Detroit Lions' Cliff Avril prefers not to play under the franchise tag this season
| Quote: | Detroit Lions defensive end Cliff Avril never made it to Allen Park for any of his team's workouts this offseason, but was in California on Tuesday.
Avril was a guest on the NFL Network's Total Access show for an hour on Tuesday night. While he spoke primarily about the Lions, Avril weighed in on a variety of league-wide subjects. |
| Quote: | On where the contract negotiations stand right now with the Lions:
"We're talking. We're still trying to get things figured out before camp. I want to be there long-term, I want to get a deal done. I don't want to play under the franchise tag. I've been with the team for four, going on five years. Started off a little shaky going 0-16 and I want to be with the team when we make the Super Bowl run." |
| Quote: | On if he is set on not playing on the franchise tag in 2012 and if he would consider holding out if it came down to that:
"I would prefer not to play on the franchise tag but we have a lot of time front of us. I think the deadline is July 16 and hopefully we get something figured out before then. I haven't really thought past that point." |
The interview has some interesting quotes. I suggest giving it a quick read through. He talks on several different Lions related topics.
How do you guys see this situation playing out? Will the Lions sign him? Trade him?
When do you think the situation will be resolved? _________________

Looks to me like they are playing a game of chicken at this point. IMO neither side will win, but the Lions will come out the winners in the end because he will sign for less than his demands. At this point it looks to me it will get done last minute, but neither side is going to budge until the last couple days. _________________

I've never seen the leverage for Avrils contract talks other than asking extremely high and hoping the Lions counter with a more realistic number thats closer to the higher number than not. Typical stuff here imo. I'm sure Lions don't really wanna pay him the franchise amount either and would like to settle on a long-term deal that brings his price per year price down on the salary cap.
Heard on the radio a few weeks back a trade idea between us and Jacksonville for MJD. Doesn't seem like a good idea, one because MJD is in a contract dispute, two because MJD is getting alot of miles on his tires and Avrils young, and three because Avril wants to be here.
Sounds unlikely that Avril leaves imo. |

I could see Jax being interested, but I agree with your concerns about MJD.
I expected the Jagz to throw a ton of money at him if he hit FA. It'll be interesting to see how this situation plays out. I'd like to see Avril in camp, though. I don't want to see a long holdout process. _________________

There was an article posted a couple weeks ago that said Avril wanted 10.6per(same as tag) and the Lions were sitting on 8. I expected him to sign between 8 and 9. And I feel that is reasonable all things considered. We will see how it pans out. _________________

He'll sign his tender, he'll play here this year, he'll have a good season (another 10+ sack campaign), and the Lions will give him a long-term contract before next year's free agency period begins. I've been saying this all along. Yeah, he says he'd "prefer not" to play under the tender. I'm sure he would. I'm also sure he's not going to turn down $10.6 million. _________________

How much do you think he would sign for after this season? Do you think if he puts together another productive season that he'll ask for more money? _________________

Why wouldn't he? He's already risked alot... He'll get more money than the 10.6 million if he's tagg'd AGAIN! Something like 12.6 million. If he plays this contract out(franchise) It's almost good business to sign one again. Unless he signs between 10-12 million per year long-term.
Of coarse this is assuming he repeats or outperforms last years play. |

I wouldn't be too upset if we traded Avril for MJD but I'd want more value out of it draft pick wise or even in young players. I hope we get him signed for less than 10 per, but I do hope we keep all options open even if it means trading him. _________________ Kate Upton for sexy President!!!

I'm sure he would assuming he plays up to it like you said. But, I really don't think I want the Lions to shell out that kind of money for him. I'm a little torn on the contract situation, but I would feel better about it if he matched or came close to last season's numbers. I just wouldn't be a huge fan of paying him a lot more if he demanded it after another good season. I'm not saying he wouldn't deserve it, but I think the Lions need to be smart with their money going forward. I'd like to see the money spread out a little more. _________________

I think its fair to assume neither side will back down from their demands, I feel Avril will sign his tender, albeit maybe reluctantly but $10.6 Million is not to be sneezed at.
If he has another year then like he did last year, I expect the Lions to pay him probably closer to the $10 Million mark rather than the $8 Million last I heard the Lions are offering. _________________

I think if we don't get him under a long term deal this season then he's pretty much gone. There's a few guys that are gonna be FA's for us next season, not sure there's enough money to go around considering the cap isn't suppose to increase all that much. _________________

Well, he already seems to be asking for money the Lions aren't willing to fork over just yet. My thought on it is that if he plays under the tag and has a season similar to his 2011 season, then the Lions will feel more comfortable giving him a payday and he'll get his 5-year, $55 million contract or whatever it is he's looking for. If he has a disappointing season, then maybe they'll just let him walk or he'll be forced to reduce his contract demands. _________________

Deadline fast approaching. I know many people love Avril but I think they need to trade him for secondary help. The wide nine can let some second tier guys really succeed with Suh and Williams eating up the middle.
Time to move this guy and fix a MAJOR weakness _________________
