I was reading Graziano's blog and he was talking about Cooley's chance to make the team and Im sad to say its not looking good! This is tough for me because Im a huge Cooley fan. He was one guy I could cheer for during the years of mediocrity!
Graziano maid the point that Cooley is now 30 and the injuries that have plagued him for the past couple of years probably wont be getting better. Shann has really high praise for Paul, and it looks like he will be taking most of Cooley's playing time. I have read that Cooley is really much slower than he has been in the past, amd he is scheduled to make 3.8 mil this year. All things bad for Cooley |

I think it remains to be seen. He tweaked his hamstring this week, so that's just something else he has to get past. To me though, 30 isn't old, especially not for a TE. He brings experience and versatility to the position because he's played hb/FB as well. I really don't think it makes sense to let someone like him go, unless he truly can't play, which I doubt is the case. I've been reading about how good he's looked in practices compared to years past. He's in shape, ans has no trouble with the knee.
To me if they are worried about $$, ask him to take a pay cut. He has said in the media he would do that to stay in dc and I'm sure a few other older vets would do the same of asked to. Experience matters in the nfl and frankly this team doesn't have too many experienced quality veterans who are or once were pro bowlers. I think guys like Cooley, Moss and Jamaal Brown are needed on this offense (if healthy) and from all reports, they are healthier than they've been the last 3 seasons and in better shape. They've all made the commitment this offseason to get in better shape for the team and to get healthy. I'd be extremely dissapointed to see these vets let go who are our only leaders on the offensive side of the ball. _________________

| I concur -- and yes , I could always cheer him during the down years but sadly ,,it's gonna be adieu.. They should do it soon so he can move on and maybe catch on somewhere. |

Hey Bro Im with ya!!!! I love the leadership he brings! I also agree with the fact that 30 is not that old, but Cooley's body has already started to break down way before 30! I just dont see him making it through an NFL season at 30 when he couldnt do it at 27. Who do you cut to keep Cooley, or do you keep 4 tightends? I just dont see it.
I trust Shann to make the right decision!
"Since Shanahan took over before the 2010 season, the Redskins have cut 150 players, and only one of those players -- San Francisco's Carlos Rogers -- is currently starting for another team." Dan Graziano |

As I said, Cooley has versatility as a HB/FB, he can back up Young there. Paul is extremely raw still and can also still be a big WR type. yeah he's looked good without pads on but I still think that experiment is a work in progress. I think we keep them all and put some of our late round rookies on the practice squad.
That makes more sense to me. _________________

They probably can find room but it Might come down to 3.8 million for a 3rd stringer instead of a min salary for a younger guy who will rarely see the field and could develop ...
I Really believe Niles Paul is going to win the #2 spot.....but definitely agree some(body) guys like Reiliford will be going to PS _________________

I still see Cooley as a qbs best friend a security blanket who knows how to get open in the middle of the field and it makes a qbs job easy. He knows how to shield defenders like boxing out in basketball, he just knows all the little intricacies of playing the position, even more so than Fred Davis.
If healthy I think he's #2, Paul is a developmental prospect. Paulsen should be kept around because he's the best blocker and we need blocking for the running game. He too is a reliable TE who gets open well. _________________

I still see Cooley in the role of the H back and not so much the TE spot. Meaning he will be flexible from the backfield and either blocking or getting out to the flats. Paul and Davis will mostly work from the TE spots and Young will be the FB but rotated.
If they didnt cut Cooley all ready, they aint going to cut him now. Besides, they have to see if he can play well this year and try to get some type of trade value.
But Cooley isnt going to get cut. _________________

I'm going to go with Turtle for the 2nd time today. If Cooley looks like the #3 TE then we still need to keep him. Get him to take a pay cut and keep him.
However, one way I will be willing to part with him is if a team comes up and offers us a 3rd or 4th rounder for him. _________________

Why does he need to take a pay cut? How about a little loyalty |

How about a little loyalty | We're in cap hell because the league took 18 mill from us this year and he's going to be a reserve, it only makes sense for the good of the team and he won't get paid what he's making for us anywhere else. It makes sense for both sides. _________________

Loyalty is why he'd be asked for a paycut in return for keeping him on the roster. Otherwise he could be a post June1 cut and then he would not be assured of getting the same type of money.
And turtle is right. We need to also think of the broader team. We're down $18M in cap space. Getting some back from a guy making a starter's salary but is 3rd on the depth chart and hasn't been completely healthy in years doesn't sound unreasonable to me. _________________

Pay cut or cut him. I love Cooley but the youth movement has started and he should be grateful to be here. _________________

If the guy is healthy, he's the best tight end on the team. Yes, that's over Fred Davis.
I think maybe they should wait to determine is health status. I'd rather cut Moss than Cooley. |

I love both -- If I have to pick one to keep--it's Moss |
