Just not many playoff teams go into the season with only one backup QB who is a third round rookie. We want to be a playoff team right?

The Texans backups were an NFL nomad and a 6th round pick last year and they reached the playoffs. Most teams won't really have the expectation of making the playoffs if they have to rely on their backup QB as is. I'd rather have a guy like Wilson could can safely manage a game as a backup than someone like Tarvaris who can just as quickly throw away a game.

But we really dont know just how "safely" Wilson can manage a game in the NFL. For all we know, he could be worse than T-Jack

That being said, I am a huge Wilson supporter and believe he could easily become elite, but I am just trying to spark conversation. Very Happy

You're right, we don't. But based off his college tape, Wilson is a guy that makes smart decisions and takes care of the football. Obviously that's not a great indicator of NFL success, but it's all I got.

What we do know, however, is how safe Tarvaris isn't. Obviously it depends how Wilson looks in preseason games, but if he's solid I see no reason to keep Tarvaris on the roster when we have too many quality players lobbying to be on the final 53 to keep 3 QBs.

Yep. I'll be really disappointed if we lose a guy like Thomas Clayton this offseason (not actually Clayton, you know what I mean) because we had to keep Tarvaris on the roster.

I bet we know by preseason game 2 whether Tarvaris is on this team or not. I'll be equally disappointed if the front office disrespects Tarvaris by keeping him until the final cuts only to hinder his chances of making another team.

Another thing we know is that Wilson has been known to step up in big games and come from behind. We also know that TJax has been known to fold when his team needs a last minute drive.

From that alone I prefer Wilson...

That's misleading. Their backup QB was Matt Leinart. A former 11th overall pick in the NFL draft with extensive starting experience who had already been with the team an entire year learning the offense. Also I wouldn't consider him a "nomad" - the Texans were only his 2nd team. He's now moved on to the Raiders - his third team in 7 years. Their 3rd string QB was a 6th round rookie who the team hoped would never start a playoff game.

I don't care how you feel about TJax, is he re-structures, he's a better back-up right now. Wilson has zero experience and he's only "looked good" in shorts. TJax was still had a 60% completion rate last year. You and I both know he struggled. Some days it was embarrasing watching him scramble frantically around the pocket. But with another year with the team and in the system - He's got an edge over Wilson in a lot of different ways. Wilson may be a viable option next year but, if it were me, I'd say it makes sense to keep Jackson as the #2 this year. Only the Broncos (Osweiler) and Washington (Cousins) look poised to have a rookie QB be their sole back-up this year. It's not an enviable position. I'd think you'd want experience in the back-up position over potential and promise. That's my philosophy - feel free to disagree.

I would love to have experience in my backup QB. Someone like Billy Volek would be ideal.

But more than that, I want a QB that I can trust to come in for a quarter or two at a time simply make safe throws and not lose the game. You don't ask your backup to win the game, you ask him to not lose the game, and I really don't think Tarvaris has that ability. He's a mistake waiting to happen.

Experience in a QB is preferred, but that being said I would take Wilson over T-Jax at this point. As SOS stated “He's a mistake waiting to happen.” negates any reason to keep him around as a back up IMO. Granted cutting TJ makes me nervous knowing our two qb's are Flynn with next to nothing for starts and Wilson a rookie.

TJ is going to have to win a spot on the roster and I am just not so sure that is going to happen. Confused

I only remember tarvaris jackson MAKING play twice last year. The first was the touchdown run against the cards, and the second was the toss up to sidney rice after the offsides penalty for a touchdown. Besides that, i remember plays being made FOR tarvaris or him blowing games

Yea tarvaris didn't throw alot of INT's, but he forced alot of sacks by being WAY too safe the ball. Jackson literally brings nothing to the table besides slight knowledge of the offense and a cannon arm. He has way too many flaws, people really don't understand how good this defense and offensive supporting cast was last year
