Packers have agreed to terms on a four-year deal with seventh-rounder Andrew Datko, per a league source.

Man, is the league norm now? I though that it was usually a month or two before things got rolling?

there really isn't any negotiating room anymore. It's pretty cut and dried.

Been out of the loop for a while, but is a 4 year deal normal for a 7th round pick? Or...

I forget where I read it but all 2-7 rounders get four year deals and the first round picks get four year with an option for the fifth with the new rookie rules.

Oh ok. Thanks man. 4 year seems like a long commitment for a late pick, but hey, what do I know.

There is almost no guarantee and not much of a signing bonus. It's 4 years standard so that when their contract is up they are UFAs and can't be forced into bargain contracts if they outperform their draft stock.

After some way too tough goggling here is what I found

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6790759/what-new-nfl-cba-means-football-terms

Quote:
The new rookie wage scale is supposed to cut top rookie contracts by more than 50 percent. First-round picks get four-year deals in which the club holds a fifth-year option. There are slotted four-year deals from Rounds 2 through 7. Here's the discount. Cam Newton, the first pick in this year's draft, would be eligible for a four-year, $22.03 million contract. If the Panthers keep him for a fifth year, his salary would be at the average of the top 10 salaries of other quarterbacks.

The cam part kind of sums up what would happen if the Pack use their option on Perry for his fifth year, although would he be salaried as an OLB or a DE?

Huge news.
Thank goodness he's signed early and not holding out.

I have some big boy doubts here. But there is a glass half full side of me that has high hopes for this kid. Can't wait to see if this thing works out for both sides. I'll say this, if the shoulders hold up in camp, not a chance in hell he last more than about ten mins on the PS. Better keep him around if ya want him around!

There is much to this one. Can't wait to see how it all plays out. Kid has day-2 ability(maybe day-1) but if you take the bumper off a bumper car what do you have? Shocks me a bit the Packers took a shot there after Chillar(same injury) but they did have some luck with Starks shoulder. Guess ya just sit back and hope the second one holds up better than the first did for the kid. The fact Andrews gave him the green light is a HUGE plus though.

Might be a year away in terms of strength. But you just might have something there! I would much rather sit on that money than I would with a RTO like Big Breno.

Well if he is good to go, we shouldn't have a problem putting him on the team. We only kept 8 oline last year and Clifton is gone now, Wells is basically Saturday, so we got at least one spot open that noone has really stood out and grabbed yet. Of course the pack really haven't started anything yet. And usually other than last year, Mac has always kept 9 olineman.
