I've seen a lot of posts lately of people who are wanting to sign Bowe to something a bit more long-term than a one-year Franchise Tag.

The question is how much do you pay the guy, how long do you pay him?

I'm sorry, I misspoke. Why would Dwayne Bowe want to be a Kansas City Chief for his entire career? Pioli/Hunt haven't really "overpaid" anybody except for maybe Matt Cassel, I don't think they're going to break the bank on Bowe. He's a flashy guy, he likes the spotlight, he likes people around him. He likes going out and being an NFL Player. There's nothing wrong with that, its actually very respectable that he's not shy about enjoying the lifestyle that being a professional football player brings.

My question to you guys, if you were Bowe, would YOU stay in KC?

The QB situation isn't very pretty, the team seems to be predicated around running the ball and then passing to keep the defense honest. There are about 20-25 teams out there that would LOVE a D-Bowe. And I fully believe that he's a guy who wants to go out on the open market and have a choice in where he plays. I do not mean to deride Kansas City in any way. This is my home-town and I love it here. I've chosen it over a few places such as San Diego, Chicago and New York/New Jersey area. But for a rich young guy, there are more desirable locations to play in.

Convince me, KC. Put together an overwhelming case why Bowe should want to be here for the duration of his career.

Well, obviously I have no window into the man's soul, but I'd imagine he's got friends on this team. Hopefully guys like JC, DJ, Tamba, and Flowers who are all elite players and decided to stay in KC, as they would be able to sell him on it way more then anyone else.

If Bowe is a true competitor, and if he really wants to win, he's got to see that KC is doing something special here. We've got our problems from both a roster standpoint, albeit narrowed down significantly now, and from a metropolitan standpoint. Bowe is originally from Miami, so maybe he's looking for the big time spotlight, which if you had asked me 3 years ago, I totaly would have agreed. But since then he's been hanging around with guys like Fitz and Cris Carter, who are more of the top competitor type concerned with winning as much as or more then money, and definitely more then big cities. He also supposedly looked up to Andre Johnson in high school and he's far from a diva WR.

From an X's and O's standpoint, I don't think it's hard to see that KC is certainly headed in the right direction competition wise. The QB position is the only looming question mark, and Bowe probably has a decent idea of how committed they are to winning in regards to the QB position. Hopefully he comes in to camp and gets to play with Stanzi and maybe he sees the future there?

Hopefully he's getting some good advice from someone that points to other high priced UFA's that never got to see all of their big deals with new teams. History suggests that taking a little less with your incumbent team usually ends up resulting in a more successful career, and one that actually lets you see all of that deal.

So to sum it up, I think there's lots of reasons for Bowe to stay, but if he wants to go back to being the Show, and is way more concerned about dollar signs then championships, then I highly doubt he'd going to end up here long term. Has he really matured, and is he going to be steered in a sound direction? IMO, his best chance for long term success and continued big pay days that he actually sees is if he stays right here.

A lot of WR made some bigtime money this offseason. He wants to get paid period.

When he gets a fair contract offer he likes he will take it plain and simple.

That is a huge looming question mark, though. Bowe had a historically impressive streak in 2010, how much better would that have been with a good-to-great QB?

The market limits him, the QB limits him. One is always going to remain a constant.

I think at some point, it becomes about winning football games. Our team is built to do so outside of QB. I think if one of our current QBs doesn't show enough this year, we'll be talking about trading up to get a top teir guy. I would hope that Pioli is transparent about this with Bowe, though obviously we could have reasons to doubt that. I think Bowe would see we are committed to keeping the main parts of our team together, and see that he is an important part.

What I don't hope from the Chiefs side is we are content with a 1 year wait and see what happens with Baldwin (who everyone knows how if feel about)...and we could lose Bowe for nothing next year when he have to franchise Albert. Because make no mistake about it, we need to keep BA, especially if we're trading picks to get a QBOTF...

I'm not sure I totally agree that the market limits him. I could see him wanting a bigger spotlight, but the market isn't going to limit him. Lots of WR's over the past decade have had great careers and got paid very well in smaller markets, like Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith, Hines Ward, Derrick Mason, Calvin Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Jimmy Smith, etc. All had contracts given to them that at the time where near the tops for their position, while in a smaller market. Bowe just needs to be OK with living in KC about half the year.

As for the QB, it's definitely an issue. If I'm Pioli I'd just tell him one simple thing in regards to that position, "I will not let that position hold us back from greatness." Let Bowe read between the lines. Hopefully the off-season talk of going after Peyton lends creedance to that.

Let's just hope that Bowe isn't hoping for Calvin money. Because as much as I love D-Bowe, Megatron is there every game, always shows up. Bowe is hit or miss. Plus Megatron's deal is just rediculous.

It's also ridiculous. Wink

Yeah, I love Bowe and would have zero issue with a long term deal averaging $9+ million per year. I think I had previously thrown out the idea of a 7 year $65MM deal with about $38MM of that guaranteed ($20MM in a signing bonus and the first two season's salary). However, anything over $10MM per year is too much. He could probably get something like that over a 4-5 yr deal, but more total money should be on the table from us. Basically, Bowe could get a V-Jax kind of $56MM deal for 5 years, but we would give him more total money over a little longer period of time. He's much more likely to see all of my proposed deal then a V-Jax kind of deal.

If I'm Pioli I would try to lock Albert up ASAP. The earlier in the season the better. Sometime around October extend him long term. Then if Bowe keeps demanding ridiculous amounts of money, I would just franchise him again.
Keep him on contract years where he is hungry and motivated.

Yeah with our OL upgraded I can see Albert having a great year and only getting more expensive and possibly impossible to resign if we wait too long.
