While enjoying seminoles1 and l3lind golfer's Top 25 Franchise Players thread, I felt some difference in opinions so I wanted to make my own positional rankings and then possibly a top 30 players in the NBA right now.
So I'll start with point guards and work my way down. I'll be judging based on three critera.
Talent - Are they a legitimate superstar or are they just a role player. This is the biggest factor in these rankings.
Age - Are they on the brink of falling off the face of the earth? Or are they about to burst into their prime with great play for several years to come.
Contract - Everyone loves a guy whose making peanuts for the production he's having.
Predictions? _________________

I'll predict Stephen Curry won't make it into the top 10. _________________

Based on your criteria, Kyrie Irving is a lock for the top 10 _________________

10.) Steve Nash [PG; Phoenix Suns]
2011-12 Stats: 62 GP (62 GS), 12.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 10.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 3.7 TOPG, .532/.390/.912, .532 eFG%, .625 TS%, .144 WS/48, 20.3 PER
Contract: Free Agent
I really had a tough time with this spot as I could have honestly gone in a couple of different directions. There were two others I had in serious consideration for this spot, and this was probably the toughest spot to rank. He's not the player he once was before, but he'll go down as one of the better point guards to play the game. He was originally drafted by the Pheonix Suns, but after two disappointing years he was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks where Donnie Nelson, Don Nelson's son, that he was being underutilized. It was only at that point that Steve Nash blossomed into the player he would become playing alongside Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki. The play with Steve Nash was a big reason why there was excitement back with the Mavericks. After the 2003-04 season, Steve Nash was set to be a free agent and he wanted to return to Dallas but Mark Cuban was unwilling to commit long term to a thirty year old Steve Nash. So he signed with Phoenix and he became an even better player winning the NBA MVP in back-to-back seasons, 2005 and 2006. Playing under Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo system along with playing alongside Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, and Amare Stoudemire saw the Suns have a 33 game turnaround that culminated with him winning his first of two MVP awards. Steve Nash is already 38 years old, and probably doesn't have much more left in the tank more a year or two but he's still a highly productive point guard and almost has to be on the list because of his accomplishments.
9.) John Wall [PG; Washington Wizards]
2011-12 Stats: 66 GP (66 GS), 16.3 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 8.0 APG, 1.4 SPG, 3.9 TOPG, .423/.071/.789, .424 eFG%, .502 TS%, .071 WS/48, 17.7 PER
Contract: Two Years, $13,375,805
The former #1 overall pick of the Washington Wizards had a decent rookie season, but failed to quiet the people that thought he wasn't going to be the franchise player that the Wizards think he is. His sophomore year had him regress a bit, especially as a shooter where he didn't make the strides that people wanted to see him make. He reminds me of Rajon Rondo prior to the breakout in that he's not a very good shooter and production comes largely off of his ability to get into the paint and create open looks for others. He's not the defender that Rondo is, but he's got the physical tools to be a pretty good defender but he'll need to commit himself there to be a good defender. He'll only be 22 by the time the next season rolls around, so there is still plenty of time for him to develop as a player particularly as a shooter. He's got a chance to be one of the better point guards in the NBA in a few years, but ultimately as hard as he works will dictate how good he is. _________________

Looks good so far. Going forward there's 7-8 PG's i'd take over Nash.
I'm guessing...
8. Lawson
7. Irving
6. Rose (injury hurts his stock)
5. Parker
4. Rondo
3. Westbrook
2. Williams

8.) Steph Curry[PG; Golden State Warriors]
2011-12 Stats: 26 GP (23 GS), 14.7 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.5 SPG, 2.5 TOPG, .490/.455/.809, .583 eFG%, .605 TS%, .144 WS/48, 21.2 PER
Contract: One Year, $3,958,742
Probably the most controversial ranking I'll post, I really like what Steph Curry brings to the table. He was a bit of a controversial pick as he came out of the small school of Davidson known more as a pure scorer than an actual point guard. The Warriors decided to move long time guard Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut in order to put Steph Curry as the primary ball handler. Unfortunately, he dealt with a recoccuring ankle injury this season and as a result his numbers were down across the board. Expect to see him have ankle surgery this offseason, and I fully expect him to take off next year as the primary ball handler. He's not quite the passer that some of the others are on the list, but he's not a big turnover machine either. He'll light up the scoreboard as well as get his teammates involved.
7.) Tony Parker [PG; San Antonio Spurs]
2011-12 Stats: 60 GP (60 GS), 18.3 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.0 SPG, 2.6 TOPG, .480/.230/.799, .488 eFG%, .539 TS%, .177 WS/48, 22.0 PER
Contract: 3 Years, $37,500,000
You could make an argument that Tony Parker could be ranked as high as fourth on this list, and I wouldn't argue against it. Tony Parker is quickly becoming the Spurs go-to player as Tim Duncan continues to age. He thrives in the open court, but he's also quite effective in the pick and roll with Tim Duncan which opens up the majority of the Spurs offense. He's like an extension of Gregg Popovich on the floor with his heady play, and getting his teammates involved in the action. While he doesn't get the respect that the other big time point guards do, he can play with the best of them. He's not a great shooters, so when teams can successfully defend the pick and roll the Spurs offense can get a bit sluggish and then requires either Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili to beat their defenders off the dribble. _________________

Unless he's sitting there at 6, I'm guessing he got left off. I'd take him over Curry and Parker moving forward. |

As much as I want to believe in Ty Lawson, he's just too much of a product of the system IMO. On the first glance, the numbers appear across the board to be much better than in his sophomore year, but when you compare the per 36 minutes stats there really wasn't much improvement. Defensively, he's limited because of his diminutive size and he'll never be considered a great defender. I just see too many limitations to put him in my top ten. I've got him around 12 right now. _________________

I think it's amazing the Cavs have a top 6 PG right now and if he improves he could easily make the jump into top 3 quite quickly.
I could actually see him being ranked in the top 4 of this as some of the people that could be ranked higher than him could be ranked lower due to age, injury, and the fact they are playing at or near max contracts while Irving is on a rookie contract. _________________
