They sure can...

Yeah, they do it all the time. Laughing

If a team has the right to cut a player when they haven't performed to the contract, why shouldnt a player have the right to ask for a new contract if they are severely underpaid?

Because that's in the contract. The only thing that the NFL team has to pay is the guaranteed money. They can choose to continue to contract at the cost of the extra money if they so choose, but it isn't an obligation. If it was an obligation, it would be all guaranteed.

And the player absolutely should be allowed the right to ask for a new contract, and they are. It doesn't mean that they have the right to automatically receive that new contract, however.

That wasn't really what I meant, I know they can cut players, I just mean like keeping the player but cutting down the contract. You played like crap after getting this huge contract, we are going to pay you $5 million instead of $10 million. The players signed the contract to play for so many years for so much money.. Not 2 years in decide that you are better than the contract you already agreed to.

Players restructure deals to the benefit of the team all the time. Teams have the right to ask the players to reduce their salary, just as the players have the right to ask for an increase in salary. In neither negotiation is the other side obligated to agree to the change.

MJD Won't report and Khan has said there will be no new deal.

Interesting to say the least.

This isn't a good development for the Jags in the least. MJD is their offense, and the guy who was to play Robin to his Batman act - WR Justin Blackmon - is current neck deep in his issues, and he's not a lock to play 16 games due to it.

All of it taken together tells me that Blaine Gabbert is in for a heaping helping of trouble when the season starts. MJD is a gamer and not one to miss out on games, so he will be there come W1, but he'll be coming in with a new offense to learn, as well as zero prep time. Even the best players need SOME sort of build up to the season, and MJD doesn't look like he's gonna get that. As the main crutch to Gabbert last season, a continued delay of getting him on the field doesn't yield itself to Gabbert getting the help he will need to build on last years' season.

Ya this looks ugly. The new owner comes in and appear to alienate their best player? Strange way to start things off there.

This is one of the reasons that many rank the Jags last. It's not that they don't have talent, it's that their star player is holding out, their first round WR will have a tough time getting their due to offseason problems and their QB has a LONG way to go to be respectable in this league.

Those are 3 big positions at question marks.

I realize my Browns also have 3 new guys at those positions, but the lack of drama, imo, is why some rank us higher.

Jags better hope MJD is in the backfield Week 1 bc without him, they'll be lucky to win 2 games.

MJD has signed his contract in 2009 and he remains two years on his contract

And I agree with the Jaguars do not discuss of contract with MJD...Even with MJD, the jaguars are not a good team

True, but you have to consider the continued progression of Blaine Gabbert when looking at this. Blaine Gabbert was not good last year, period. This year is crucial in him working towards getting better, and losing your #1 offensive playmaker would kill any type of progression he would be slated to make this year.

The Jags might not be good with or without MJD...but Gabbert is destined to tank hard if he doesn't have a safety valve to keep defenses on their toes and off of his back. That alone should get the Jags to reconsider.

with or without MJD, Blaine Gabbert can not do worse than last year....If this is the case, Blaine Gabbert will be out of the NFL very soon

A QB can not have the success in the nfl(and even in the CFL), if he is scared

For all the whining we hear about players wanting long term deals, it sure seems like quite a few of them don't ever want to play them out. If these guys loathe the back end of their deals so much, why aren't they signing two year deals?
